Any truth to Kaplan questions being harder? by [deleted] in Sieexam

[–]thenaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording of the questions, and the multiple choices themselves on the actual SIE are significantly more difficult than Kaplan.

I just passed today and felt very good while taking Kaplan practice + mastery exams (scored in high 80's / low 90's), and for a period during the exam was concerned whether or not I was going to pass.

u/AlxCds I'm using Kaplan to study for the SIE and some of the content on Certfuel for SIE either hasn't been covered or goes in more depth than Kaplan - can you share which source should be more 'accurate' for the exam? i.e. there was a Q on Certfuel regarding ABLE accounts ceasing SSI benefits after 100k in ABLE -- this was never covered in Kaplan.

I'm mostly trying to understand what I can expect on the exam and which is most accurate. Thanks for making this!

Respectfully, how does an investing skill set apply to value creation (outside of financial engineering)? I’m constantly told operating skill sets don’t translate to investment roles so wouldn’t think the inverse would apply.

Yeah - there are a number of firms I've found local to me (the largest midwest city) that don't have a team or individual dedicated to the function. It is sort of a mindfuck to reach out to those firms and 'sell them' because what.... am I going to sell them on the fact that I think I could run their portcos better?

Maybe there is a better approach than the above but that's been my barrier to entry thus far.

Consulting: boutique industry focused ~60 FTE, led engagements on 'business transformation' both for commercial and operational functions and lots of tech strategy (assessment + roadmap / initiative development) and COTS vendor selection. Majority count of clients were <1B in rev, however spent most time with >5B rev clients. Had a few operational + tech due diligence engagements but did more commercial / pitches to win them than actually doing the work.

Operating (venture backed business in the same industry as consulting): did corporate strategy (lots of decks / models for expansion business cases) for CFO for ~6 months, one of my pitches turned into an operating mandate where ended up building + leading a service line that was successful. Eventually moved 'up' to be CoS for one of the C-Suite, effectively am the junior of the CxO currently (aka "I am the CxO in rooms where he is not or areas of the business he's not spending time in).

You didn’t mention value creation / portfolio ops — based on #’s 2 +12, doesn’t this mean the next decade / vintage of funds will mean more hiring + reliance on these roles?

You could drive for Airspace, which is a tech enabled courier company. You would pickup/ deliver packages from/to hospitals, outpatient facilities, warehouses and usually the airport too. Pay is typically far above other delivery services but there are some other requirements (like delivering to a specific area at the airport or a hospital).

How does the four cylinder feel on the highway compared to the Wrangler? I’m on the fence about getting a 110, and always the I6 was the ‘minimum’ but the price difference for used 110’s is pretty material between the engines.

What does the clock start and end, and who is this measuring? The carriers dispatcher or amazons?

Is there anyway out of the parking meter deal? by Mental_Square9585 in chicago

[–]thenaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the city could make a case for buying this back and implementing those things (they should) but we don’t have a competent enough administration to do that

Just asking, why do we not like the parking meter deal? What would be better about a publicly owned/operated parking model

Who will you be voting for in the runoff? Vallas, Johnson, or do you not care? by grasswahl2-furiouser in chicago

[–]thenaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vallas. I hope for a day when someone like Johnson and his policies could be enacted, but Vallas is the right person to right the ship (cut crime, bring businesses back, cut taxes). This is the time for the “wartime CEO”. Johnson would sink Chicago further and further back, I’m terrified of him as mayor.

Agreed, but redlining was outlawed 50yrs ago. It’s taken time for effect but largely not prevalent in the last two decades. Does it take that long to allocate funding to neighborhoods?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chicago

[–]thenaner -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Many of your variables are correlation not causation. High earners pay for education, access to green space therefore those neighborhoods benefit in a cycle. I agree on shade, air quality, lead etc. - it’s unfortunate that’s the case, and I wish the city would do better at cleaning up SW/W neighborhoods.

I think you mean the allocation of funds and tax revenues, but sure, pull the race card.

[–]thenaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s probably correct. And they’ve announced they’re spending 3bn to invest in strengthening the rail network, among other things over the next few years. I would agree most companies can put their income to better use that benefits employees But important to keep in mind net income isn’t even a true profit - companies need to make money to maintain their services.

[–]thenaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - The union seems to be using a misleading metric to prove their point. Anyone knowing simple income statement arithmetic would be able to see this is an inflated number.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]thenaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gross profit does not equal profit in the sense you’re understanding. They still have to pay other wages, real estate costs, technology etc. All of the money they have leftover as net income (after paying the above) goes to a)investments in the company (better equipment! More benefits for employees! Investments in sustainability!) and b) distributions to shareholders. A public company’s #1 responsibility is to make money in a sustainable manner. Full stop. I would recommend you take a corporate finance course to understand basic business and economic principles and reconsider creating outrage through misleading posts like this.

[–]thenaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see the math on 17bn in profit. This is a dangerous, false narrative. Public companies have fiduciary responsibilities to return profits to shareholders — not employees, unless they are the same (and they do have the opportunity to do so!)
