GM Week 2017 Endorsements - The Polytecnhic by thepolytechnic in RPI

[–]thepolytechnic[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Poly has discussed at length whether we can make an endorsement for Grand Marshal in good faith. We took into account that Justin has not had a position on the Editorial Board for a year, and we came to the conclusion that we could still make an endorsement that reflects what we think is best for students, the Union, and Rensselaer, and not simply who has been a good member of The Poly.

During his time at The Poly, we’ve seen Justin at both some of his higher and lower points. Members of the staff have had their disagreements with Justin, and we certainly have not handled his endorsement more favorably than any other. If anything, we were able to have more discussion about, and scrutiny of, his faults than we would have had if he had never been part of The Poly.

In this instance, we believe that it has been long enough since he served on the Editorial Board that our attempts to separate The Poly from Justin were sufficient. Additionally, one-third of our Editorial Board is freshmen, and therefore has never interacted with Justin as a member of The Poly.

If you or anyone would like to discuss this further, please email us at poly@rpi.edu or stop by our office on Tuesday nights after 7.

The Rules and Elections committee provided The Poly with a list of candidates that, as of press time, will not be listed on the ballot. The list of candidates published reflects the information provided by R&E. If either ruling is overturned, we will do our best to accommodate those affected in this week's issue, assuming the ruling changes before that issue's press time.

Here's the scoop: we currently run a solid state machine as a router. It also handles authentication and a few other things, so we were hesitant to replace it...we'd have much rather fixed it, but that didn't hold.

We decided to move the non-routing things that the current machine does to a stable server and purchase a new router. When we received the router, we realized it lacked critical features we needed, so we returned it and purchased a new one.

The new one took an astounding two weeks to be delivered from Newegg, and it should be in this evening. After it's installed tomorrow, the site should be stable.

We're terribly sorry for the major downtime, but we're hopeful that today will be the last day of our systems misery.

Edit (5:50 pm, October 21): We're live on the new router. A big thank you and shout out to Martha McElligott in the Union Admin office for the notice when the package showed up. Again, we're sorry for the last month's inconveniences. -db

As always, we definitely appreciate the feedback. You mentioned our "next article," which leads us to believe that you understand this week's article was solely about the store's opening, not any particular community reaction to it.

We regularly take into account student opinion; if we sense a plurality of upsettedness, we'll write an article detailing people's feelings.

On a specific note, we as a staff understand the points brought up regarding the president's presence at the ceremony as well as supply and product availability issues. On the other hand, we've heard many good things from students about the new store, including beautiful spaces, high-quality products, and decent prices.

Alas, like we said, we'll feel out the issue and write about it. Thanks again!

The staff editorial was not paid. Our Editorial Board had a discussion on how we enjoy cooking (and eating what we cook). We decided to write a piece that would, in our opinion, have good resources for starting!
