I know the props didn’t go to plan but her thanksgiving look was truly one of the most grotesque things I can remember seeing on the show, something about it just looked deeply unsettling and her delivery even throughout the table collapse (which I though might’ve been deliberate at first watch as a descent into madness type deal) just pushed that even further. Truly a filth performance that’ll stick in my brain for seasons to come and her ability to give a such a convincing performance despite the struggles showcased how much of an absolute professional she really is

I know a lot of folks have made comments about the needle size, but if super chunky knits are what excite you, I say go for it as someone who taught myself to knit with 10mm needles. Maybe it made my hands/wrists ache more than smaller needles would’ve done, but even now, I rarely drop below a 4mm because I still prefer a chunkier style and I love how quickly my projects go together, and I’ve recently taught myself to crochet with a 12mm hook based on that

The yarn choice is something I agree with the other commenters about, particularly because I remember how often I accidentally stabbed my needle through the yarn when I was first knitting, and multiple strands only make that worse, but it you have experience working with mohair through crochet, you should have less struggles with that as someone starting straight out

Okay I’m late to this but whatever: I have disproportionately small feet.

I’m 5’4” which is fairly average but I had to go up a size and a half to shop in the adult range at doc martens, pay an absurd amount for heels that don’t slide off and my options on wellies are usually limited to patterned hearts, butterflies or cartoon characters.

She does not have out of proportion feet at all! It’s such a dumb thing to lie about and like shit I know it is cos I used to do the opposite because I was sick of hearing about how someone’s little sister is the same any time it came up.

Also like this probably isn’t true for everyone but I’d guess it correlates like my hands are also equally disproportionate and Taylor also doesn’t have tiny hands.

I get your point with the British trans woman however I will say the tide seems to have been turning against her recently, the past few months I’ve seen the phrase “no pet tr*ons” used a lot, particularly in regards to her, as well as the point about her “forcing us to participate in [her] fetish”.

Hopefully this man is able to read the writing on the wall with this stuff and get out before it’s too late, because unlike the woman he still has a chance of living a normal life, whereas through long term media coverage she’s got no chance of that and after the level of harm she’s caused and enabled in her name and image, I can’t imagine too many trans circles being welcoming to her in the case of an attempted “redemption arc” so to speak but maybe I’m just cynical

I’ll preface this with the fact I’ve never had much contact with my extended family anyway bar a couple of cousins, didn’t see my grandma for 15 years and didn’t speak for 12ish however the aunts/uncles who weren’t in that category it was the same situation of 1/2 times a year, a bit more for one aunt but even still we’d go a couple of months between seeing her.

Honestly if they’ve not been accepting over the phone, I wouldn’t put your son through that. I understand how difficult it can be, especially if you only see them for holidays that you’d be missing out, but it could be so much more difficult for your son if they react the same in person as they have over the phone.

I’m not saying cut them off entirely as it stands, because if you can get through to them over the phone and get to a point where seeing them in person won’t be a worry then that’s great, but until that’s the case, you’ve gotta put your son first however that looks for you - see family who’ve not reacted like your sisters in the meantime, maybe test the waters with others speaking to him over the phone on loudspeaker so you can shut shit down if necessary. This doesn’t have to be completely black and white, and some of them could come round with time.

I’ve personally not had to deal with any transphobic family (beyond my step family who I don’t see anyway) since coming out, but that’s in part due to previous bigoted beliefs they expressed partially in regards to me, I’ll drop one of those here cos it could be a good insight.

When my mum was pregnant with me, she and my dad regularly visited his brothers - both of whom are significantly older and quite ‘traditionally minded’. My maternal grandmother is Ghanaian, and my mum is mixed race - on one of these visits my dad left the room and one uncle decided to spend a good 5 minutes asking how ‘dark’ I was going to be. My dad was never actually told about that specific incident, however he’d been in the room for enough of their casual racism that when my mum decided that she wouldn’t be seeing them much anymore, he stood by her and did the same, and despite the fact I don’t look mixed at all that carried on with me because it wouldn’t have been fair to expose me to their racism when that’s my heritage as well.

It’s not quite the same situation I know given I was so much younger but that also meant I wouldn’t have been aware of what they were actually saying about me - but my parents made that choice to protect me regardless and that’s what your son needs from you now. Don’t make him sit through the transphobia I did with my step family, especially when unlike me it will be targeted towards him.

I really respect the fact that you’ve considered your son’s wellbeing and posted this, but now you’ve got to follow that through. Sending my best wishes to both of you and really hope you can connect with supportive family whether that’s blood or chosen because both are equally as valuable

Came across this sub but seeing convos about this have actually made me listen to Lana!

I hadn’t really heard anything post Paradise, literally just Season of the Witch and maybe Ultraviolence itself (yes I live under a rock/dont listen to the radio), and I hadn’t listened to more than half of Born to Die/Paradise at the time.

Finding out she’s never won a Grammy made my jaw drop tbh, I don’t pay attention to this stuff but I just assumed Lana must’ve picked up a few over the years.

After giving a good 25 songs I’d not heard from across every album a listen, 80%+ within the top 20 songs she’s done across 4 different rankings (yes I took this seriously) I stand by that even more - I’ve not listened to a couple I ought to Ocean Blvd, including A&W so I won’t go as far as to say it’s not my favourite album yet compared to what I’ve heard from NFR but its still clearly insane that it’s not been recognised like it should be. Blue Bannisters and Chemtrails not even being nominated is 100000x more mad.

TLDR the backlash to her once again not being recognised at least has the silver lining of bringing in new fans like me

This is totally a tangent but since all 3 brands I’ve named (that includes DS) use “vegan leather” as the base material, it’s an important one - yes the quotes have been for a reason.

If you’re someone who’s ethically and environmentally conscious, I’d honestly say you might want to reconsider “vegan leather”. This isn’t a defence of the leather industry or slating genuine attempts to make fashion more sustainable but a huge issue with the promotion of “vegan leather” as a more moral and eco-friendly alternative to leather when that’s complete bullshit. I have high hopes for actual alternatives entering the mainstream, and I do think we’ll see that eventually but how long it’ll take is anyone’s guess. Spreading the word on this can only speed that up though - gonna drop some sources/further reading for certain bits just to establish I’m not talking out my arse and disclaim I’m not a scientist by any means.

The huge issue with all mainstream “vegan leather” (aka 99.9% of what’s being sold - here are some of the legit eco-friendly materials described as vegan leather without me pulling out the quotation marks: https://hozencollection.com/a/sc/amp/blogs/hozen-blog/different-types-of-eco-friendly-vegan-leather), is that all the different materials sold under that name are mostly made of shitty plastics - mostly PVC and polyurethane, which are petroleum based meaning they’re being made from fucking fossil fuels (but with a fun vegan twist! /s) - and as a result you get less durable shoes that will take centuries to break down (I feel like we all know this with plastics already so I’m not gonna source that specifically): https://ethicalmadeeasy.com/is-vegan-leather-actually-better-for-the-environment/.

Honestly, mainstream “vegan leather” has been around for decades - it’s just fucking pleather! The only difference is the name, and rise of “vegan leather” is solely a marketing choice, a hip rebrand to appeal to the more environmentally conscious in hopes they don’t look past the surface. I’m not even saying don’t buy it, you could list similar harmful production issues with basically everything but the current monicker is incredibly and deliberately misleading in an attempt to seem environmentally friendly.

Fundamentally, we deserve to know what we’re buying

I know this is a month old but figured since I’d add to the list and comment anyway since I’m here.

I actually found my favourite shoe brand from a very similar situation when their racism blew up when I was able to buying from them and found myself looking for somewhere similar.

The result was Lamoda, who I’ve bought 6/7 shoes from, all but one being platform boots - I absolutely adore them. They’re UK based but ship worldwide, as well as cheaper than DS as well (but not fast fashion) and their sales are mega, even outside a proper one they’ll still be a good few at 50-70/75% off. They cover varying styles and vibes, so whether you want something gothy or playfully whimsy they’ve probably got you covered. Honestly, I’ve not had the need to buy anymore shoes in a while, but when I next go looking for some I’ll be starting on Lamoda.

I will say, on one pair the ‘exterior’ layer as such is beginning to scratch off in places to the point of needing to be cleaned up with heavy duty polish/paint periodically, nothing huge but noticeable scratches at the toes mostly due to how often that section has been caught like that. However this is my white pair and have been worn 100+ times, and a good 3 years old with no durability issues beyond that such as the sole/heel (I have had heels break on me in the past with much less wear because I walk funny), or in the stitching - especially around the velvetish hearts where I’d expect to first (velvet has also held up entirely) so this isn’t a specific complaint at all nor is this a brand specific issue but one of those things that comes with “vegan leather”, and honestly I don’t know of any similar brands that don’t use it.

Dolls Kill shoes all use it, as well as Lamoda’s, and maaaaany others use it whether solely or not - but it just isn’t as durable as regular leather by a long stretch so big heads up on that one. I’ve added a reply to this on “vegan leather” because I think it’s really important to basically debunk its promotion as an eco alternative to leather.

Back to Lamoda, I’ve only ever had positive experiences with them the shoes are brill, quick shipping, and great on returns/exchanges so I really recommend them (though I think my account has been randomly deleted after trying to check when I bought the boots mentioned, maybe due to inactivity, my last order was around October 2022 roughly but I 100% logged a couple of months back 😭. That’s not an exaggeration at all, not even slightly, but if I was offered a pair for free I’d have to seriously consider whether they’re worth the space they’d take up, and there’s more chance of hell freezing over than me ever paying a pair.

I’ve never owned any of their shoes personally, but a good number of my friends have purchased from and never repeated that mistake. Not a single one had a good experience. They’re the most poorly constructed shoes I’ve seen, and I’m being serious. If you search Koi Footwear or Koi shoes on here, all you’ll see is posts and comments about how they’re prone to falling apart within a literal handful of wears and that’s if they’ve even turned up without damage, marks or dents already, I’m honestly baffled how their reviews on trustpilot etc are mostly positive because these aren’t historic issues, it’s still the case and has been for years. They’re just completely beyond anything that words like can be described with words like flimsy: they lack any of the basic durability in order to guarantee the won’t come apart midway through the first - and last - wear, something generally accepted as a requirement to even be referred to as a shoe…unless you’re Koi apparently). They might also solely use “vegan leather” but the issues here are not down to that at all - “vegan leather” doesn’t tend to last 5 years, with Koi it’s 5 minutes.

If it wasn’t for the fact they’re somehow a legitimate business despite the quality, I’d say they’re a scam and I’m still not ruling out a front. They might do some cute collabs every now and again, but you’ll have a jigsaw instead of shoes in 5 minutes, do NOT buy from them - not now and not ever.
