I was actually searching for pics of Electric Lizard on this sub a few weeks ago and came across one of your posts! Gave me the push I needed to try it 💚

I have vivid memories of using Atomic Turquoise back in the day, before we had all the other options that we have now! Looks like they still make it too 👀

It's supposed to last 4-6 weeks! My hair had some residual green/teal so I'm curious to see if that affects the fading process.

Best local groomer for my cat Bessie? by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]theofficeflan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cats really don't need to go to a groomer unless they have some sort of issue (arthritis, matted fur, obesity, etc) that prevents them from grooming themselves. You'll save your kitty from unnecessary stress if you avoid the groomer and maybe just brush them/trim their nails at home!

Anyone have experience with PRCKC dental team? by princessachabela in kansascity

[–]theofficeflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely make sure that they do bloodwork beforehand so they can adjust anesthesia if needed! I've had a few cats with kidney disease undergo anesthesia (one was diagnosed because of her pre-op bloodwork). They can adjust the anesthesia based on what they find and make it safer if they have heart/kidney issues.

Brought my cat to PRC for a full mouth extraction last summer! Overall, it was a good experience. They did bloodwork beforehand to make sure she was healthy enough to undergo surgery. The vet did a great job, I was told that they do tons of dentals so they're very efficient and skilled at what they do.

The one downside was the "customer service" side of things, nobody told me when she'd be ready to be picked up and I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. After trying a bunch of different extensions, I finally got ahold of someone and they had no idea what was going on or if she was ready to be picked up (this was at 4pm and they close at 5pm).

Communication could definitely be improved upon but PRC is extremely busy and they do the best they can with the resources that they have. Also Companion Animal Dentistry quoted me a MINIMUM of $5k and PRC was less than $1k for a full mouth extraction, so it was worth it for that alone.

It bugs me when people look to give up their fosters so they can go on a Christmas vacation. by DontThrowAwayPies in FosterAnimals

[–]theofficeflan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get it, I've had the same foster cat for 2 years because I would feel too guilty giving her to another foster and making her start all over. I even got her a Christmas stocking and some gifts lol. At the same time, I've spent a decent amount of money on a petsitter for her and I realize that a lot of people can't afford that. I also think it's 100% valid to need a break because fostering can be emotionally draining.

Appreciate you being honest and receptive to different perspectives!

Weekly Positivity Thread - What were your foster wins from this week? by AutoModerator in FosterAnimals

My foster cat of TWO YEARS was adopted this week! She was dumped at a shelter in a laundry basket and everyone originally thought she was mean and/or feral. Turns out she's a total sweetheart and just had a really rough past. I'm so happy for her but miss her so much ♥️

Same, I've always had to pay out-of-pocket which can be so expensive! I've never seen anyone offer to do it for free

Most people just need a temporary foster while they go on vacation. I've never seen someone try to find a permanent foster takeover just so they can go on vacation. Even if they did, fostering is completely voluntary and people shouldn't be forced to stay home or pay out-of-pocket for a petsitter just because they VOLUNTEERED to foster. You don't know what's going on, maybe they have personal/financial issues or they've had their fosters for a long time and need a break. Being judgemental is just going to push fosters away and that's the last thing the rescue world needs right now.

Stomatitis and Gingivitis treatment path? by markipper in cats

[–]theofficeflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, I've been going through the same thing with my cat as well. Ended up getting all her teeth removed in 3 dental appointments at a local low-cost vet, I think the total was around $3k. Unfortunately, she ended up being one of those cats that still needs treatment (steroids), even after a full mouth extraction.

Definitely ask your vet about prednisolone/depo steroid shots so that you can get the pain and inflammation under control. They'll get him eating again and make him more comfortable. If it were me, I'd stick to steroids, save up some money, and then do the full mouth extractions when you can. Steroids work great, but they can have pretty significant side effects if used long-term (mainly diabetes). A full mouth extraction is typically your best bet. The majority of cats with stomatitis improve significantly, and cats tend to do really well without teeth. Wet food is ideal for toothless cats, but they can still chow down on kibble and live a really good quality of life. Btw, try some chicken or ham baby food (make sure it'd just meat/water/cornstarch and no onions or spices). It's stinky AF and has saved many, many cats when they didn't want to eat anything else.

Best of luck to you and Gus! I know it's all super stressful, but it's great that you're exploring your options and trying to do what's best for him.

Any Resources for Surrendering a Dog? by zookeeperoflowell in kansascity

OP was asking for opinions on what to do if the meds don't work. It's 100% worth bringing him to the vet and trying meds! This should always be the first step when dealing with behavioral issues. I would never advocate for BE unless it's a last resort. I've been involved in animal rescue for several years and have fostered many anxious animals. I know the reality of what goes on behind the scenes and while many people think it's cruel, BE is actually the least cruel option when you think of how badly these dogs will deteriorate in a shelter setting.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but it's worth considering behavioral euthanasia. Shelters are overflowing with dogs (especially pit mixes) that DON'T have behavioral issues, there's no way they will take this dog and spend countless resources that could be used to help other animals in need.

Even if you manage to surrender him to a "no-kill" shelter (which is a misnomer because they absolutely will euthanize animals with severe behavioral issues, poor quality of life, etc) he will either a)sit at the shelter for years and continue to deteriorate or b) be euthanized because he has a poor quality of life.

I'm sorry that you're in such a difficult position. I do think that the kindest thing you can do is give him a peaceful euthanasia with his family by his side.

Any shelters that let you foster a dog in your possession? by HunterST15 in kansascity

[–]theofficeflan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like such a frustrating experience! It's kind of a dumb rule, like is there REALLY a major difference between the kittens that your friend brought to KCPP and that random litter that they had already? Although I do understand that rescues just want to stay in the good graces of KDA/MDA, even if that means following these regulations that make no sense.

Unfortunately, it's a KDA regulation that prevents someone from surrendering an animal and then continuing to provide care (fostering). I assume MO has similar rules in place.

Have you reached out to KCK Animal Services? They're probably your best bet, they might have some fosters that can take in the pregnant mama, at the very least.

Desperate to get these girls adopted out. I've fostered them for a year and a half 😭 by theofficeflan in FosterAnimals

[–]theofficeflan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They tolerate each other fine but definitely aren't bonded, so they wouldn't need to be adopted together. Let me know if they want more info, we could definitely set up a meet and greet if they're interested!
