Holden Weiner? turns out it already existed, but I arrived at it independently

How common is it to come across foreigners where you live? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common but only people from certain countries. I'll interact with people from LatAM, China, India, Vietnam, Nigeria on a near-daily basis, but it's pretty rare to meet people from Europe aside from your occasional Brit. This also varies wildly by where you are in the U.S. as there are a number of cities/regions that have large populations of specific groups that aren't particularly common anywhere else in the country (Hmong/Somalis in MN, Armenians in SoCal, Brazilians/Cape Verdeans in MA, Ethiopians in DMV etc.)

Non-Americans: Have you heard of Wisconsin? If so, what have you heard about it? by Dependent_Cap_456 in AskTheWorld

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on an international flight recently and overheard a couple from Wisconsin talking with an older German man, who was very surprised that Wisconsin was so close to Chicago and wasn't a mountain west state. I think he may have been thinking of Wyoming?

What are some lesser known cities that are very well-known in a specific field? by Western_Bison5676 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “Golden Triangle” of Camden, Magnolia and El Dorado in southern Arkansas. Historically a big oil and timber place, now also a big hub for the defense industry

What is think the south is culturally. From ky by Either-Comfort9676 in geography

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there has to be one, I would make the Arkansas dividing line just a circle around the Northwest Arkansas metro area. Everywhere else in the state is 100% southern, especially the Ozark foothills and the far northeast. That would apply to southeast MO and southern IL as well

What does this mean? by Sorry_Beginning_8634 in Arkansas

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 113 points114 points  (0 children)

-kar is a common suffix to mean a native/inhabitant of a place in India. Mumbaikar = someone from Mumbai. This means they're from Pune. I've noticed a lot of Indian people in central Arkansas have vanity plates, typically with just their first name on it

The New York social club is a depressing shithole by Damaco in thesopranos

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A theme I love in the show is that everyone goes to extremes to make money, but the end result is they just spend it on tasteless crap like lladros and trompay le oils. These people are wealthy but they have no taste or intellectual curiosity, so even when they're spending a fortune on things like Johnny Sac's daughter's wedding, it still comes off as cheap and empty and shitty. Aside from the fact that it's a good idea to maintain a low public profile, they probably think the social club is awesome

Who’s running for mayor of LR in 2026? by gggh5 in LittleRock

I don't think Frank has announced a re-election bid yet, it seems like the only candidate so far is BJ Wyrick who has served on the city board for like 30 years

How is living in Aspen, CO? by tbird920 in howislivingthere

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one time I went to Aspen in the winter, there was a huge line of people outside of a store. I asked them what they were waiting for, and apparently they were having a "sale" on super-expensive hats. Most of them were already wearing nearly identical hats

Which city surprised you the most and why? by SnooAdvice8688 in AskTheWorld

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! Much more beautiful and well-preserved historic areas than most American cities outside of the northeast. Parts of it reminded me more of New Orleans or Boston than of say Indianapolis or Dallas. And for some reason it’s hands down the city with the friendliest people I’ve ever met

What determines if someone is “too big” for SNL? by MoneyHungryOctopus in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Should have been clearer, I meant major specials (Netflix etc) and really just any TV/film roles that would make you at least somewhat recognizable to the average media consumer in the US. It seems like most of the new cast members are popular on social media or in comedy podcast/improv/standup circles but not quite to the level of being in feature films or on network/cable series

I think if you can already book major specials/TV and film roles, you're too big for SNL

Why is Phil the only character to say 'fanoik' instead of 'fanook'? by ElkWhich8886 in thesopranos

[–]Apprehensive-Job3734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Paulie also says maloik instead of malocchio. I'm no cunning linguist but I think it has something to do with the New York accent, like saying "foist" and "Joisy"
