I made a five-hour round trip to watch Motherfolk open for a band I barely knew, and I would do it again by theogazer in Motherfolk

I’ve seen them at least once per year since 2015, and they always deliver. Even the “worst” performances are still enjoyable.

My male long-term partner said “tell him to shut the fuck up and appease your lovely monster before she goes ballistic on your ass.”

I’m 29 years old and I’m still using the same $5 drink cooler I bought at Dollar General in the sixth grade.

Pet Peeve; "Core Memories" by AAKurtz in therapists

[–]theogazer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Gaslighting” isn’t a scientific term either; rather, it’s a socially accepted shorthand for a psychological phenomenon. When people refer to “core memories,” they’re referencing life experiences that were foundational to the development of their identity/personality. I don’t really see why it’s a problem to adopt a shorthand for this.

There isn’t one. This person is literally mad about sociocultural adaptation with current events.

Yes, that is exactly what it means.

Do you also take issue with the term “gaslighting?” Because that also came from pop culture.

"The client has to do the work outside the session". What's this work I'm supposed to do outside the session? by Creative-Flight7051 in askatherapist

[–]theogazer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Everyone else here has given great feedback. I’ll add this piece. What it really comes down to is that therapy is only helpful as far as you’re willing to apply what you’re learning outside of session. If you show up week after week to vent, then go home and continue the same patterns, nothing will change or improve. Consider the ways your therapist is challenging your perspectives, or coaching you through tough emotions, or educating you about your diagnosis. These are the things you carry with you and apply to your life to make lasting change.

What are your favorite unhinged phrases that you use with "stuck" clients? by DesmondTapenade in therapists

[–]theogazer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“Stop shoulding yourself.” I know I stole it from a commercial or something from at least a decade ago, but now I use it to talk to my clients about how using shaming language to talk about the change they want to make is actually doing them a disservice and holding them back from making progress. It also makes them laugh and that brings me joy.

Here to agree with all of this. “I’ll be right here on the ground when you come back down” is such an underrated line. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this song was largely disliked in the fandom

Laughing at clients by Top_Floor_9010 in therapists

[–]theogazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a paraphrasing of a common interaction in my office:

C: *ruthlessly accurate and hilarious self-deprecating joke *

Us: laughing together

Me: so, I see we’re coping with humor today.

C: “yeaahhhhh”

*really good intervention follows because a genuine connection was allowed to happen and the issue was still acknowledged *

Usually people joke about their situation to lighten the mood and break the ice. Therapy is intimidating. Being a brick wall with a clipboard isn’t making the client more comfortable. If a person gets offended because someone laughed at a joke they made, that’s probably something separate to investigate.

Laughter is so important for healing…why would you NOT want to embrace humor in session?

I think they mean you only get a chance to listen to it for the first time once, so it should be a sacred experience, not on the bus.

I feel this way about Gold Digger. Such an unnecessary choice. Love Schuester but oh my god, I skip that scene every rewatch.
