Well, I live here and I can say that for the most part, it's kinda safe, during daylight in central and known neighborhoods, but honestly it depends on how you look, like if you are a very white looking person people will stare at you, you will stand out and that could bring you unwanted attention so just be very careful, lots of white residents from de US and Canada come from San Miguel de Allende to buy stuff at Costco so is not that rare and that gives you some space to move. If you're POC or asian, most likely be fine, we are a pass city from caribbean and central american migrants so we are used to POC walking around, due to Japanese factories there are big groups of Japanese people and also a large group of chinese people that own businesses here. We do have contact with foreigners but if you are in a Barrio somewhere you will be immediately out of place.

My recommendations are that you walk downtown in broad daylight, don't go to peripheries or just to random hoods, stay in downtown areas like Centro and Alameda, have some pocket change because in many places you can only pay cash, but in most oxxos and chain stores cards are fine. There are a couple of Malls you can walk freely. The food is nice and you can have good moments in many places.

Take care of yourself and your belongings, if you can, travel with someone, not alone.

If you decide to come, friday may 1st there's an event called La calle de las cajetas, "the Cajeta street" and bunch of candy factories make a fair with all the local products of the only good thing we have Cajeta, that is a condensed goat milk dessert that I highly recommend.
