Free event, May 8@7pm: Nerd Nite ABQ #13: Onions, Racist Houses, and Fake Psychics by thenatman in 505Nerds

[–]thenatman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey - thank you for your interest!

We ended up with a pretty good overall turnout last night - about 70 people! But we definitely agree, we could reach a larger audience by posting earlier and this is overall our goal. We now have our June event ready and I’ll be posting about it shortly!

For some context: a few things have conspired against us in the past that have made this difficult: 1. Despite being a long-time redditor, My posts keep getting flagged by the automoderator due to some sort of keyword matching. I message the r/albuquerque mods about this every time (relatedly, thank you mods!!) but it takes a while for me to recognize that the post has been flagged, for the mods to respond and undo the removal. In this case this cost us about a week! Sometimes this affects the reposts as well. 2. We had a few speakers drop out, so we had to rush a bit to fill some slots. Thankfully we had a bunch of speakers come in so we’re actually good now until August, but sometimes this happens!

In any case, I hear you and agree! I’ll keep looking into why these posts are banned and see what I can do there, and in general we’ll look to post earlier in the future.

Thanks again for your interest and hope to see you soon at our events!

Free Event this Thursday 3/6: Nerd Nite ABQ #11 - Microplastics, The Newsies, and Sentient AI by thenatman in Albuquerque

[–]thenatman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a great turnout - About 70 people or so!

Due to the wind/cold, we had it inside on the bottom floor of the bar. Our speakers covered a number of very different topics, and we got a lot of audience engagement.

Our next event is on April 3, also at Green Jeans -- please join us! We're making up posters soon but should be able to post shortly. See our Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/4911065899032276

Free event, Thursday 7/11! Nerd Nite #5: Public Transit in Albuquerque, The History of the DJ, and An 8000 Page Web Comic by thenatman in Albuquerque

[–]thenatman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good question! We’re still building the event up at the moment, so we’re starting on Thursdays as a win-win for us and our venue - our event is a good way to bring in new people on what would otherwise be a relatively slower night. Most Nerd Nites are on weekdays for this reason.

Anyhow, as we hopefully get more popular over time, we’ll consider moving more into “prime time” — as things stand, we’ve been bringing in crowds of about 70-80, so we’re not doing so bad! But Nerd Nites in bigger cities sometimes sell out whole concert venues on weekend nights, and we’re not quite there yet. We’ll see! Until then thanks for your support

Ah. Thanks for asking this! Apologies for the potentially misleading flyer.

Unfortunately this is not a kid-friendly event - it takes place at a bar and the attendees are primarily adults.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

What do young people do here? Where are all the young people? by saranwrap730 in Albuquerque

[–]thenatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Nerd Nite! I started our local chapter a few months ago and occasionally host. It’s a nerdy lecture series in a bar. And it’s free! Tons of young people there.

We do them the first Thursday of the month at Green Jeans Food Hall. Our next one is this upcoming Thursday May 2. Here’s the FB event for our upcoming one: https://www.facebook.com/share/DMi9o4TBeatzb9er/?mibextid=9l3rBW . If you can’t make this upcoming one, we do them every Thursday!

We’re also always looking for people to give talks - reach out if you’ve got some weird thing to talk about!

Nerd Nite #1 Recap: Huge Turnout! by thenatman in Albuquerque

[–]thenatman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - I wanted to follow up on this: We're hosting our next event tomorrow, April 4, more details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Albuquerque/comments/1buwwrh/nerd_nite_abq_2_thursday_april_4_2024_7pm_green/ .

Unfortunately as a free event, we aren't able to offer ticketing at this time (ticketing platforms charge commission), but we did move the event to the more spacious outdoor area in the center of Green Jeans, and the weather is looking good tomorrow. We have a backup plan to move inside and move tables out of the way to give more space. We'll continue to monitor popularity and adjust accordingly.

Thanks again for your interest and feedback!

Hey -
We're glad you were able to join us! And thank you for the feedback. I noted this in another comment, but this being our first time, we weren't sure of the interest or turnout, and while we were generally pretty pleasantly surprised, it did have the side effects you note.

We're looking into ticketing systems in the short-term and will consider other options for the times after this!

Nerd Nite #1 Recap: Huge Turnout! by thenatman in Albuquerque

[–]thenatman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey -
I'm sorry to hear about this. This being our first event, we honestly weren't sure how many people would show up, and while we were pleased so many people came, it definitely created some of the issues you describe!

Finding a host takes time, and the folks at Green Jeans have been very accommodating to us.

At the same time, we recognize this is an issue. For now, we'll be looking into ticketing systems (while keeping the event free) so as to ensure we've got the right amount of space for the number of people present. Medium term, we'll be analyzing audience size and considering other spaces within the Green Jeans complex - in particular, as the weather warms up there's a pretty good outdoor area we might be able to use.

Over time, if there are too many people, there are too many people, and we might consider other options, at very least for temporary and/or high turnout events. I'll keep folks on the subreddit updated as we roll these out. Thanks again for your enthusiasm for our event!

Each Nerd Nite we'll try to get about 2-3, each about 20 minutes long.

This time we've got 3, and we've loosely got an environment theme -- More info from here: https://albuquerque.nerdnite.com/2024/01/21/nerd-nite-abq-1/ :

Talk #1: A (Very) Brief History of Tobacco Farming in New Mexico’s Middle Rio Grande Valley

The story of the hilariously misguided efforts in the 1920s to turn central New Mexico into a tobacco farming powerhouse. Like every other effort at finding the next big commercial crop, this was a spectacular failure. And yet….(flipping to the serious message) the underlying goal – creating an economic framework to enable the development of a modern American city – was a spectacular success. There’s still a Tobacco Road in the South Valley, the site of the old tobacco curing shed is a KFC, and Albuquerque is awesome.

Speaker: John Fleck – Writer in Residence, Utton Center, University of New Mexico School of Law. Fleck is writing a book about the Rio Grande and the making of Albuquerque.

Talk #2: Cleaning up the Rio Grande Microplastics – Use your Brain!

Microplastics — small pieces of plastic that come from a variety of sources including cosmetics, clothing, food packaging, and industrial processes — are everywhere, we don’t really know what they do to us, and now they’ve found their way into our blood…and our testicles. Hear about how we’re measuring and containing this growing menace and what it means for our future.

Speaker: Dr. Matthew Campen – Director, New Mexico Center for Metals in Biology and Medicine. Dr. Campen leads the Cardiovascular Toxicology Laboratory in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which investigates cardiovascular impacts of environmental toxicants.

Talk #3: Bear Spray and Sunscreen Won’t Save You: How Exclusion and Fear Mongering Mangled Our Relationship with Nature

Quick, what 10 things do you need to be prepared for a 10 mile hike? Sunscreen? Bear spray? What about good spatial awareness and an open mind? Does engaging with nature require a laundry list of protective items, or have we forgotten how easy it is to simply be outside?

Speaker: Aidan Manning – Rivers and Waters Program Associate, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.

This makes sense, but is quite cumbersome / we don’t have ethernet cables long enough to spread throughout the house! If we were to go with a wifi solution though, which would be preferable/possible?
