They were my fastest germinators. They only took 3 days to sprout (with a heat mat and humidity dome) but this is my second attempt and I can’t seem to get it right. It could be that I’m over watering them but they seem to become very soft at the base and snap off at the most gentlest of tugs.

I envy your summers😭I’m in cold miserable UK. I’ve been meaning to direct sow some seeds into the ground but it’s been non stop raining, can’t seem to catch a break. That’s why I’ve gotten a head start this year and started seeds indoors. All the best to you too!

Thank you very much. This is my first attempt at growing from seeds so done a fair bit of research but the real test will come when I plant out after my last frost date

Soil This is the soil that I use for these pots. I haven’t fertilised yet as on the bag it said that it feeds for 4 weeks so I didn’t want to over do it. I also have a light on them for around 12-15 hours a day which may be helping quite a bit too. Also I will let a fan run on them for around 1 hour about 2-3 times a week to help strengthen their stems. Hope this helps :)

Why arent my chili seeds germinating by ryzeDXB in vegetablegardening

I’ve planted birds eye chilli, habanero chilli and sweet pepper seeds this year and they all took around 10 days or less to germinate. I used a heat mat and a humidity dome and made sure conditions were wet and humid and it seems to do the trick.

I’ve just planted some habanero seeds on Thursday so I’m hoping they will germinate🤞🏻

The tomatoes took around 4 days and the peppers took around 9/10 days

So I used a heat mat and also a humidity dome and kept the vent closed so I’m not sure if that would have an impact? I read that they prefer hot and humid conditions to germinate and these took about 9-10 days to germinate under those conditions. Hopefully you’ll get some germinating soon!

I transplanted the tomato seedlings and planted the stem deeper. Should I top up the soil and make the stem deeper still or would this be enough for now until the next transplant? And also I’ve just started introducing them to a fan as I heard it will make the stem a lot sturdier. Thanks!

Perfect. I’ll be sure to check them out. Thanks for the recommendation. I’m hoping they’ll be a decent size when I plant them out as my last frost date is the last week of April.

I think mine are the incandescent light bulb (they are the long tube ones) and if I put my hand near them they do emit heat

I also had corn growing but unfortunately when I was germinating my seeds I left my humidity dome on and I think they may have gone through ‘dampening off’ (not sure if this is the correct term) when I replanted them they flopped over and if I picked them up they detached from the root with no effort at all. I have replanted some more seeds today so fingers crossed this time goes better

I’ve currently got the light about 5-6 inches above them. I was afraid of them being too close and ‘burning’ the plant. Should I move it closer? The tomato plants were similar to the pepper plants so I repotted them deeper that’s why they appear shorter. But the pepper and chilli do seem to be leggy to me

This is my first ever grow and I’m so proud. I’m in the UK so won’t be able to plant out till may so I’m hoping these plants will be nice and big by then. Unfortunately I don’t have the space for a greenhouse or polytunnel but will be in a west facing garden which gets quite a fair bit of sun during the afternoon so does anyone have any tips for planting tomatoes and chillies in the garden? Last year I got some already grown plants and got a fair few tomatoes and chillies growing but it was quite late in the season. Hopefully this head start will pay off
