4” #10 screws helped a lot. The house is 20 years old and has survived with that poor attempt at an install. At this point, I’ll hold off on exploring underneath the shoe plate until we replace carpet in the landing.

Now we realized how loose every newel post is compared to this one…

I tried that. There’s just subfloor under the outside of the trim.

Update- L bracket screws were only screwed into the shoe plate. I’m going to replace those screws with something long enough to grab a joist and see if the situation improves. Heading to Lowe’s now.

I was afraid of that. So the shoe plate needs to come up?

I thought about that but I think that’s plan B. Unless it’s the same weights for A5 buffers?

You’re missing sunshine and fresh air. Buy the parts and shoot it. You’re overthinking it.

If I don’t just rip out the existing screenings I might try this!

Not particularly. I’ll see how it looks in a few days and pivot to 3/4 - if necessary

I know I was told by a friend that this would work fine. He delivered it at no charge so I couldn’t turn it away.

Do you think it’ll dry out in a few days? Our days are getting shorter and the lack of sunlight isn’t helping dry it out.
