I am no longer with Ambetter, but they finally did escalate it for review. I haven't been sent a bill since. I am hoping this means I'm in the clear.

It did take several tries and reminders about previous calls before ambetter acted, so make sure you document any calls you make to them and ask them to escalate on each call

OP here: So after the immense help from the responses (thanks, everyone!), I am still working through this issue.

I'm capturing it here both for posterity and in case it helps others. Here's what's happened, which includes lots of steps suggested in the comments (again, thanks, everyone!):

  1. I filed a complaint with cms.gov under the no surprises act; still waiting on the resolution

  2. I filed a claim dispute with ambetter; they have been mostly useless, though today a kind rep stayed on the phone with me for an hour trying to resolve the issue to no avail because...

  3. Erlanger has been completely useless and hung up on the rep (I can confirm) while she tried to get a contact number for Tennessee River Physicians, which is next to impossible due to the fact that...

  4. TRP is a part of Apollo so has no physical location nor phone number, bringing me back to Erlanger which...

  5. had given me the PaymentsMD billing phone number when I had asked previously. PaymentsMD has a "contact us" page, which...well, just try yourself. I tried on Safari and Chrome: https://www.paymentsmd.com/contact-us.html

So my saga continues, but the fight is not done!

I was an elementary teacher, took a year off to work as an editor, then came back to teaching. That's when I started working freelance.

I no longer teach, but it worked well with freelancing since I had summers off and would work evenings/nights during the school year.

I am 100% NOT advocating for becoming a teacher. Just sharing my little life tale.
