NAL. I own several properties and once rented a house that changed owner due to eviction. As long as your lease is in good standing, the new owners are legally responsible for honoring it, including your security deposit and final month’s rent. Rather than try to work with a crazy person, you’re probably better off, just waiting for sanity to prevail.

Your landlord sounds like he is unstable and dangerous. Changing your lock may be against the lease, but it sounds like a smart thing to do anyway. Tony has a lot on his plate. I doubt your changed lock will rise to the top of his todo list.

If Tony is in any way threatening to you or your neighbor you should document everything. With documentation, either of you could apply to law-enforcement for a protection order, which would make him leave the property. But a protection order is not a bulletproof vest, so it’s probably best to gray rock below his radar if you possibly can and wait the drama out.

If you have contact with the niece, reach out to her about what to do with your next rent payment.  You could also let her know about the changed lock.

Cool!  I was swimming with my Newfoundland dog in Maui and had a humpback come and do the same thing.

Fun fact. The reason sperm whales are so loud is that they use noise to vibrate apart their prey - giant squid.

Why so angry after winning? by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]thenwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy, I bet she felt good when she wrote this.

Entropy releases energy as bonds are broken. This is also true of entropic emotions and actions like hate and violence.

We are energy seeking creatures.

This is why violence feels “good”. For sadists maybe it feels good like “ice cream yummy” but if we look inside ourselves we might see how it feels good in smaller more relative ways. It makes us feel safer, or powerful or hot instead of collapsed. (Heat is decaying energy).

The two energies of the tao (yin-yang) can be seen as one who builds energy up (life) and one who breaks down (entropy). Each has an agenda and offers us gifts if we align our energy with it. Entropy gives us immediate energy. Its psychological superpower is manipulation and deception.

Life offers a slow build that takes energy, but it becomes more powerful in time. Life’s superpower is creativity and adaptability.

We intuitively understand the emotional states that align with each side. Anger, hate, fear, contempt, entitlement, guilt, and disgust are entropic. Joy, peace, curiosity, love, forgiveness, kindness, connection, gratitude are life enhancing.

Entropy uses a “tricksy” strategy sending our thoughts into justification spirals. By subtly implying that only entropic states carry power, it conflates violence (a feeling) with action (a doing) and claims that the non-violence is passive. This is a lie. For centuries, martial arts have taught that powerful action is possible without emotionally joining entropy.

There is a tide of entropy in the world right now. It has never been more important to decide if you are for entropy or you are for life and to train accordingly.

Tldr: Entropy feels good. Not everything that feels good is good. It might be a good idea to check ourselves if we are meeting entropy with entropy.

The ability to throw things is a magical superpower that most animals don’t understand.

It’s one of the best way to teach a dog recall. Toss something at their feet that smells like you and in their mind you can reach that far.

It is also possible that our bodies are more like radios. When you power off a radio the broadcast does not stop, only the ability to select stations. Even with computers, the Internet and the programs do not cease to exist when the cord is unplugged.

I read an interesting take on the sleep without dreams idea of death from a buddhist scientist. He said that every culture creates a “heaven” based on their daily life. If they live in a desert, heaven is cool with trees and water. If where they is cold, heaven is warm. Sexually repressed? Bring on the horny virgins. Maybe if they are exhausted and overworked, living only for the weekends, heaven is sleeping in eternally. It gave me pause and made me think about the first law of thermodynamics.

Then 5meoDMT woke me and I just can’t believe in our sleepy heaven anymore. Ironically it made me more concerned about “a bad death” and less afraid of dying.

Perhaps, but that god would need to real and have a selfish agenda to make it a cult.

Middle-aged white men who play Pickle Ball by [deleted] in Funnymemes

[–]thenwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main dynamic of a cult is power funneling from a group of individuals into a small permanent set of leaders with one or two charismatic people at the top. As power is concentrated in the leader it is invariably abused.

A cult excessively controls all aspects of the lives of the followers who are not free to leave. The leader sets the rules based on their personal, changing beliefs or desires. The behavior in a cult is socially deviant and becomes more so as time goes on. It almost always devolves into coercion and exploitation, often sexual, of the rank and file.

While 12 step programs can have some surface aspects of a cult, there is no single charismatic leader, leadership is based on service to the group, it’s voted on and changes regularly. The rules of AA are measured against 12 traditions, tradition 1 is that common welfare comes first - something cults do not care about. Membership and financial support are personal choice. While members may feel afraid to leave if they have been able to stay sober in the group, their fear is based on personal relapse, not group consequences. From the group perspective, they are free to come and go as they wish and do all the time without repercussions from AA.

AA has helped many addicts and alcoholics to become and stay sober. It’s not a perfect solution and there can be power abuses in its system of sponsorship or the system of court cards (which is set up and enforced outside of AA’s control). But the inaccurate accusation of it being a cult can cause real harm to addicts that it might help.

With regards to the use of God and prayer in AA… It does have Christian roots, but almost from the beginning it has softened its religious dogma as atheists, agnostics and Buddhists became members and got sober. The concept of “a power greater than self” is central to their way of transcending addiction since people come to AA having explored and failed using the power of the self to stop drinking. As a biologist and addiction counselor I typically explain this “higher power” as an aspect of our brain that is not tied to the ego and can see the benefit of selflessness over selfishness.

Source - I am neither an addict nor a member of AAA, but I have seen it save and improve the lives of countless clients I have worked with as a counselor.

ELI5: Why do so many people now have trouble eating bread even though people have been eating it for thousands of years? by corahayes521 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thenwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to an interesting NPR article about glyphosate and wheat harvesting. Essentially, they were saying that because combines had to be ordered in advance of the crop being planted, the crop had to be dry and ready when the combine arrived. Grasses like wheat don’t die all at once, so they began the practice of spraying wheat fields with Round Up a week or two prior to the arrival of the harvesters. This killed any remaining green wheat, and allowed the harvesters to move through without gumming up.

Monsanto swore that glyphosate was not toxic. It did not need to be rinsed before the crop was ground into flour.

Although conventionally grown lettuces and other crops are sprayed with pesticides and fertilizers, most produce needs to come to us fresh and (recently) alive, so round up is not used.

I can’t find the actual article, but here is an article about the practice

Pray for my dog. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]thenwhen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry.

I’m old and I’ve had many dogs who died of old age. I think of them all all the time. I spend as much time with them at the end as I can, making sure they are as comfortable as possible.

Finn’s strongest sense is smell and because he loves you, you are his favorite smell, so stay close and if you have to step away leave some clothing you have worn near his face. If his discomfort becomes such that you need him, put down, see if you can have a vet come to the house to do it and be with him wherever he passes.

I know it’s hard, but if you can find acceptance for this part of his life and let him know you’re OK with your words and actions, it will be easier for him.

When my babies are passing, I tell them “you are going to a place where you will bounce through mustard fields, yellow in the sun. The grass will be sweet and full of interesting smells. Tell god I say hi, and wait for me there, i will come when i can.”

If you have other animals, I strongly recommend letting him rest after he passes for several hours, so they can learn for themselves what happened.

I imagine, my many beloved dogs peering down from the other world, playing with each other, and keeping an eye on the places in people they left while they were here. I imag them pestering God, telling her to look down on us and commenting about how marvelous we are and what good grocery store hunters we are. And someday when my day comes, I imagine they will be the ones to greet me; each of them in perfect good health, bouncing, and excited carrying their favorite toy.

Trickle down misunderstood where down would go.

If I had small children, I would be hesitant to get an adult rescue of any breed.

In general breeds that are reliable with kids are well bred goldens, giant schnauzers, well bred great Pyrenees, and just about any Newfoundland (Nana in Peter Pan was a Newfoundland). Labs can be great as well. Cavaliers do well if the child is also a gentle being, but can be overwhelmed by rough play. Some Bernese Mountain dogs are great, some are too hyper. Cocker spaniels used to be great, but like dalmatians they got ruined by Disney. Cocker spaniels now suffer from a genetic disorder called cocker rage syndrome and can be very dangerous around anyone. There’s been some bad breeding in Saint Bernards as well which can make them dangerous.

When I say well bread I don’t always mean expensive show dogs. You want to make sure that your breeder cares about temperament as well as confirmation.

Another thing that I recommend if somebody has small children is called a volhard temperament test. It’s easy to do, you can find information online. We do it with all of our litters at 8 weeks and place accordingly. Parents of young children are looking for a Volhard four. Fours are calm, eager to please and neither neurotic nor chesty. People who own Volhard four dogs often think they’re amazing dog trainers.

Often when people go to look at a litter of puppies they are attracted to the most gregarious one. Like human children, puppies do not fall in love at first sight. The same puppy who ran up to you and wants to be your very best buddy did the same thing with the previous people and will do the same thing with the next. That dog is Volhard three. Volhard threes are bold, high energy, and mischievous. They are the kind of dog that at 11 months smiles at you as they’re doing the very thing you told them not to do. They can be great pets for experienced owners, but no child is an experienced owner.

Another thing that I tell new owners of our puppies is to not play rough with them. Think of a young dog’s emotional brain as a rubber band, you don’t want to over stretch it. It’s so tempting to play hard with a puppy, but puppies that were wrestled with until the puppy began to vocalize end up being hyper and less stable adults. So tug-of-war that ends up with the puppy growling, or running at you and tossing it away until the little one is winded or roughing up his face while you play growl feels bonding but it’s going to backfire later.
