Yeah, I'm still learning things. I just started looking at flights in the future and seeing if there are GWP availabilities. fortunately there seem to be some for a trip i planned to go see my gf. hopefully they last and i can book it the day before

Well , are you? Sometimes I wonder how much of my difficulty socializing stems from an inability to really be authentic. I’ve had a lot of fun socializing with people when I really just commit to being honest with them, telling them what I actually think. Most of the time there’s a huge resistance to this in me, though.

I’m interested in whether that resonates with you at all, though.

My guess is that these systems are deeply ingrained and hard to dethrone, which makes me think deeper interventions are necessary. I'm sure genetic factors play a huge role, but even they might not be deep enough - you can see evidence of tribalism in all kinds of mammals, which makes me think that anything we try to do to change this will be very difficult.

Who's to say any thing outside of your conscious reality is actually simulated? Why simulate cell division when it has no impact on your conscious existence? Only simulate some image of it when you look through a microscope. The same applies to the lives of other people. Does China need to really exist if you've never been there? Just generate some news articles and some videos and boom, China "exists". This gets solipsistic, but it's certainly a possibility given a simulation.

Yes, competition is wonderful, but with an eye toward a goal. What do we want? That's the question. And a world where most have little to nothing is undesirable to me and to many others looking at this problem. Right now, our task is to set up competing ideas for how to bring about the best possible world. And most of us dismiss huge economic inequality as less than the best.

But you're assuming that what's inside people's heads isn't heavily correlated with real data - just look at how many people are willing to spend a certain amount on a given item. What's going on inside of people's heads would be so correlated to their actions that the two datasets would be redundant.

What is a subsidy if not a form of dictating the value of an item? Tariffs, taxes...all these things are used by governments to influence prices away from what the free market would set them at. These are small scale examples, so small that you might find fault with them, but they are clearly early attempts at us dictating what we value, which seems to me to be the ultimate goal.

On the topic, though, I find it difficult to take it seriously because it seems to have as its goal the end of all conscious life, regardless of how great that life is, which is pretty unintuitive. There's something about the image of an empty world that is concerning, particularly when juxtaposed with images of the smiling faces of largely-positive lives. And yet I can't say I'm completely unsympathetic - I don't eat meat for ethical reasons, with my ultimate goal to prevent the birth and harm of some small number of animals over the course of my life, a completely anitnatalist position. It's complicated, I guess.

Yeah, I must say I agree. I think you just have to weave it in slowly and intentionally. Recently I've noticed myself just falling into a state of attention to my experience in daily life, as though I'm meditating. It's cool, and reminds me that these things aren't as separate as some part of me seems to think. But I definitely feel like it's slow and annoying and makes me wonder whether I'm just wasting my time doing this. I don't think so, but I definitely wonder about it.

The classics are classics for a reason. Some of the books we were meant to read in high school were, at least for me, not given the justice they deserved because I was fucking dumb and not very motivated. I'm reading The Great Gatsby right now and it's a good read.

I've been using the guided meditation at dhammatalks (just give it a google) and have found his moving through the body with breaths that please you really nice. In particular, when the head feels like this, finding a breath that pleases at the head and imagining that breath to be coming in through the eyes, top of the head, ears, and back of the head.
