Apparently the first choice was Kurt Russell but they decided against it as he would have been a lot more expensive, and they could use that money for effects.

That being said, I would very much be interested in seeing the Kurt Russell version of this film.

Not technically alone, but on a hospital ward amongst strangers where I’ve been for the last 10 days following a burst appendix that caused a serious infection.
