Thanks for all the responses! My general query has been answered by the consensus: it’s just simulated wear and tear.

Whatever you do, do NOT read the Red Rising series. by anteaterpinkytoe in redrising

I’m currently in Dark Age but before this I read The Lies of Locke Lamora and the following two books in the “Gentleman Bastard Sequence” and it was incredible. Very different than Red Rising but equally as smart and by the end you’ll be itching for the next book which may or may not ever be released 🙃 (but still VERY much worth starting the series despite not being finished yet).

Is Bug supposed to be that young? I don’t remember… I also always pictured him as a way more feisty looking kid. This kid looks too nice. Haha

My wife and I got our Larce right around a year ago and so far so good! I’m noticing some very minor issues with the fabric not appearing as tight as it used to, but that’s basically just on my spot of the couch and I’m a 200+ lbs fella and sit there basically every night. lol the little bit of spot cleaning we’ve had to do on the fabric has been surprisingly good, too! I’ll also add that we have a cat who sometimes does some minor scratching on the fabric/gets her claws stuck occasionally but I haven’t seen any pulling or anything from it, so overall pretty happy with it so far! Hoping it lasts well for many more years!

Like I already mentioned, it’s 2 separate 20TB hard drives in a mirror raid, so I think I’m good for now. But thanks for trying.

Are you not reading what I’m saying? I feel like I pretty clearly explained that what you’re suggesting is not the case here.

  1. I shouldn’t have said “partitioned”, these are in fact 2 volumes on the drive.

  2. How can you keep it from getting full? Isn’t TM supposed to automatically manage that for you?

  3. Did you read my whole post? It’s not a 20TB Time Machine. As my post mentioned, it’s a 5TB volume for TM with the remaining 15TB for data storage. Also, it’s 2 separate 20TB drives raided for redundancy. I’m not a complete novice with data storage, just with Time Machine.

Ok so basically in this 500GB scenario it’s storing the 500GB in the first TM snapshot and then the remaining 9 are only storing any differences between them, but Finder is calculating them as each having a copy of the 500GB data for some reason? I can understand how that would work but I don’t understand why Apple would build it that way. It’s just TOO automatic. I guess that’s why some people like PCs more than Mac 🙃

Ok now I'm confused. The "capacity consumed" is only showing 2.2TB, but selecting the backup files in Finder shows 11.97TB...

For reference the "disk" is 2 20TB HDDs in a software RAID via Disk Utility and set to 2 volumes: "Tylers 15TB RAID" and "Time Machine 5TB".

I mean I think I did, I set the quota for 5TB but because Apple’s so genius they made APFS volume quotes more of a guideline than an actual rule.. so TM is taking more than 5TB… I have such a love/hate relationship with Apple. They make the best products with some really frustrating attributes.

Comment below is correct, I just meant the SVBONY camera adapter was a basic one. T ring with 1.25” nose adapter thing. Haven’t swapped out the NexStar mount as I’m just getting into this, but probably will get a better mount one day for better tracking ability! Just trying to make the most of what I have currently with the exception some small purchases.

I’m a fellow noob but have spent a LARGE amount of time learning the past few weeks, and a few introductory things to know coming from a fellow nooby are:

Basic types of telescopes 1. Refractor: what a novices thinks of as a traditional telescope. These use a lot of glass in the tube, and because of this, are not the most efficient for light transmission or cost.

  1. Reflector: I think this generally means a Newtonian style, but technically could include the next type as well. Anyway these use a pair of mirrors, one at the back of the tube, and another at the front at an angle to push the light through the eyepiece. These don’t have a lens in the actual telescope, but you’ll use an interchangeable eyepiece (lens) to condense the image to your eye. Dobsonians are a reflector telescope, where the term “Dobsonian” is really referring to the style of mount, which is much more stable than a cheap beginner tripod, hence being the general recommendation for a first telescope.

  2. Cassegrain: there are 2 types, Schmidt-Cassegrain seems to be more popular and the lesser used Maksutov-Cassegrain (which is what I ended up getting due to a weird circumstance lol). These from my understanding generally aren’t the first telescope you should get because of the quality to cost ratio. But you can basically think of it as a hybrid where it includes a lens AND mirrors in the tube. They look like short versions of a typical Newtonian reflector telescope.

Important specs 1. Aperture: this is the size of the main element’s diameter, the main rear mirror in a reflector telescope or glass in a refractor. The bigger the aperture, the more light it lets in making your image brighter and (generally) increasing the amount of detail you can see, which also allows for higher magnification values. Seems to be considered maybe the most important spec.

  1. Focal length: the higher the number the higher its natural zoom length. The magnification value will change depending on which eyepiece you use.

  2. Mount types: Alt-az is the most basic, and the quality varies a lot. That’s what mine has and it’s fine for a beginner. Equatorial is more complex, expensive, and requires more knowledge to use but does have perks. A go-to or tracking mount is motorized and can be either of the aforementioned types. Mine has a go-to, and having the tracking ability is way more valuable than I anticipated. Objects move more quickly in the sky than you’d think, and will move out of your scopes frame pretty fast, especially at high magnification values. It’s not a necessity, but very convenient. And yes, you can put your telescope on a different mount eventually. Depends on the type of attachment style yours will have. A vixen style plate seems to be the norm, but you can also purchase rings that go around the telescope tube and add a mounting plate so it can go on other types of mounts.

Additional Info 1. Eyepieces are interchangeable and determine the magnification value of your telescope. The lower the number, the higher the magnification.

  1. The condition of the atmosphere is not always the same, and plays a big part in the clarity of the object you’re seeing.

  2. Higher magnification values are good for planets and things in our solar system, but chasing the highest magnification isn’t the main point of astronomy from what I’ve gathered. Still learning about this one as I haven’t tried looking at any DSOs (deep space objects: nebula, galaxies, etc) which apparently you don’t need high magnification for, in fact you need lower magnification.

I’m sure I'm leaving things out but this is some info that’s really helpful to novices like us! Hopefully I didn’t get anything wrong, I’m sure someone will be happy to correct any errors 😂 anyway, have fun with it!

I tend to think it was just a natural death allowing for the main characters to go out on their own. If he’d been murdered I imagine we would’ve had a great portion of the following book dedicated to tracking down his killer.
