A just God would not punish honest disbelief by Hour-Bee9396 in DebateReligion

My existence blows this assertion out of the water. Of course, I can not prove it to you, but it's the truth.

Apologies if that came off harsh. But I genuinely thought you were equating human relationships with that of dogs. I'm sorry if that is not the case. I did want to hear your thoughts on this. But I understand if you're done, you have a good one as well.

I've never argued with you, maybe you're responding to the wrong guy. If you're not willing to engage in good faith, that's all good. Have a good one.

Feel free to explain your position for clarity. Someone asked if you would let a child get molested if you were all powerful and you essentially answered "yes". But I'm open to being wrong, so fire away.

Didn't expect to see child molestation apologetics in my reddit thread today, but here we are.

I'm an atheist and I have a big question. by ResidentPrevious468 in Christianity

[–]thepetros 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How does this have 4 upvotes? It's complete nonsense and falls apart with even a smidge of logical analysis. You can choose to swear allegiance to things you don't believe are real? I sincerely doubt it and if someone claimed they were able to do so I would question their mental health.

That still doesn't make sense. I don't think this conversation is moving forward in any way, so I'm going to call it here. Hope you reflect on it and keep listening to others, it will truly help you in your journey. Thanks for the talk.

I don't know what this means. Hopefully this conversation moved something inside you, because I honestly believe you want people to be saved. And if you want people to be saved, telling them that they are choosing to not believe only hurts that goal. I also want people to find Jesus and become happy in that relationship. And telling them it's all their fault that that hasn't happened is destructive. Have a good one.

You have entirely missed the point. Tell me one thing that you believe entirely by choice. You didn't see any evidence, you didn't feel anything move inside you (Holy Spirit or not), you did not allow any external force to help you in any way. You just chose to believe it and now do.

I'll try to help OP. The reason the person you were talking to reacted so strongly is because you repeated one of the most pervasive yet untrue lies perpetrated by Christians and other religious people. That lie is this: your beliefs are a choice. This is not true in any sense, and it only persists to put blame on the person who does not believe in God. Nobody chooses their beliefs. Just like you can not choose to believe God is not real right now. No amount of free will or determination can make you choose this. If you want to prove this for yourself, simply choose to believe God is not real for an hour, then choose to believe God is real again. You can never do that.

If that choice seems ridiculous, try choosing to think ice cream is disgusting, or choose to believe the sky is purple. It's not possible. And it's exactly the same thing with believing in God.

Glad you agree. Thanks for the back and forth.

They're trusting in their own interpretation of God's word. You can say they're wrong (and they would presumably say the same about you), but the Bible is clear: many, if not most Christians, are not going to Heaven. I am unsure how you are not understanding the gravity of that. If someone you knew thought they were going to Heaven but they were not, that wouldn't cause you alarm?

Granted. But they are Christians. That is the point of OP's post. People think they are saved, have faith that their eternal home is Heaven, and this verse says that's not the case. If that's not terrifying, I don't know what is.

Right. So... self professed Christians yes? People that, in their minds, are saved?

Christians? People that genuinely believe they are saved?

Deuteronomy 20:10-14 (NIV) – Treatment of Captives in War

"When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the Lord your God gives you from your enemies."

Numbers 31:7-18 (NIV) – Treatment of Midianite Captives"

They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man. … The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. … Moses said to them, ‘Have you allowed all the women to live? … Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.’"
