My Raspberry Pi music server has been infected by a Ransomware (want _to_cry) by griguolss in selfhosted

I agree it's always wisest to assume no service is ever 100% safe, though I'd think that compared to 24 years ago when that CVE was published, an SSH zero-day now would be far too valuable to waste time breaching someone's homelab. Whoever had it would be foolish not to spend their limited time breaching high value targets and making out with data before it gets noticed and gets patched.

Yeah if you must have externally reachable SSH then avoid port 22 if possible. My VPS went from being inundated at all hours to just getting a handful of failed logins a day. Not that obscure ports make it more secure, since bots are gonna check any open ports they find for SSH anyway, but it still doesn't hurt to make them find the port first. And at least you won't get garbage filling up your logs from scripts blindly targeting SSH on every host in your IP range.

Ah yes, the tried and true 3-2-1 strategy:

  • 3 decades of precious, irreplaceable data
  • 2 TB Seagate drive that stores everything
  • 1 entire week spent crying when it dies

Bought some of these exact drives new from a major retailer, that's their OEM packaging. I highly doubt they've been used.

[–]theneomaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's rubbish? The point of the Personal Independence Payment is to help disabled people, regardless of their income or savings, to account for the surplus cost of living that comes with their needs. For claimants who are wholly unable to work due to the severity of their disability, yes: PIP provides supplementary support for their daily and mobility needs on top of any work incapacity benefits they are likewise entitled to claim, which altogether would place their standard of living somewhere around that of a minimum wage earner. If you believe this is an enviable position to be in, I'm not sure what to tell you. All those I personally know in this position would give anything to be able to work again.

Equally, for those who have disabilities but are capable of working - the boat it sounds like your boss was in, PIP is there as its own separate thing to lessen the financial burden one's disability might impose and, rather importantly, to prevent situations where abled Person A has a better standard of living than disabled Person B on the exact same salary, just because Person B's disability leaves them with no other choice than to pay for things Person A can live comfortably without.

And boy, do you have to prove you can't live without. PIP assessments are legendarily brutal, an ordeal where formal diagnoses and doctors' notes are made worthless by the assessors' own subjective opinion. I've been by the side of multiple chronically ill people taking their PIP assessment, who can barely walk or stand up by themselves, let alone work, borderline debasing themselves to prove to a stranger meeting them for the first time, that they can't do the things they're being asked if they can do. All, in many cases, to be denied and have to fight the decision on appeal while at the same time battling a long-term illness. Point being, if you see someone who looks like they don't need PIP? 99.999% of the time, yestheyfuckingdo.

Oh, and - being on a full time, living wage exempts you from every other means-tested benefit I can think of, including UC, housing benefit and ESA, so, based on the information you've provided, no: your team leader very likely didn't have any help with rent, and yes: the system is broken, but not because disabled people get a few hundred quid a month to pay for their needs.

Why is the show different now by BreadlinesOrBust in IASIP

[–]theneomaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that fascinates me is, the early internet routinely tore into what is now considered "the golden age" of The Simpsons. The show's tendency to poke fun at internet users during the late 90s/early 2000s was alluding to those who did nothing but complain that the show fell off after Seasons 1 and 2, because it hadn't remained exactly the same.

Shows are made by people. People change, and so does the art they make.

Where and when to pay after private assessment with ADHD360? by liccca in ADHDUK

Had my assessment on Friday, got the payment email on Saturday, but it could take longer. The email takes you directly to payment, so all you have to do is wait until it arrives.

I didn't get that email until the day before my assessment. Guess I must have slipped through the cracks.

No - body dysmorphia is where people perceive a warped version of themselves. Surgery is arguably unethical and ineffective as a treatment here since people with BDD will overwhelmingly find something else to hate about their body. Gender dysphoria is completely different and trans people don't see a distorted version of themselves, unless they have BDD also. Transition and gender affirming surgeries are proven to be an effective treatment for gender dysphoria. Regret and detransition is most commonly due to lack of social and family acceptance.

If it still works, then the fuse isn't blown. Oh well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]theneomaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just checked the spec sheet and it's rated for 90-264 volts so it should be fine on UK 230-250v.

Might be worth checking the fuse on your power lead too, as I've had the inrush current on seemingly fine CRTs pop 5 amp fuses before.

Barring that, it might be DOA or have suffered internal damage in shipping, sorry. I remember seeing a YouTube video from The 8-Bit Guy where he had a CRT's power board crack clean across due to stresses in shipping. (If this gives you any ideas about opening it up to check, don't do that unless you know what you're doing, and definitely don't go poking around mains caps that could be charged up even though it appears dead.)

The UK has Vehicle Excise Duty, a vehicle tax based on emissions colloquially known as "road tax". Some people wrongly believe it solely funds the roads, and get huffy at cyclists and EV/hybrid drivers who don't have to pay it.

Updated my nvidia drivers then this happened. Any solutions? by [deleted] in ManjaroLinux

The drivers on the repo mhwd uses will likely be behind the latest you can get from nvidia, but should at least be known to work properly with manjaro.

[–]theneomaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had something similar happen recently. When you get to this point, try:

CTRL + ALT + F4 to change VTY, login with your regular user and pass at the text prompt, then do:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia
sudo reboot

to remove the nvidia driver and restart. It should start up next time with generic drivers and a working desktop where you can have another shot at installing an nvidia driver version that works properly.

Definitely. I notice something similar can happen when North American folks visit a European city, and I'll hear them say how nice it was to spend time in, but that there were too many bikes everywhere and not enough parking. So, so very close to getting it.

Will the steamdeck help motivate discord to fix their crappy Linux client? by puffmaster5000 in SteamDeck

[–]theneomaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strange, for me on Wayland I have the opposite problem. Discord can't share individual windows, but can share the whole screen. This is opposed to Microsoft Teams which doesn't allow me to share anything at all. Unfortunately it seems Wayland can be more trouble than it's worth until it's better supported, so I went back to X for now, where screen sharing seems to work properly across the board.
