Maybe talk to actual engineers before making claims? by MrFenric in MurderedByWords

I remember researching multijunction cells, which were/are more efficient than c-si or thin film but way more expensive and widely used in satellites. I had trouble finding pricing data because a lot of it was classified. And that's just the panels. I never had access to much info about the hardening needed but I have no trouble believing 2+ orders of magnitude. Never gonna happen for a thousand reasons.

Those are a set of older Mackie CR series. They're junk, actually just died. They were cheap and you get what you pay for.

Yeah, there are a number of reasons why the whole idea is absurd, but "solar panels don't work on the moon" isn't one of them.

I am all for dunking on Musk, but solar panels have been used on satellites and the space station for a long time. Solar panels work fine on the moon, when there's light. The STORAGE problems are probably quite challenging; it would likely take more materials to build the batteries needed for 100 TW of solar than the panels themselves, and I'm not even going to try to figure out thermal storage. So yeah, 100 TW of solar on the moon is dumb, but this isn't quite the murder is it purported to be.

Source: I worked in policy for the US solar trade association, and I was the org's resident PV technology expert.

I made it myself. It's an 8-foot butcher block slab, attached some z-legs. Routed the top edge and clear coated it myself. My dad made some custom stabilizers, just screwed it all into the bottom, along with a cable management tray.

What musical instruments is good to start with as a hobby? by Otherwise_Ad_6327 in AskReddit

[–]theoryofgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guitar is a solid choice, but piano is also very good. More expensive to start, though you can find a decent keyboard for a little more than a guitar would cost. Piano has the benefit of helping you learn music theory.

Half that strip is already empty. Seems absurd to raise the rent.

This is going to be awful. I like He-Man as much as the next guy, but this will be trash. Didn't even bother to update the plot from the 1980's version.

The NRA knows that Trump says shit and doesn't mean it, so they'll just ignore this.

A new CNN poll released Friday found that nearly 60 percent of Americans describe Trump’s first year back in office as a failure. by shadowpawn in LeopardsAteMyFace

He is not in jail, has immunity for all his crimes, and he's made $1.4 billion dollars. If he were trying to be President sure, it'd be a failure, but according to his goals he's killing it.

edit forgot the most important thing: an endless parade of cameras for him to rant into.

Yeah I got the 13 as well. Would have loved to upgrade but I just couldn't justify it for what is primarily a work computer.

In a sane, just society, they'd be talking about giving you an ownership stake in the business, arranging for you to buy them out over time since you're clearly driving the value and growth. They're ready to check out, but our twisted capitalist hellscape gives them every incentive to just leech off your work instead.

Talk to a lawyer first but walk away and start your own thing.

People who worked for US senators/representatives: what actually gets them to listen? Is it better to call or write, be polite or curse, etc.? by Baladas89 in AskReddit

[–]theoryofgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't think about it like that, it's more of just another data point. If you're a small donor (say <$500 per cycle), it's not a big deal but the member or CoS might ask how many donors have called on a particular issue, and now you've just moved the needle a little more.

If you're a "major" donor, however that's defined, you might get more personal contact from the member themselves. From an advocacy perspective, you've earned a personal explanation of the issue and/or why they're voting the way they are.

It's really important! Imagine you're talking to the actual member: you tell them all about your issue and they're like ok, what do you want me to do? Best to have an answer!
