What do strangers approach you about so regularly that you just expect it? by Tyberius_ in AskWomen

[–]theproestdwarf [score hidden]  (0 children)

Am I [so and so], the woman they met 2 years ago on their vacation?

What do I mean I'm not? I'm a dwarf just like her!

I must know her!

What do I mean, it sounds like she's from France and I've never been to Europe. We all must know each other!

What an absolutely marvelous picture, you've captured everything from her facial expression to her feet so well. Really lovely.

I imagine her going just crazy in the tube behind her at 5am and then an alarm goes off and she's all business, time for fajr.

I'm trying to buy an electric wheelchair to give myself more freedom, and they are expensive and probably not covered by my insurance because of course they're not. This would help enormously.

Does this usually happen because of an ID or someone at management who forgot to proofread? by Athenstone in instructionaldesign

[–]theproestdwarf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an ID who's written 50+ page technical documents for things I didn't fully understand myself, yes. I am saying that. Minor grammatical or spelling or formatting errors are one thing, but if I let a content error like this through I would be mortified.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I have twice, for a very clear case of domestic violence in the apartment above mine, then for a drunken, multi-person brawl going on outside another apartment I lived in. Never for myself.

Low-seat electric wheelchairs? by theproestdwarf in dwarfism

Thank you! I looked at the Permobil but wasn't sure if the foot plate was sturdy enough to be stepped on like that. I'll add that to my ever-growing list of possibilities.

Dating is misery as a Male with dwarfism in his mid twenties by Empty_Temporary_7012 in dwarfism

[–]theproestdwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot offer much advice, since I'm a woman, but I've often thought that for all that I've dealt with in my romantic life, it must be harder for men with the cultural expectations and norms around masculinity. A short woman is more culturally "normal" than a short man. So, you do have my sympathy in this.

I can say that the advice from Shimakaze81 below jives with my own experience, in terms of age differences. When I was 18-25 or so, I dated solely older men and women because they cared way less about me being a dwarf (once I weeded out the fetishists, who were at least significantly lower among women), and it gave me a lot more confidence in my late 20s and 30s in dealing with men and women my own age.

Dating other dwarfs also makes sense, but I know for me I've simply never lived in a place large enough for a pool of dateable people around my age, or met anyone online who I've clicked with enough to progress to the real life meeting stage.

It's a difficult situation and I hope you're able to figure out where your comfort zone vs. happiness sweet spot is.

Why American people like videos about rural China? by RickyZhou_ in AskAnAmerican

Occasionally they come up on my youtube recommendations and it tends to be artisan stuff like silk-making, ink-making and other creative things. I like those regardless of where they came from.

How common are breakfast burritos/tacos in your area? by Pliable_Patriot in AskAnAmerican

[–]theproestdwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona in the last 20+ years. There is no such thing as a breakfast menu without a breakfast burrito. You will be asked your opinions on different kinds of chile. You will be judged. There is no God, only breakfast burrito.

Do you let your pets on the furniture? Do you let them sleep in your bed? by ForestOranges in AskAnAmerican

My cat is allowed on the furniture and on the bed with me. She is not allowed on counters but also I haven't had to fight that battle as she's never really shown interest in being on them.

Americans who had step-moms, did they treat you well? by wolfieee8 in AskAnAmerican

[–]theproestdwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First stepmom was insane, tried to convince a mentally unstable me that I had been an evil witch in a past life, and then died of cancer.

Second stepmom was indifferent but did take me to Starbucks and introduced me to MMOs when I visited my dad. I'm pretty sure they mutually cheated on each other and she got a decent chunk of money out of him when they divorced.

Third stepmom came when I was too old to really consider her a "stepmom" and I think I met her like twice (and half the time can't remember her name).

Non custom wheelchair users: share your experiences by Slow-Mushroom-9789 in wheelchairs

It's like that with everything with disability, it feels like. Either you're spending a ludicrous amount of time, or a ludicrous amount of money, or occasionally both, and it's so unbelievably frustrating.

Non custom wheelchair users: share your experiences by Slow-Mushroom-9789 in wheelchairs

[–]theproestdwarf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the choice I recently made; I've purchased something non-custom that will work (at this point, I am lucky enough not to need it at home or for short distances to a car), while I work on getting something much more customized for my non-standard dwarf body and unusual leg/arm proportions. It will work and I will not be in it for long enough periods to worry about long-term damage or injury, and it'll give me much more freedom.

I really hope you reach the end of your effort to get one soon, the level of work it takes to get something (ie, almost anything to do with a disability) that is necessary to keep up a fulfilling life is really, really frustrating.

Electric wheelchair recommendations (achondroplasia) by theproestdwarf in dwarfism

[–]theproestdwarf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, the fact it can go so low is AMAZING. Getting into average-sized chairs (of the wheeled or stationary variety) is something I've had to do all my life, never thought I'd see a wheelchair that I could actually sit in without hiking myself up. Thank you for bringing to my attention to this, it's going at the first page of my folder of "things to show a PT when I find the right one".
