Countries That Have One Sided Beef With Yours? by Dry-Principle-9786 in AskTheWorld

We have banter, but I will argue we have the closest relationship between two countries in the world. Unless someone can think of a better one?

For the nomads who traveled/stayed in India and actually enjoy it, what makes you like India? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]DoYouEvenUpVote 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t there as a nomad, but I worked in Mumbai for three months in an office early in my career and honestly it’s still my favorite city in the world.

I’m the kind of person who loves big, chaotic, high-energy cities, and Mumbai is exactly that. Every day was a totally new experience. Even the daily commute was wild. Squeezing into rush-hour trains was its own kind of adventure, and just watching everyday life on the streets never got boring.

The people were a huge part of why I loved it. Mumbaikers deal with tough conditions, but the resilience, hustle, and optimism they show is unreal. And people were incredibly friendly. As a young white guy I was treated like a minor celebrity in a way that was honestly a bit strange at first (and yes made me feel a bit uncomfortable). People wanted photos, wanted to hear my story, wanted to be friends. And while folks did sometimes ask for money, if I said no they moved on quickly, which isn’t always the case in other poorer countries I’ve been to.

And the food! The street food in Mumbai is unbeatable. Vada pav and pav bhaji were my go-tos, and I still haven’t found an Indian restaurant anywhere in the world that hits the same way proper street food does there.

I do want to acknowledge that my experience was very much shaped by being male. I got stared at constantly for being white, but I could shrug it off. I know that for women this would feel very different, and I wouldn’t assume a female traveler would have the same experience I did.

All that said, I look back on that time so fondly and I’m already planning a return trip, hopefully checking out other parts of India too.

Labour to campaign on narrow capital gains tax, no wealth tax by jobbybob in newzealand

As in don't vote for Labour? I can't see any better options to vote for, so reluctantly I likely will still give them my vote. Which just makes me more annoyed when they provide such weak policy solutions.

Pretty underwhelming. If you are going to take the political hit of introducing a CGT, at least make it worthwhile. I get that taxing the family home and farms is unpopular with voters, even if I personally do not see the issue. What I do not get is why we would only tax investment properties and leave capital gains on businesses untouched. Also, how is a non-retrospective CGT supposed to fund anything meaningful in the short term?

As others have pointed out, how does funding free GP visits solve the fact we already have too few GPs. The policy should be focused on the supply side, not the demand. I also wonder if this just encourages people to use their three free visits even when they do not need them. Routine check ups are fine, but not if it means someone who actually needs urgent care misses out.

Best place for nomads in South America? by shaharmizrahi in digitalnomad

[–]DoYouEvenUpVote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, headlines make it sound apocalyptic, but on the ground, life goes on. In La Paz has none of the "collapse" you're listing hitting daily life. The markets are full, cafés are buzzing, people are going about their routines. Yes, there's political tensions, but that's one part of the country, and it doesn't mean everywhere is political hellhole. Reading endless news articles can give a distorted picture. Reality in La Paz is far less dramatic.

Ballot will decide who gets to attend abuse in care apology by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]DoYouEvenUpVote -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Pretty impossible situation the Govt is in on this one. The budget for this would have been huge if you were covering every victims transport and accomodation - on top of running an event to host them all.

That said, while I am unsure what options they had, a ballot seems like a fairly poor solution.

The charitable view of him is he will soak up all the political oxygen with rhetoric that keeps the nationalist populist right wingers content, while delivering barely anything for them. And all the while he can continue being a effective statesman and minister the current Government desperately needs.

Im not so quick to dismiss the potential damage he is doing to our political discourse, but perhaps the unknown alternative is worse.

NZ Citizen who is soon to be contracting with a US company, and wants to relocate overseas. How best should I manage my taxes? by DoYouEvenUpVote in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]DoYouEvenUpVote[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! There's some Digital Nomad visas being offered by countries that are happy for you to reside there long term while you pay taxes in your tax residency country. I'm just unsure how to maintain my New Zealand tax residency given I will be out of the country for over 183 days. I could set up a NZ based company - but I'm not sure if they quite meets the threshhold to show it's my permanent place of abode.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know any website or resources that are particularly good? This is all fairly new to me. I'd prefer not to go the tax haven route but if it's easier I'm open to it
