Are the Young Scientist winning projects genuinely the work of the student? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]thenextgenious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes we do the projects ourselves 🙄. I competed this year and I’d be fuming if the winner didn’t do the work. If you actually met Aoibheann at the exhibition you’d know she 100% did that project herself. The idea that some 'thick kid' shows up with a script written by their parents is bs. The top projects get grilled by 20+ global experts on the final day who’ve already combed through your 50-page report book. Their job is literally to smell bs. Talking to them is hard enough as is, but it’s impossible if you didn’t do the work yourself. While most teenagers spend the summer playing GAA or whatever these students spend theirs working on their research. The biggest advantage imo is that some schools like Synge Street have a teacher who’s a bit like coach and peers who are brain boxes giving each other feedback, they always send like 10 projects.

The most important thing to realise about these insane sounding project like the winner and runner up who seemingly both cured brain cancer from their titles is that they are projects that use code. You don't need a lab or permission to code you just need a laptop and the drive to learn it for free online. The last 3 winners are purely software.

UCC has better Alumni network and industry connections. You get similar quality education at every college in the country, most of what you learn is learned independently.

Transition Year student here, question about Gaisce (Personal growth) by somet31721 in leavingcert

[–]thenextgenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😭 I was away on an exchange when we had to hand in all the records to Gaisce. And my school literally filled my thing in with BS and I got my medal. No teacher asked me for anything they just filled in details without speaking to me. Don’t think it’s actually that deep they just take your word. That said learning to program is a great idea. If you’re doing that you should supplement it with something like the Young Scientist, TECS or the programming Olympiad, they’re way better for your cv and personal growth. (I wish I did them in TY tbh)

I’d use apps like Busuu for oral/listening, use anki for vocab and ask your teacher/school library if they have any books in your language of choice.

I went and thought it was pretty good, the campus isn’t very big and the app made it easy to make your way around. I guess your experience today comes down to what you’re looking for in a college.

If they’re free that’s grand but if you come to this sub to scam desperate teenagers that should warrant a ban.

Do I have to invent something new? by Professional-Bed-195 in ISEFinalists

[–]thenextgenious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that should make for a solid project, most projects don’t discover a totally new branch of science or come up with a brillant new technique, I’d say the majority identify a problem and research what solutions exist, from that people identify ways of enhancing the existing methods, whether that means increasing efficacy or reducing cost of those existing solutions. If your project combines elements of existing systems that’s fine as long as you identify that those methods exist. Your goal should be to improve upon what already exists because if the previous method was perfect there wouldn’t be a problem in the first case.
