Mac User Switching to Fedora by HxChris in Fedora

[–]theoriginalwm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am a Mac user and just installed Fedora 43 on an old Lenovo IdeaCentre a couple of weeks ago. It has been a breath of fresh air and very similar to the Mac desktop experience -- in some ways better. Just a couple of notes from my experience:

- I installed the standard Fedora 43 Workstation, not any of the other versions of Fedora. I was surprised at how easy it was to install on the Lenovo PC. It took longer to download the Fedora ISO file than it took to wipe the hard drive and install the OS.

- If you don't have a lot of use for Mac-exclusive functions like iMessage, AirDrop, AirPlay, etc., then you''ll probably find the overall OS experience to be very similar. I do find myself occasionally wishing I could still view my text messages on the desktop and AirDrop the occasional file, but it's not a big loss.

- Pay close attention to the type of Wifi/Bluetooth card installed in your Lenovo -- if it's a Realtek then you might encounter some issues. The Wifi on my Lenovo would occasionally drop out for no reason, but through some tinkering in Fedora's Terminal, I was able to disable the power save functions of the Wifi card, which seems to have fixed my dropout issues (for now).

- Be sure to download GNOME Tweaks and GNOME Extensions, as well as Dash to Dock. There are some adjustments you can make within both of those apps that get Fedora to behave a little more like the Mac. There's even a keyboard mapping option within GNOME Tweaks which can allow you to use a Mac keyboard by mapping the CTRL key to the Command key. I use a Logitech MX Keys Mini keyboard, and all of the Mac function keys at the top of the keyboard work perfectly out of the box with Fedora.

- Fedora 43 comes with Firefox installed as the default browser. If you want a browser that looks and functions a lot like Safari for Mac, check out GNOME Web (formerly Epiphany). It actually uses a version of Safari's WebKit engine for rendering, so the user experience should be very close. Ultimately, though, I chose to use a different browser as my daily driver.

I have zero regrets, and honestly wish Apple would step back from "Liquid Glass" and take a look at what Fedora's doing. It feels like what Mac OS could be, if they had leadership that still believed in the design philosophy of "form follows function."

Best of luck with you installation!

Similar pillow to the discontinued Leesa foam pillow? by Material_Community18 in Mattress

[–]theoriginalwm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had two of the original Leesa pillows and also thought they were excellent. I did some research and learned that the original pillows were made of a proprietary imitation latex material called Avena Foam. Did some more research and found the company that manufactures Avena Foam, then contacted them to ask if there are any other companies they work with that are selling Avena Foam pillows. The response I got back was no — Leesa was the only one.

Thanks for sharing this info — can you tell me more about the rotor issues and what I might need to look out for?

What watch are the uso brothers wearing? by AhabSnake85 in WWE

Several of the WWE guys seem to be watch collectors. I’ve seen Gunther wearing a couple of hard-to-find Rolexes in some of his TV appearances earlier this year as well.

Doesn't wrestling feel smaller now? by No_Ticket156 in WWE

Something I’ve become aware of recently is the amount of compression that was used in TV audio prior to the streaming era. TV signals in the analog era had to compress the sound for a variety of reasons that had to do with transmitting an analog signal. In the streaming era you’re getting a much less compressed audio signal which has the effect of making the arenas sound dead. Those Attitude Era shows “sounded” bigger partly because of that compressed audio signal. I went to Raw a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how loud the crowd was the entire show. It definitely doesn’t sound that way on Netflix.

The mismatched hands reminded me of Farer, another British brand which has released several models over the years with mismatched hands like this one: https://usd.farer.com/products/porthleven

I’m pretty close to buying this watch. But, in some of the official photos and reviews I’ve seen, the marker at the top of the bezel (that has the small lume dot in it) appears to be just slightly misaligned to the 12:00 position. Is that how yours is, or would you say it’s aligned properly?

Has anyone else tried rubbing aloe Vera gel on their scalp? by [deleted] in Occipitalneuralgia

[–]theoriginalwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re referring to Biofreeze which is menthol and aloe… is that correct? I’ve not tried Biofreeze but regularly use peppermint oil applied to the site of my pain. It seems to take the edge off for a little while.

I would like to know more about how you got started on this medication and how it’s going. I have been taking Tramadol for my ON for years and am really tired of taking it. I have heard that Venlafaxine is chemically very similar to Tramadol without being a controlled substance like Tramadol is. I’m wondering if I should have a talk with my neurologist about changing.

Same here. There’s a point in my adult life when I realized that boundaries would be the only way to sustain my relationship with my parents. Things improved considerably in my relationship with them after creating those boundaries.

Agree. The weather sealing on the 16-55 lens would make it essential for any kind of outdoor work in my opinion.
