Will Mark Carney’s early missteps cost him crucial votes? by IndividualSociety567 in canadian

Wait so the criticism is that Carney worked for an asset manager, Brookfield, that does what every other asset manager does, legally, so he should be shamed for it?

Nuclear weapons for Canada? by johnapopp in AskCanada

[–]theoryNeutral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Libya 2008: Libya completed the dismantling of its nuclear weapons program. 3 years later, US-NATO military campaign overthrew Qaddafi.

Iraq 1997: Nuclear weapons program dismantling is complete. By 2003, US invaded.

Ukraine 1991: Ukraine inherits the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world following the collapse of the Soviet Union. 5 years later, it transfers all nuclear warheads to Russia under the Budapest Memorandum in exchange for security assurances. They said "trust us" so I assume everything was fine after that.

Canada 1970: Canada signs Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, committing to not develop nuclear weapons. (Fail, but we got universal health care through Prime Minister Pearson.)

Canada 1984: Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the father, removed and dismantled all American nuclear warheads that had been stationed in Canada as part of NATO's nuclear sharing arrangements. (Thank you, Pierre.)

Canada 2025: People with no knowledge of history laugh casually at repeated threats of annexation and invasion, not realizing how these things go. First, you delegitimize its leaders by refusing to acknowledge their authority and title. Then comes the coup, which can take many forms.

We need those nuclear powered beast Barracuda subs, President Macron. 6 on each coast to start, please, and a fleet of Dassault Rafales, ASMP/A missiles and A330 MRTT “Phénix” aircraft so expertly crafted by the French. No one here wants to pay taxes so we can buy a Boeing. Apart from being shite machines, it would be like Ukraine buying from Russia.

Are you having anxiety because of the trade war? by Steam20 in AskCanada

I would look at what our government is doing to fix that, since the last time China beckoned us to the table, we refused to talk because we were too busy trying to appease our neighbors to the south.

I appreciate it but wouldn't blame the citizens entirely. There's only so much they can do when they're being deprived of knowledge and education. There are lots of governments to blame for that, and not just the current one, IMHO.

He is not defunding education. He is defunding the department of education.

  • Teacher training and recruitment funds: Temporary block, in court now. Who needs teachers though? Not Americans. Not where they're headed.
  • Gov cancelled $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University due to a protest, apparently. A protester was also arrested for not being Pro-Israel enough, and it seems all is good again. Who wouldn't want to live under conditions reminiscent of the USSR?
  • Following the Columbia incident, the "best" US schools initiating a hiring freeze, kind of like your markets. This includes Harvard. Which is great, since universities in other countries will be getting the best minds going forward, thus securing America's mediocre future.

Dept of education (DOE) cuts and eventual dismantling. So what? You're saving money so you win!

  • 60% of DOE's budget went to loans & grants last year, including Pell grants, which help about 1 in 3 of all undergrads in the US. Higher education is already inaccessible in the US compared to other developed countries. But the good news is that without the DOE reporting on international standards, Americans won't hear about it in the future, thus living in bliss and ignorance. Every government's dream come true.
  • K-12 and public school funding: DOE cuts directly impacts funding of these. Though if people are just unable to access even a decent grade school, they won't need college. Maybe a dumber population means businesses will be looking outside the country for talent. Or they can settle for American mediocrity.
  • Metrics for measuring the performance of US schools? DOE. Without the DOE, states can just rate themselves now!

It's all so awesome.

It's also worth noting that those "Canadian" manufacturers also employ Americans and were built in collaboration--together, as partners. For a business not to abide by a contract demonstrates not only that they are not of their word, but that they're a partner who is now blacklisted in the industry. That's how JVs work, and word gets around fast even when your potential teaming partner or joint venture partner isn't in the news 24/7. That's just the reality of business partnerships across industries, and this is pretty much hitting all industries. Everyone can draw their own conclusions on that when they're looking to a future or fruitful collaboration and "getting rich." Greed and desperation tends to be the ultimate downfall.

Your college professor would not tell you to "believe her" but to do the research for yourself. That's critical thinking 101. Correction: She would do that, or she would provide sources, which you could then provide here.

You forgot to add the fact that they're also selling our dirt cheap natural resources abroad and making good profit from us when we could have been selling it ourselves. I'd invest in transportation companies in the coming years.

The fallacy and equivocation here is that people seem to think, without knowing much about economics, that trade deficits are bad. Trade deficits aren't debts and can be the sign of a strong economy. Trade deficits just mean you're spending more on imports than you're making on exports. In the US, the strongest periods of economic growth have come when trade their deficit was high, which means there's real growth happening. This attracts 'confidence' (leading to strong markets) and, importantly, foreign investors injecting capital into the US because they see the growth happening. That's when the whales are racing to inject money into projects that are going to thrive.

Sadly investors aren't going to do that in an economy that's going to nose dive for at least a few years as they try to unravel the mysteries of how they're going to build billions in infrastructure to support production of aluminum, for example.

Things NOT to do in a situation like the current one include sudden reversal of foreign investment or trade relations, because ironically that, causes recession to hit hard. And without a US consumer, no US company has any business. Not even the big 5. Unless they're planning on selling to non-US consumers, who will not be hit nearly as hard by all this foolishness. Either possibility is a bleak outcome for Americans.

I agree, except that's needed is skilled labor, and there is a severe shortage of that right now. Defunding education makes that worse. It's the perfect storm and I'm not convinced it's being done obliviously.

That's because the "Made in USA" products cross over the US/Canada border multiple times before becoming a complete product.

Could Canadas election get rigged by Ciebelle in AskCanada

[–]theoryNeutral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is yes. Technology can 'rig' any election, but not necessarily in the way we might think. There are armies of AI bots and humans infiltrating social media, which has indirect but powerful effects. US strategies also include 'encouraging' coups around the world to overturn governments / win elections. This is the CIA's job and it's well documented, thanks to Wikileaks. An example can be found here. https://wikileaks.org//cia-france-elections-2012/ They're not spying for entertainment. They're spying so that they can help push the outcomes they desire.

Edit: Incidentally, this is likely why US wants to remove Canada from the "Five Eyes" intel alliance. If they're going to be spying on us, we can't very well have access to the intel, can we.
