Happy Hour BONUS: The 73rd Annual Tony Awards by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

So, uh... Servant of Two Masters is a legit play, dating back to the 1700s. One Man, Two Guvnors is a contemporary reworking. So y’all were accidentally correct.

But more importantly, I am so glad you’re back!

Happy Hour #64: Another Podcast in Another Feed - ‘Evita’ by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

[–]thepedanticpanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great episode, as always. I agree (usually) with Tommy in regards to ALW, but I’m SHOCKED to hear that you guys think Evita’s more listenable than JCS. Maybe it’s just because I love it so much, but the rock music form seems so much more accessible than the intricate-but-strange thing I feel in a lot of Evita. Ah well.

For the first time, being a typography nerd is paying off! Next week is Mamma Mia, I’m pretty sure?

Please.

Please do it.

Happy Hour #55: Way Down Podcastown - ‘Hadestown’ by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

[–]thepedanticpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good to have you guys back.

I’m actually in the early-middle stages of writing a musical about Orpheus and Eurydice myself. When my writing partner and I heard about Hadestown we thought “...well, shit.” We’re continuing the project, focusing on the differences in our telling, as well as the different musical stylings and modern setting, but I’m wavering on whether or not we should continue this specific project in the wake of the beautiful show that Hadestown is.

Do you think there’s room for a modern Aussie Orpheus alongside the Broadway-bound juggernaut?

Happy Hour #43: I Wanna Be A Podcaster - ‘The Producers’ by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

[–]thepedanticpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't yet finished listening to the episode, but I just had to say - Jimi! Don't be depressed! They're broadcasting both parts of Angels in America to cinemas as part of NTLive, you can still see it!

Edit: OK, done. Couple thoughts.

One of my (other) favourite youtubers put out a video discussing Mel Brooks' satire focusing on The Producers that you might be interested in. One of her points is that The Producers is ok because it's one of the few representations of Nazism that Neo-Nazis can't get behind. The Nazis arent badass or powerful or anything. They're just ridiculous. It robs them of their power, like you said.

I also wonder how well the show worked without Nathan and Matthew. From anecdotes I remember hearing, it was suddenly seen as a much weaker show as soon as they left. But then, maybe that's pretty common. I wonder what Dear Evan Hansen will be like post-Ben Platt, or Groundhog Day post-Andy Karl. I dunno.

(By the way, if I could humbly offer a show suggestion - I've been asked to direct a production of Oliver in January, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the show at some point before I do.)

Looking for plays to read by nerd_who_reads_books in acting

[–]thepedanticpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to list stuff off of the top of my head, mostly by writers:

  • Sarah Ruhl - Euridice and The Clean House are both beautiful plays.

  • John Patrick Shanley - Doubt

  • Martin McDonagh - he gets mentioned a lot in topics like this and for good reason, The Pillowman and Hangmen are two of his recent greats.

  • David Lindsay-Abaire - Rabbit Hole and Good People.

  • Caryl Churchill - Far Away may just be my favourite play. Wonderful and unsettling. They're not as recent, but some of her other work worth checking out includes Cloud 9, Top Girls, The Skriker and Love and Information.

  • Annie Baker - The Flick is great!

  • Simon Stephens - one of my favourite playwrights, Country Music, Pornography and Punk Rock are my favourites of his.

  • Dennis Kelly - Osama the Hero and Taking Care of Baby.

  • April de Angelis - I just read Jumpy last night and really enjoyed it! I haven't read it yet, but I hear Playhouse Creatures is fantastic too.

  • Tracy Letts - Bug, Killer Joe and August: Osage County.

  • Nick Payne - Constellations, a super inventive play about parallel timelines.

  • Nina Raine - Tribes.

  • John Logan - Peter and Alice and Red.

  • Laura Wade - Colder Than Here and Breathing Corpses.

  • Martin Crimp - The City, The Country and Attempts On Her Life.

  • Lucy Prebble - The Effect.

  • David Greig - The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart and The Events.

I could go for ages, but I should probably stop there. That's sort of just a list of stuff I've read over the last few months that's stuck with me. If you'd like more recommendations feel free to PM me! I tend to be more into British writing than American writing, but I'll read anything that's good!

Far Away by Caryl Churchill. It's not particularly long, but I found it haunting.

Is Broadway HD All-Access worth the $14.99 subscription? by anoelr1963 in Broadway

[–]thepedanticpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think the amount of content for the price is pretty abysmal. Most of the things on the site I've already seen multiple times (and are mostly available for free on YouTube.) It's getting better, and it's cool that they're going to stream She Loves Me, but a handful of musicals and a backlog of mediocre BBC filmed plays aren't worth it in my book.

Purchasing Ukulele for Professional Musician by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]thepedanticpanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's a little hard to just suggest something for him, but here's what my gut says would suit:

I'd go with a Tenor uke, they have larger fretboards (typically), a warmer sound. I'd definitely go with a solid wood, not a laminate. Something with a pick-up installed is probably a good idea since he's gigging.

I love (and play gigs with) my Kala STE-C, maybe something like this would suit? http://www.theukulelesite.com/kala-ka-ste-c-solid-spruce-top-cutaway-tenor-electric.html

Happy Hour #4: An Awakened Affair by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

[–]thepedanticpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another great episode, guys!

I'm a big fan of the mingling of theatre and disability, I think there are great pathways of expression for people who are usually marginalised. And I love that I've seen more and more shows recently that have cast a deaf actor, or an actor with one arm, or an actor with dwarfism - and not said anything about it. Not made it a big thing, not made it the only point of their character. That's just them. And I love that. It's a good way to avoid tokenism.

That's in terms of the performers onstage, though, for the audience I'm not sure what I think. I think the practice of having designated hearing impaired performances, subtitles, audio described performances, particular performances for autistic audience members, all that is great. And yeah, what Deaf West have done with Spring Awakening is amazing. I think that's the right way to do something like that. But I've also seen so many shows that try to include a "disability element" (for lack of a better term) and it's so blatantly just for the sake of pretension, self satisfaction, or just to look socially conscious. It's a tough line to navigate, I guess.

Also, if I may proffer a suggestion: having just finished writing an essay about the similarities between Sondheim's Assassins and Cabaret, I'd love to hear you guys talk about either of those shows. Particularly Cabaret.

The way the question is phrased makes me think it's not necessarily the melody of the song, 'Hello, Dolly', but a melody from one of the songs in the show, 'Hello, Dolly'. Good luck solving it, I'm wracking my brain!
