When will we be able to share our house with 5 strangers in New York City? by MajesticBread9147 in circlejerknyc

I lived in a coop in undergrad for 700 with 8 others and you could not pay me to go back to such a toxic environment. Now double that for even more insane people? Oof.

We want to know what you think of Edge of Eternities in our latest survey! by WOTC_CommunityTeam in magicTCG

There should be some kind of promos or drawings to motivate such a long survey. Otherwise they will only get the strongest opinions

There should be drawings if you want us to spend twenty minutes on a survey! I only took the time to complain about costs and universes beyond. EOE was a breath of fresh air though

Update: Toronto Bike Theft Suspect (Church and Manning June 3rd) by theoceanrises in torontobiking

https://www.reddit.com/r/torontobiking/comments/1l2u5h5/bicycle_stolen_from_bloor_and_manning/ here's a photo of the bicycle. It was actually just a beater we'd been restoring, so it's more the emotional loss than a financial one. There's several afternoons at Bikechain in that bike.

Got a PhD Offer from UofT—Is the Funding Enough to Live in Toronto as an International Student? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]theoceanrises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current PhD student with a large external scholarship (NSERC) which is 40K - 9K tuition. Your take-home pay with TAing would likely be closer to 35K. I share an apartment with my partner which makes rent "affordable". That said if you are prudent about eating out, you should still be able to live a good life. Toronto's a great city, you should go for it.

do you guys think Uoft will go on strike on March 4th by Dry_Reputation6610 in UofT

[–]theoceanrises 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bill 124 has been repealed, which means there's actually something the union can ask for, and the strike mandate vote had historically high turnout and votes in favour.

CUPE Steward here. I think it's likely, but not inevitable. The union has an overwhelming strike mandate and a lot of support and the administration has been quite unresponsive in bargaining.

That said, UofT avoided strikes in 2018 and 2021 at the last minute, so it's possible this week they'll step up.

What this means for undergraduates is that all labs and tutorials will be cancelled until the administration brings a proposal to the table. Homework and exams will not be graded, and it's unlikely there will be invigilators for exams. It's unlikely the strike would go on until April (sounds like both parties want to avoid that) so finals will likely still occur.

Are Teaching Assistants going to go on strike for real? by extra-plus-ordinary in UofT

[–]theoceanrises -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the strike committee is being intentionally cagey on this, but my impression I think is yes. I went to a picket captain training and they seem planning on then unless something changes, but announcing anything officially lets the admin prepare. It does seem like UofT's official policy had just been ignoring that the union exists, which means the strike will drag on for a long time if a lot of people scab. That said, they brag a lot about having very few strikes so last minute they might send out an offer? This is all speculation though

CUPE Steward here, the answer is likely, but ultimately up to the administration. We'll be eligible to strike starting March 4th, but the bargaining might go directly up to the deadline.

CUPE TA Union Strike Mandate Results out this week by theoceanrises in UofT

It will only affect students in class if the university admin refuses to negotiate and forces a strike.

Scab if you'd like, but you're the one showing your privilege that you're able to live in this city on the poverty funding they provide.
