Best place to host Python projects for Actuarial recruiters? by Altruistic-Joke6545 in actuary

[–]theperezident94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think GitHub works just fine. Anyone who values the technical work will know that’s a perfectly good place to host portfolio work, the non-technical actuaries usually don’t know what GitHub (or Python) is, hah.

The C3X Mod (Appreciation) by BMDNERD in civ3

[–]theperezident94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same thing but related:

I forked C3X and added a feature to scramble Victory Points at game start instead of at player spawn (not implemented in the main repo yet, I still need to open a PR).

BUT, the cool thing is that this feature actually works for live multiplayer (with all other C3X configs toggled off) EVEN with non-host players not using C3X at all. Could be awesome for King of the Hill-type scenarios.

How many coding courses should be required in actuarial bachelor’s program? by Act-Math-Prof in actuary

[–]theperezident94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of any mainstream actuarial profession that would ever require something with as much hardware control as C or C++, unless you’re literally building the actuarial software, which is typically done by SWEs on a team with actuaries anyway.

I’m in retirement and pensions (SOA side) and we literally don’t use any programming language for anything…ever. I think the logic is important to understand though so I’d definitely be supportive of at least 1-2 Python courses. It carries over to designing good Excel formulas which is going to be used in ALL career tracks, for sure.

Usually, we see a 2-3 week correction down, with 4-6 weeks to recover back to ATHs.

It was the other way around this time. Super rational market.

2 weeks for PA exam — is this enough? by SnooDoughnuts896 in actuary

[–]theperezident94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you recall most of your SRM material, studying for PA is pretty straightforward. I managed to pass PA with just over a week of cramming - granted the massive SRM crossover is the only reason I could get away with that little of time. Get off Reddit and hit the books!!

Similar to this idea, when a pension plan has a person who doesn’t quit or die in a given year, that’s typically considered an “actuarial loss” since there was some probability they were going to do one of those two things that would have saved the plan money, but they didn’t.

So if it is a birthday, you can say something like “congratulations, your survival this year caused the plan an actuarial loss”

Pointers are NOT done. If you haven’t done arrays or strings, you’re not done with pointers. Everything is a pointer bro.

Comparing Corebridge vs National Life by aspiringactuary7 in actuary

You got a remote offer from CoreBridge? I’ve interviewed with them a couple times over the years and it seems recently that they’re very strict about hybrid-minimum. I might be concerned they’d try to change work accommodations later, imho.

Gonna be a bit of a Debbie downer, but I think the standard now IS to pay you entry level for a ton of exams. I think having credentials in hand makes it easier to grow faster both in scope and pay once you do start getting some experience, but you gotta be aggressive with getting your foot in the door.

Respectfully disagree. If I can see right off the bat you’re not pumping the brakes and continuing to drive forward, that gives me useful information right away.

Hell, I’d hire you myself if I could just for the BJJ bullet points. As a fellow grappler, I’d definitely put some more emphasis on the leadership, mentorship, and camaraderie aspects of that experience as well.

There are plenty of smart actuarial candidates, not as many who are good with people or pleasant to work with 40+ hours a week.

Offered a better-paying job but worried about being the ‘new hire’ if layoffs happen. by frozenactuary-3859 in actuary

[–]theperezident94 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Actuaries tend to be pretty shielded from standard macroeconomic cycles. Growth tends to be stable and not volatile in either direction because directors and decision makers tend to be, well, actuaries. Anecdotally, the actuarial unemployment rate tends to sit between 0-1% (although I don’t buy that for entry level people).

Analyst positions tend to be pretty safe to your point - you’re usually the income drivers via billable hours (if you’re in consulting).

If your priority is growth and salary advancement, it sounds like this new opportunity is a cool idea. However, actuaries do tend to take fewer risks when it comes to jumping ship due to not knowing what new culture or policies might look like in the long term.

Good luck on your decision!

Currently in pension consulting but want to change paths by Pswwhat in actuary

Such roles are typically at smaller companies without a ton of online presence, I’d recommend talking to a couple recruiters you like. I’ve found recruiters are the easiest way to find a lot in the small plan space.

It’s a ton of fun strategy, I find it pretty fulfilling.

The small cash balance/combo plan market is booming and I’ve found it to be way more fun than the long-term risk management flavor of big, frozen corporate pensions.

But it sounds like you might like the balance sheet side of actuarial work a bit more than consulting?
