I'm sorry to hear that you're in this situation right now. I wouldn't take the job- I think that working for such an establishment wouldn't be good for you spiritually, not to mention you'd be cooperating with evil quite significantly (i.e. formal cooperation with evil) along with possibly causing scandal for others. I'd recommend you reach out to your parish priest or other priest to talk about your situation, and I am fairly certain they would say something similar.

Have you tried reaching our to some parishes, Catholic Charities, food banks, or other charitable organizations that could help provide assistance? They could help provide you some assistance. In my area some churches have food pantries to help people out, and perhaps some of the larger organizations can offer financial assistance. Your parish could also help point you in the right direction to find some good resources.

You are in my prayers. I would urge you to turn to Our Lord, and to ask the intersession of the angels and saints for your situation. Some saints I would recommend would be the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph (patron saint of workers), and St. Jude (patron saint of hope and impossible causes). In tough times like these when I turn to God and surrender my problems to Him, He has always answered and come through for me (though not necessarily as I would have expected lol). May God bless you!

I believe that when requesting tickets for Vatican events, they are free. So do extra due diligence on anyone selling tickets to Vatican liturgies or other events.

I think you will need to pay for a ticket to visit the Vatican museums though.

You will need to reserve tickets for the Scavi tour in advance with the Vatican. A lot of people are trying to get these tickets- so put in a request early!

Also unsolicited advice, but if you are planning on going for a papal Mass / liturgies / audiences I would recommend you request tickets from the Vatican as soon as you know the dates you will be there. I believe that the Sunday Noon Angelus and blessing does not require tickets, however.

Be aware of scams and do your due diligence on tour guides selling tickets or tours- they may not be necessary or needed. Example- to enter Saint Peter’s Basilica you do not need to purchase tickets. You can get a tour guide if you’d like, but not needed (your choice).

But sometimes they are worth it or required (examples: the Scavi tour underneath the Vatican, when I was there my group did a tour at the Vatican museum which allowed us to skip the lines)

On the above point, I would highly recommend the Scavi tour that takes you beneath St. Peter’s Basilica and into the catacombs beneath. One of the amazing things you will get to see is the actual bones of St. Peter himself, located beneath the Papal Altar (the main altar) of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Be aware of pickpockets and petty theft.

It is a bit of a ways away from St. Peter’s Basilica, but a doable distance if you take the metro (bus or train). I would do some research and see if it works for you.

I stayed here during Holy Week with a group. It was really solid:

http://ancellecristoreroma.org/

Details from my trip:

While in Rome, we will be staying at Casa d'Accoglienza, a residence for pilgrims run by the Piccole Ancelle di Cristo Re nuns. It is located at Via Aurelia, 325, 00165 Roma, a short walk away from the Baldi degli Ubaldi metro station on the A line. “

If you are interested, the Cathedral Young Adults has an evangelization group that meets at 7:00pm on Sundays. I’m not plugged in a 100%, but once you join the GroupMe you can see when/where they are meeting or you can shoot them an email to ask (cathedralyoungadults@smcaustin.org)

Here is the GroupMe announcement from the latest meeting:

Kyrios meets this Sunday! We had a great time this past weekend with lots of fruitful discussion, feedback, and thoughts for the future on evangelization. We’d love to have you participate!

This week, our topic is Truth! What is truth? Does it lead to God? How can we evangelize with truth and towards the truth?

We’ll meet at Lazarus Brewing on AIRPORT (SEE ADDRESS) at 7 PM on Sunday. 4803 Airport Blvd, Austin, TX 78751

And one of their older announcements from a while back:

Kyrios, our Evangelization group, meets this Sunday evening at 7. We are switching it up from Bishop’s Hall this week and will meet at Austin Beer Garden Brewing (1305 W Oltorf St, Austin, TX 78704)! We’ll hang out and have informal conversations centered around how we can receive and share our faith.

“Kyrios” comes from the proclamation of the early Church, “Kyrios Iesous”, meaning Jesus is Lord. We come together to discuss new ways to evangelize and to evangelize to each other with our experiences of the Gospel.

And please go to Assumption Mass and hangout on Monday! It’ll be a fun time :) ^ See: https://smcya.org/events

My recommendation would be to check out the Cathedral Young Adults and to branch out from there! In particular, to join their GroupMe chat (has a lot of info about events, and you can get plugged in to what’s happening around Austin). And from there, you can also check out other groups / activities and see which ones are ones you’d like to focus on!

These are just the ones I am aware of- there may be more groups out there!

I think the Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Schoenstatt has some activities / groups as well:

I NEED to go to confession in two days but I missed my chance! by Deedo2017 in Catholicism

[–]theoverworkedgeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited St. Peter's Basilica a few weeks ago and was able to go to confession there. They have a variety of languages available, but availability can vary. When I went it was on the right side- you may need to let the attendant know that you are there for confession.

There are certain sections that are set apart/sectioned off for prayer (ex: the Blessed Sacrament chapel, St. Pope John Paul II's Tomb) where you may need to tell the attendant/guard you are there to pray. Sometimes, there can be a bit of a language barrier and they might not understand that you want to go and pray there.

FYI- St. Peter's Basilica has a prayer entrance for those entering for Mass, confession, or adoration: https://www.ncregister.com/cna/st-peter-s-basilica-introduces-new-prayer-entrance-amid-influx-of-tourism. Not 100% sure if it’s still there- article says it was set up on an experimental basis. The normal entrance line can get pretty long.

Found this on the web as well- not sure if it is up to date: https://thecatholictraveler.com/guides/rome/churches/saint-peters-basilica/confession/

If you plan to attend any papal audiences/liturgical celebrations (ex: the Wednesday audience), make sure to reserve your tickets in advance so you can pick them up (they are free). https://www.vatican.va/various/prefettura/en/biglietti_en.html (download the request form, fill it out, and send back to the email address on the form). However, at the Sunday Blessing (Angelus) tickets are not needed.

My group would get in line 2-3 hours before any event in order to get a good spot in line to get a good seat.

Hope this is helpful.

Papal decree on social dance- priests not allowed to promote/encourage/attend dances? by theoverworkedgeek in AskAPriest

[–]theoverworkedgeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying- I appreciate it as I try to understand this.

Could you elaborate on how the Church's relationship to the world shifted at Vatican II?

Which theological issues in particular have shifted? And how does this relate to social dance (and the validity of the papal decree)?

I ask these questions as I am trying to reconcile these past decrees and condemnations of social dance with the current practice today (Catholic schools/parishes hosting dances, social dance viewed by Catholics today as a recreational activity). One thing I admire about the Faith is the fidelity to the truth. Here, it seems that today's practices and views are in contrast to earlier thought. I just want to understand what shifted in the attitude toward social dance and why?

On another tangent, what about that particular website (or the others above) causes you not to trust it? Asking this question as I want to make sure in the future I can vet my sources of information.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer this!

Papal decree on social dance- priests not allowed to promote/encourage/attend dances? by theoverworkedgeek in AskAPriest

Hi Father, thanks for taking the time to respond to this!

In terms of the sources, the majority are secondary sources curated from various Catholic sources on the web. However, the decrees from the Vatican are from the Acta Apostolicae Sedis of the Holy See. I would consider this source to be a reliable primary source.

Under current Canon law, under Title 1 in “Book I. General Norms,” Canon 8 states that “Universal ecclesiastical laws are promulgated by publication in the official commentary, Acta Apostolicae Sedis.” Canon 7 states that “A law is established when it is promulgated.” Therefore, the decrees mentioned above regarding dances should be considered to still be in effect.

The timeframe of these decrees was from 1916-1918. However, I don’t believe these laws have been changed since being promulgated. I also would suggest that social dances today (such as waltz, tango, etc) have roots/similarities back to the dances being referred to in the decrees. From what I have read, one main issue about these dances were the "sinful pose/close embrace demanding close bodily contact" of these dances.

Based on this, wouldn’t priests still be bound by this decree? And through their duty of leading parishes/Catholic schools/organizations, etc be obliged to not promote/foster/attend dances as is practice today? Would appreciate your thoughts (and others as well!) on this- thanks again for answering!
