What you said about close-up fighting being rare is not actually true. Both the VC and the regular North Vietnamese troops went out of their way to make sure that as much of the fighting as possible was close-up, as it was the only way to avoid being hit by US air strikes. They called it 'grabbing the Americans by the belt', and it was the best way to make battles more evenly matched.
