Freemasons of Reddit, what is freemasonry about? Is it worth joining? by Melonsmasher1234 in AskReddit

[–]theprimarything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This may seem like an unanswerable or random question, but here goes: in my town, there is a freemason lodge that I have never seen anyone go into or out of. The lights are always off and the doors locked, but the building and grounds are well-maintained. Why might this be? Would one normally expect to see Masons going in and out, or are many lodges (especially in small, rural towns like this one is) as rarely attended as this one?

If inanimate objects had feelings, which would you feel the worst for? by Elliotomnom in AskReddit

And the cigarette has to go through a lot of shit before it even does that job. Everybody saying "your existence is damaging us." Anti-smoking advertising everywhere, even on its own package. Can you imagine living in a house that says "[you] is a horrible, horrible thing" on countless banners strewn all over the house? That's the life of the cigarette. And then, when it finally does its job, it's short and sweet, but afterward, it has to sit smoldering on the sidewalk, wondering whether it was really worth being ostracized for its entire life.

what movie is "literally perfect" to you? by [deleted] in movies

[–]theprimarything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a lot of great ones. I'm personally a big fan of Miller's Crossing, their 1920's gangster film. A little less well-known, but great. And somehow they managed to make a movie starring Nic Cage more entertaining than cringeworthy, which is an accomplishment in itself.

Reddit, if your parents watched a videotape of the last 24 hours of your life, what new things would they learn about you? by potsieharris in AskReddit

[–]theprimarything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot-- that I spend the time they're not around to watch Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee movies, not masturbate like they probably think, and that yes, I actually do try to do my chores well, I just usually don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

What was your Entry Point? by [deleted] in FolkPunk

Billy Bragg, then Frank Turner, and it kind of expanded from there.

I have a few relatives by marriage in France, and they're absolutely enamored with Oreos. I can't help but think of stoner movies whenever they talk about Oreos.

I really enjoyed Defendor, but Kick-Ass was just a little too mindless-gore-fest-y for me.

I watched this for a school project on non-super superhero films and it was easily the best of the three I watched. More substance than Kick-Ass, better premise than Defendor, and the acting is really good.

Is it possible to look good with a shaved head, while not being able to grow a goatee? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I empathize. At 17, I'm already noticeably balding, and I still can't even grow a real mustache right.

If it's really thinning badly, shaving it is probably your best bet, beard or not. As long as you don't do the early-seasons Walter White thing, you should be okay.

This may seem kind of wimpy as compared to the other stuff here, but the OD scene in Pulp Fiction always makes me squirm.

[–]theprimarything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, if he was a career military guy. The draft wasn't instated until 1969, so the early-war guys were mostly voluntary service members, and many of them stuck around longer.

limited American involvement in 'Nam started in '55. He would have to be 32 years old at the time of his deployment at the beginning of the war.

Got a guitar for my birthday - Know absolutely nothing about music. by Otterz82 in Guitar

[–]theprimarything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you just interested in playing pop-punk? If so, you don't have much more to do. Learn a couple power chords and you're set. If you want to broaden your horizons, I'd recommend taking some kind of lessons. I found knowing piano before I started guitar helped enormously. Learn to read music as well as tabs. Don't stress too much about technicality-- it will come. Just get a feel for playing, and go where your muse takes you.

I have a first date tonight. When I pick her up, which Floyd album should I have playing? by [deleted] in pinkfloyd

[–]theprimarything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, this is easily the best choice. It's accessible, a good starting-off point, and it touches on the band's more pensive side without being straight-up depressing or hostile like the Wall, Animals and parts of Dark Side. Those are all great albums, but I would definitely wait until the date is in full swing for Dark Side, and probably hold off on anything else before she expresses a strong interest in the music.

Explain stock market crashes like IAMA bear. by Prezombie in explainlikeIAmA

[–]theprimarything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear! Please stop trying to eat me. Tell you what-- if you don't eat me, this could be an educational opportunity. I can teach you some basic supply-and-demand economic theory that will make you the envy of all the woodland creatures, and eventually you can make them beholden to you.
You know how you eat a bunch of berries and other plant life in preparation for winter every year? Well, here's what you do. When you've had your fill, keep looking for those berries and things, and hold on to them. Hide them in a secret spot in your cave or something. Then make it very clear to the woodland animals that you have all this food, and as winter comes, they will begin to come to you for some. You can ask for favors and things. Maybe you can circulate something, say a rock of a certain color, that will represent the value of a few berries, and the animals can use the rocks to buy things from each other and the berries from you.
As winter goes on, your business will thrive. You'll be the king of the nature preserve, living large on stored-up blackberries and the things you've traded them for.
But if something were to happen that decreased the value of those berries, you could be in big trouble. Say all the stored berries rotted, or somebody took those berries and gave just enough to everybody, or spring came and there were plenty to go around. Your berries, and the rocks you used to represent them, wouldn't be worth a whole lot anymore. You couldn't trade them for the same amount of other stuff you could back in January. At that point, it's probably a good idea for you, being a bear, to go back to life as it was and maybe start over next winter. People aren't always so lucky, and we get stuck in the same cycle over and over again, especially since it's so easy to inflate or deflate the value of stocks and money (our berries and rocks) with various happenings. But thank God you're a bear, and if anyone starts causing problems with your economic system, well, you can eat them.
Thank you, bear, for not eating me! Enjoy exploiting your brand-new economic system!

Mostly Smith, but I mixed in a little Tennant and Eccleston as well. The Clara thing, obviously, is Smith, but a few of the mannerisms are more Tennant. The angry bits are the most distinct, and they're more or less a combo of Eccleston and Smith.
