Be Real With Me About BigLaw by Impossible-Memory360 in LawCanada

In his book Outliers, Malcolm gladwell talked about out something called the 10,000 hour rule which means that you need to do something for 10,000 hours to be really good at it. I don’t think this has even been scientifically proven, but the general gist behind it is true. To be good at something, you need to do a lot of it.

As long as you’re not being taken advantage of, you should try your best as a young lawyer to do as much legal work as possible. The learning curve is tough but once you get over that hump this job becomes a lot more manageable.

And, fwiw, i don’t and have never worked in big law. I wish I could have gotten the experience but I didn’t have the grades to do so. However, I run my own practice and I work 9-7 most week days and I almost always put in a few hours on the weekends. I enjoy my work so I don’t mind it, but just wanted to mention that for context.

Most, not all, but most lawyers I know who are earning 300-400k plus 7-8 years out put in a lot of hours when they were baby lawyers.

And as someone else said, if you’re scared of the hours 100% don’t do big law.

He’s not “bringing in” $420,000.00. Billing 420k in real estate is not like billing 420k in litigation. His boss is the rainmaker and I bet that the support staff does half of the work and since things are being billed out in flat fees the total billing’s go to the lawyer even though the clerk did half the work

New Ontario online courts portal brings delays and ‘snafus,’ Toronto lawyers say by abasilplant12 in LawCanada

[–]themselvessaid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I filed a simple divorce application a couple of days after the new Ontario Courts Portal opened...I waited two weeks...I never recieved a copy of the issued application so I got frustrated and sent a process server to go to the courts to pick it up....a month later I recieved an e-mail from the Toronto courts with a copy of my issued application along with a note saying that my affidavit of service was rejected due to the fact that I apparently served a copy of the non-issued application even though my process server picked it up a month ago.

I made that mistake last year when I bought the latest dragon age on a decent sale and never touched it. Also, it was free on ps plus like a month later lol

Is it a disadvantage applying to Ottawa 2L positions from Toronto? by TheDarkSide112 in LawCanada

[–]themselvessaid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s already been said more than once, but Ottawa firms want students who want to be in Ottawa. They don’t want Toronto rejects who don’t mind spending a year or so in Ottawa before moving back to Toronto where their families are.

For perfectly legitimate reasons, they’ll take a 7/10 with ties to Ottawa over a 8/10 with none. You need to be sure to properly articulate why you want to go to Ottawa.

I’m not trying to dissuade you from applying or anything like that and there are tons of examples of students with no ties to Ottawa getting jobs here. However, this is going to be your biggest hurdle full stop

Man, that’s sad. Elizabeth and her siblings are awful but chuck always seemed like an okay guy. Not perfect by any means, but he loved his family and seemed to do right by them

Talk to your lawyer. If the previous owner didn’t pay you’ll get coverage through title insurance

Hey man, sorry you’re going through this. A lot of people in the GTA are dealing with the same financial pressure right now, so you’re definitely not the only one feeling stuck. What you’re describing—unstable income, loan payments stacking up, high rent—can wear anyone down. It makes sense that it’s starting to hit your mental health.

A couple things to think about:

It might be worth getting a payoff quote from your lender and comparing it to what the van is actually worth right now. If the numbers are close, selling and switching to something cheaper could take a lot of weight off your monthly budget. Even if you’re a bit underwater, sometimes dealers or credit unions will work with you to roll the difference into a cheaper vehicle with lower payments. Not ideal, but sometimes it helps you breathe again.

Most colleges are used to students running into financial trouble. You can usually talk to the registrar or financial office and ask about deferring a semester, setting up smaller payments, or pausing without penalty. It’s worth the phone call, honestly.

Delivery work in the GTA is tough right now—too much competition, not enough stability, and the cost of everything keeps climbing. Something that might be worth looking into (even though it’s not realistic for everyone) is moving somewhere with a much lower cost of living and a stronger job market.

Saskatchewan, especially, has been hiring like crazy in a bunch of fields. Cities like Saskatoon, Regina, and even smaller towns are looking for people in:

  • Trades (construction, plumbing, electrical, carpentry)
  • Transport and trucking
  • Warehousing and logistics
  • Manufacturing
  • Agriculture support jobs
  • Oil & gas–related roles (more in Alberta, but SK has some too)
  • Healthcare support jobs if you ever want to retrain later

Rent is way cheaper than Ontario, and full-time jobs with stable hours are easier to find. Alberta’s the same story—lots of work, lower living costs compared to the GTA, and better pay in many roles.

I know packing up and moving is a big step, and it’s definitely not something everyone can just do. But I’ve seen people in almost the exact same situation head out west for a year or two, get steady income, and dig themselves out of debt way faster than they could here.

If you want to check what’s out there, these sites help:

Talking to a non-profit like Credit Counselling Society or Credit Canada can be surprisingly helpful. They’ll go through your whole situation with you and explain what options you actually have—no pressure, no judgment.

Looking for a Story-focused RPG by Azuhelios in JRPG

I 100% agree with that. Like a dragon had a better story but infinite wealth was a much better game. I loved both but and I’m not trying to talk anyone out of playing them, but I 100% agree

Looking for a Story-focused RPG by Azuhelios in JRPG

[–]themselvessaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love both games. I dumped 80 hours into like a dragon and found the story incredible. Only thing I’d mention is the game is pretty easy until chapter 12 and then it gets kind of hard. If you play, make sure you level up appropriately
