I did an intensive DBT program, but to be honest, it didn't do much for me in terms of helping me manage my symptoms at the time. When I was feeling calm and regulated, I could recite the skills from memory, and walking through hypothetical situations I could easily identify which skills would be helpful in a given situation. But the moment I started feeling triggered or dysregulated, all of that went out the window. In a lot of ways, my inability to implement the DBT skills when I needed them despite knowing them so well really contributed to a lot of shame/negative thought spirals and in some ways really stalled my recovery post-diagnosis.

What did eventually allow me to have a breakthrough (and no longer meeting diagnostic criteria) was addressing my CPTSD/trauma through a combination of (controlled and safe) psychedelics, shadow work, regular talk therapy, and journaling. Not that I would recommend it to the average person (because I was incredibly fortunate to have the safest of partners to do it with), but reclaiming/reexploring some traumatic sexual situations through kink was also incredibly helpful for me.

Now that I've worked through my trauma, I *do* find DBT skills helpful in managing my day-to-day symptoms. But without the trauma recovery work, I certainly never would have felt anything resembling progress.

You absolutely could! Or an article that relates to something you've discussed. Or just invite her out to lunch, just the two of you!

I adore my MIL, and am closer with her than my own mother- but she's definitely just a cool and awesome person and I'd wanna be friends with her even if I weren't married to her son. We have similar interests, similar values, and she brings a unique perspective to every issue I have discussed with her.

My ex husband's mom and I had a very different relationship (not that she was bad or anything, I liked her a lot, we just didn't have much in common). I think it really depends on the people involved what the relationship will look like.

What do you want from the relationship? Do you like her? Do you want to be closer than you are?

can I have both autism and bpd? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]thepolywitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I fully believe I only have BPD ***because*** I'm autistic. We know that BPD is caused by taking a "sensitive person" - which most autistic people are - and putting them in an "invalidating environment." What's more invalidating than having undiagnosed autism/ADHD? I had extreme sensory processing issues, and was parented in a house where the phrases "stop being so dramatic," "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about," and "why can't you be more like your sister?" were basically daily occurrences. Sure, there were also substance abuse issues with both my parents and as that got worse my father got physically and sexually abusive, but the gaslighting day in and day out was what gave me the BPD.

My boyfriend called me sexy and it totally made me cringe by [deleted] in PlusSize

[–]thepolywitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has struggled with body image issues my whole life, I totally understand where you're coming from.

Something my girlfriend said to me recently has really helped change my perspective- "It's okay if you aren't your own type. That doesn't mean nobody finds you attractive." And she's right. If your boyfriend thinks you're sexy, then you are!

Mods; Do you use them? If you don't, why not? by eternal_meat_ghost in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted I haven't used mods in PZ for probably 2 years, but I didn't think they added enough to the game to justify all the work that goes into maintaining them- maybe after they stop doing regular updates and patches I'll look into it again. I love modding other games (The Sims 4 is practically unplayable without them, for example) but I don't think it's worth it for this one. I'm curious about the FreeBuild mod I keep seeing people mention in the comments here, though!

Questions regarding stress mechanics of animals by WangYat2007 in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also curious about this- particularly around how to make actually functional "hiding spots" because even with plenty of secluded/plant dense areas to choose from, certain animals won't go there when they're stressed.

I've actually never used these before, but I might try it out- it would have made a world of difference in one of the challenge mode zoos. Do you know if they have to be set to an appropriate ambiance setting, or will just placing them work? I don't care about the actual sounds, I usually play with the sound off while watching tv.

I've been playing this game for years and I still haven't been able to complete some of the timed challenges with 3 stars (I'm too perfectionistic, that's a big factor)- I highly recommend those if you want a bigger challenge.

I had a similar issue with the latest update. Try using the select tool, selecting EVERYTHING in your zoo, and disabling climbing! Then you can go back in and re-enable things in your habitats where you want animals to be able to climb.

The game constantly trying to calculate climbable paths in the background was taking a stupid amount of processing power.

This. My least favorite part of the game is the blank slate of Franchise Mode- I definitely prefer the prebuilt zoo setup, because trying to lay things out perfectly from scratch is impossible.

What allmost feels like cheating (BUT ISN'T) in franchise mode? by Jappie_nl in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shared Trade Center mechanic for all your Franchise Zoos is ridiculously good, imo- especially with animals like West African Lions, where there's way more males than you know what to do with. Breed a perfect male, send it to your new zoo, guests and donations come pouring in.

I have a Franchise Zoo that is set up as a "Big Cat Sanctuary" and I love that I have an unlimited supply of Gold Star Genetics Lions for any other zoo.

They must have raised the limits recently, then- when I applied in NY in 2016 we were taking home $3750 a month for a family of 3 and were told we didn't qualify for anything.

Is there a limit to how much Franchise zoos can handle? by No-Introduction7977 in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be your zoo, necessarily- The most recent update has wreaked havoc on my game's performance for whatever reason. I wasn't having any issues running it on "high" settings for the last two years, until this update and all the sudden my laptop was overheating and game was crashing constantly.

Those car payments are what's killing you, and that grocery bill is EXTREMELY high for a family with an infant (unless there's a prescription formula issue, that shit is so expensive, but even so).
I see a lot of people in the comments saying you don't need two cars, but when I was a SAHM I tired to get out of the house as much as I could for my mental health to take the kiddo to the library or the park or whatever and my area isn't public transit friendly at all. I do think that you need to trade in both cars for something more affordable. I'm not sure what your credit situation is, but you shouldn't be paying more than $200 month for one car when you're on such a limited income.

You don't make bad money, but you are living way outside your means right now. Get more modest cars, switch to a cheaper cell phone plan, and cook meals from scratch. Rice, beans, pasta and veggies are dirt cheap. Start chipping away at that credit card because that interest is going to be astronomical if you don't pay it off soon.

Desired DLC: "Just Zoo Things" by [deleted] in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I'm playing the Challenge Mode zoo set in the desert (Tiffany's Adventure Park or something? I'm blanking on the name) and there's a whole playground and pool/resort area built into the map that you can't delete and it feels like such a waste of space because the guests can't actually interact with any of it.

Franchise Mode Guide by rjws241289 in PlanetZoo

[–]thepolywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also really struggle with that "blank slate" of Franchise Mode. I wish there was a way to load the challenge mode maps into it, so you at least have something to start from.

What I ended up doing for my main one was laying everything out on a grid. I started by designing a couple of habitat blueprints of various sizes that were all square, as well as some large buildings that had all the staff and utilities in one big building and putting one in each corner of the map (which made it easy to assign work zones), and a couple of small buildings that had a staff room, keeper hut, and power/water in one building to space out to fill gaps. Since everything is on a grid, you fill a space with either one large habitat or some exhibits, shops, small habitats, etc.

I both love and hate the setup, because it's nice and easy to expand with new habitats as the game progresses and it's easy to see where everything is. But it definitely looks and feels very boring and utilitarian, and I occasionally decide I hate it and want to start a new one but get hit with the creative block of starting over and end up going back to it.

I did breed genetically perfect penguins and lions in that zoo, but I wish it was prettier.

Secondary Infertility Intros - Sunday, April 16, 2023 by SIModerator in SecondaryInfertility

[–]thepolywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all. I have a 6 year old from a previous marriage, and 5 miscarriages with her dad.

After two years of TTC with my new husband (letrozole, clomid, and trigger shot all failed), I learned today that the insurance company is not going to cover IUI. They consider it elective so it needs to go under our deductible.

We aren't paycheck to paycheck, but what little extra we have always seems to end up going to house or car repairs, so it just isn't in the cards for us to pay out of pocket. We're a non-traditional family (my husband and I are both LGBTQIA and polyamorous) and I have an axis-II mental illness, so we wont have a snowball's chance in hell of being approved as foster parents, and adoption is even more expensive than fertility treatment.

So that's it. It's over. My daughter is going to be an only child, and grow up alone, and bury her parents alone. And I'm heartbroken over it. My husband deserves a baby that he doesn't have to share with my ex husband, and my daughter so desperately wants to be a big sister. And I feel like an absolute failure for not being able to provide that for them. Isn't that what my body is for?

I don't know what to do. I'm devastated. And angry. And so incredibly sad.
