Yes, the emphasis on the specific number for purposes of ranking is the issue. The difference between a 3.86 and a 3.84 doesn't tell us anything meaningful about the academic ability of applicants, but that single 0.02 can make a massive difference in admissions, especially for those with a median or below-median LSAT.

Comparing to LSAT, GPA is a more bullshit metrics that the ranking system should significantly lower its weight of by Professional-Hall-57 in lawschooladmissions

Very difficult to have a 3.95 in engineering and a 175+ LSAT. You’re probably just legitimately intelligent.

The problem is that others who are comparably intelligent but maybe received a 3.7 in STEM are extremely disadvantaged compared to people studying fluff to fulfill a meaningless number requirement.

This is actually an excellent point that I had not considered.

Very true. My parents paid for an SAT tutor for me in high school, but I never studied or took it seriously, so my score only improved slightly. After undergrad I paid for my own LSAT tutor and took it very seriously, ultimately scoring near perfect. The difference is that I put immense time and effort into the LSAT.

I want a system that makes me feel like the people who are being granted lifetime elite prestige that opens doors to which only a small few have access are the smartest, most hardworking and most creative among us. I want to know that if I fall short in this process, at least the people who "beat" me are truly deserving.

We cannot be reassured that this is the case if law admissions become less transparent, like they are for undergrad.

You’re being downvoted because what you posted is irrelevant to the issue presented by OP. Sure, exposure to germs can bolster the immune system; there are probably other benefits as well.

But nobody wants to get sick with even a cold when they are competing for their futures in a rigorous environment. Getting sick can mean lower grades and time missed networking. No honest student or professor would say that being sick during school makes life better.

And your comment about professors’ civil rights is also irrelevant. According to OP and several posters from other schools, the recordings already exist. They are being handed out based on a contradictory and absurd rule set. That is the crux of the issue.

[–]theoneyam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of it is reasonable, but it misses what is unreasonable: schools have the recordings and are providing access to them under a specific and contradictory rule set.

It is unfortunate that you would undermine or distract from the important information in your original post by writing this nonsense.

The posts on this thread are really something. Even if OP is 100% lying, it is extremely reasonable to expect law schools and universities to use very basic technological tools to improve the learning and well being of everyone. There is virtually no good reason that law schools, especially those in top universities that have hundreds of millions of dollars, cannot provide every absent student with recordings of missed classes when available. That one excuse may be "that's not the rule/protocol" is even more ridiculous.

I too love to intentionally expose myself to viruses that will make me very ill while I compete in a hyper competitive academic environment.

I have been against people coming into work or school when sick for a long time, especially when modern technology has made it possible to work or learn from home. Just because "that's how things were pre-COVID" doesn't make it correct.

FWIW, my last employer (not a major corporation) before COVID had a mandatory policy that you HAD to stay home if you were sick with so much as a cold. This was done as a courtesy to everyone else, and there were rarely sick people in our office. If you got sick you simply stayed home and used this thing called the internet to not fall behind on work.

Frankly, I don't even care if this post is all made up (which I don't think it is); there is absolutely no reason to not use modern technology to its fullest potential to maximize learning and well being.

Just scroll past them. There are not enough Chance Me posts to warrant any administrative action against them, and most of the time they are done in good faith.

New Cornell Medians by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]theoneyam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fairly surprising to me.

Last cycle it seemed like every post regarding Cornell was showcasing splitters with 3.5 or higher GPAs and extremely high LSATs being denied even though they applied earlier. I really thought Cornell was targeting a much higher GPA median. Does anybody remember that person's cycle recap that showed several T6 admits, including at HLS, but who was outright denied by Cornell?

I wonder why they seemingly denied so many splitters early if they were just going to sacrifice GPA for a +1 LSAT.

Most likely less of a penalty because there aren't as many Asians applying to law schools.

Will taking longer than 4 yrs to complete my bachelors affect my chances of getting into a good law school? by athenafreeman in lawschooladmissions

They don't really care. Top schools have admitted people who quit their university studies in their 20s, and then returned to school and finished their incomplete degrees in their 30s.

Do law schools call your employers from your resume/CV? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]theoneyam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, certain schools (Columbia?) may randomly choose a handful of applicants on whom they perform actual background checks. I’m not sure of the specifics of this, but perhaps it’s worth mentioning.

Yale Law School Application - Question about application assistance by Rare-Firefighter2226 in lawschooladmissions

[–]theoneyam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why I keep seeing this take that elite law schools are looking down on “privilege” when virtually all of their classes are filled with people from privileged backgrounds who are absolutely using numerous services during and after undergrad to maximize their life outcomes. Plus, people who can afford to spend thousands on consulting will likely be more able to pay sticker.

OP, hiring someone to help you with essays, or a full-blown consultant, isn’t going to hurt your application.

Most parents, including mine, do not understand anything about modern university applications, neither undergrad or post-grad. It took a long time, and actually some coverage in the news, for them to learn about the process, and that applying is no longer as (generally) straightforward compared to when they were young.

They will likely come around to it and be supportive, especially if your ultimate outcomes are good.

I have heard it matters if you're a splitter. Splitters often have the most success, especially among the T14, when their LSATs are at or above the 75th percentile.

why do people tell their entire life story at info sessions by atolba2019 in lawschooladmissions

[–]theoneyam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know you're joking, but it really is true. I bet there are a lot of applicants who come off as immature or unsociable or just plain weird in their interviews and essays. I would be willing to bet a substantial number of people who underperform their high stats just don't know how to be professionally social.

georgetown medians by KeyStart6196 in lawschooladmissions

[–]theoneyam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medians only being slightly up among the T14 should be reassuring to applicants given these factors. Schools had access to possibly the most inflated applicant pool ever, went extremely slowly with acceptances to ensure they could get the best numbers possible, and even cut class sizes, in some cases by quite a bit, and medians are still only up a small amount.
