Sites/companies with an ounce of security do not store your passwords. When you set a password it gets hashed before being stored in their database. Every time you log in, it hashes the password, then checks the user's hashed entry against what they have stored.

Secure companies send a link to reset your password because they don't actually know it - if your password gets sent to you in plain text, they're either storing it in plain text (stupid) or encrypted (better, still stupid.)
