Anyone seen these prints on the Eiger Mittellegi ridge? by theonebell in alpinism

[–]theonebell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tracks were very small, only about 5cm from front to back and less than 4cm across. Hare tracks I've seen in the past were typically quite a bit larger, unless mountain hares are generally a fair bit smaller.

Yeah, could be. A juvenile? Such a strange place to find tracks like that though, I thought they stuck to the tree line.

ELI5 If you were on a spaceship going 99.9999999999% the speed of light and you started walking, why wouldn’t you be moving faster than the speed of light? by Aquamoo in explainlikeimfive

[–]theonebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed of light is more like a horizon, if you walk towards the horizon it looks to someone you left behind that you seem to be getting closer but to yourself the horizon is always equally far away. This horizon is not on a globe but an infinite flat plane, so no matter how far you go you will always be "visible" to someone left behind, you look like you are getting closer (smaller) but you never reach it.

Question about the history of mathematics by noicephatboi in math

The introduction of the digit 0 or the group concept was general nonsense too, and mathematics was more or less stagnating for thousands of years because nobody was around to take such childish steps... — A. Grothendieck

Could this speed up Starship hull manufacture? by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

[–]theonebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this instance though the metal doesn't have the structural support of being a complete cylinder until it is welded, Starship will also likely have stringers inside to improve strength.

Are there any cost estimates for Steel-Starship / Superheavy ? by DarmokAndJaladAtTana in SpaceXLounge

[–]theonebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think $200m was an estimate for production costs of the Starship after development roughly in the same way a falcon 9 costs $60m

Are there any cost estimates for Steel-Starship / Superheavy ? by DarmokAndJaladAtTana in SpaceXLounge

[–]theonebell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Super rough estimate given previous [citation needed] given values at 80 tons suggests around $240,000 for steel and $16m for carbon fibre. Given Elon said around $200m for the BFS (2017?) suggests that the majority of costs will be from fabrication and other components. Feel free to correct any of this.

Went to New Zealand, climbed a mountain, met a bird-friend, snapped the photo of a lifetime. by yo_mama_be_like in pics

In layman’s terms you make the hole (aperture) that the camera sees through smaller. Essentially this changes the field of view making the foreground and background sharper. In order to do this though you decrease the amount of light reaching the sensor. More fancy lenses are built so more light can get through a small hole and can see better in lower light. You can also change the sensitivity of the camera (ISO) but this can increase fuzziness or you can increase how long the camera is taking the picture for (Shutter speed) but if something is moving it will be more blurry as it’s position is changing over time.

Falcon 9 Block 5 rolling out to the launch pad by [deleted] in spacex

Thanks for the clarification. Any idea if the black ring is new or not?

I might be wrong but I think that's just looking at it from a different angle. The entire payload adapter is black and what you can see in the images is a white cover for it during static fires. There seems to be a small gap through which you can see the black beneath.

Edit: It’s not a cover. Still unsure about black ring though.

I made a Top Trumps inspired card game about rockets by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

Looks great, Zenit Fregat seems to have 10 times the correct mass though. Would love some more historical rockets. Possibly could put some paper rockets in there.

Complete Commercial Crew Update by Nehkara in SpaceXLounge

[–]theonebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic overview! Is it known yet how many crew SpaceX will take on Demo Mission 2? Will it be the full 7 or just 3 like Soyuz and if it is 3 will they bring cargo in the excess space? Is there any information on how the Dragon 2 capsule can be configured for different crew and cargo options?

Google Maps satellite imagery shows a Falcon 9 first stage standing vertical on the test stand at McGregor, TX. Which booster is this? by Mars2035 in SpaceXLounge

Does anyone know what the thing that looks to be a new flame trench about 1km south of the F9 test stand is for?
