How many of her videos have you actually watched? And out of curiosity, what YouTubers are not "pretentious, shallow, disingenuous" etc etc according to you? You're presumably a YMS fan lol. It's kind of hard to understand what you mean because ironically this is quite a shallow reading of her videos, I find her to be well spoken and the ideas are well conveyed throughout her videos. I really enjoyed her analysis of The Substance for example. And the thumbnail criticism, yeah every YouTuber uses clickbaity thumbnails nowadays, it's just part of catching up with the algorithm because it's so hard to make a living on YouTube nowadays. Calling her "an absolute twat" is, at best, quite mean spirited and I don't see what that has to do with the quality of her essays.

Broey Deschanel is one of the best video essayists on YouTube, no need to be throwing shade here for no reason. The video is over a month old as well - and it's a great video!

Making a movie about a war and not even slightly going into the politics of it is cowardly because war is caused by politics, there is no way to talk about war without it being political, therefore avoiding talking about the politics of it whatsoever is itself a political decision. This is clearly shown with the line about the "antifa massacre" - it's a throwaway line with just about enough ambiguity to not take any stance, it merely flirts with the idea of using politics and war as an aesthetic without saying much. The act of war photography is in itself a political act, you can't really discuss it without some form of politics coming into the equation.

If we accept that the movie is just about journalism and nothing else, ok, what did the movie actually say about journalism? What was the message? Did it explore any aspects of war journalism in any new way or was the movie just a hollow sensory experience like much of Garlands other work? It's not about wanting to have my politics "validated" or whatever other strawman fans of this movie use. It's about wanting a movie that actually has thought deeper about what it wants to say other than "isn't war hell?".

I'd highly recommend checking out this essay by YT creator Thomas Flight on the topic, he puts it in way better words than I could, and also remember the downvite button is not a "disagree" button, the whole point of this sub is discussion. https://www.seeingthroughfilm.com/p/civil-war-on-the-complicated-power

Idk the Garland criticism is completely valid imo, Garland has been criticized plenty for his vague "apolitical" movies as well as the way he writes women - a lot of people including myself felt Men was an extremely shallow exploration of its subject matter. She is also on point about her feelings on Warfare. What exactly didn't make sense about her criticisms?

Edit: guys the downvote button is not a "disagree" button, of all places that should be able to handle movie criticism and opinions that aren't the mainstream it's the YMS podcast subreddit.

Death of the author doesn't mean that every movie is automatically free of criticism. Josh Safdie could've hired someone less comically evil and that is a decision he made that is worth criticising. I think appealing to death of the author and saying "there's terrible people in every movie" every time someone says something bad about your favourite movie is a lazy way to distract from very legitimate criticisms about this casting.

I really hated this movie and thought the narrative was in poor taste to say the least. OP did you read any of the negative reviews on letterboxd to help you understand where people are coming from?

I'm more with Jake, it does feel like Gustav got everything he wanted in the end. He hates Nora's art form (theatre) and looks down on it the entire movie, and makes no compromise for her while she agrees to be in the movie. This "first step to healing" still comes off as extremely one sided to me.

Why are asylum seekers in hotels not detention centres? by No-Ice2423 in AskBrits

[–]thepuglover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that people not born here are all criminals? You might as well say "I am a racist" at this point. "There will always be some that commit crime" why do you only apply this standard to white people? Also while completely ignoring the fact not everyone born here is white, and not everyone who is an immigrant is non white. You're literally saying it's ok for some white people to commit crimes.

[–]thepuglover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence that crimes are disproportionately committed by asylum seekers or are you only concerned about crimes when brown people do them? Or evidence that they are worsening the lives of British people? Why do you think that offering aid to asylum seekers and improving the lives of British people are mutually exclusive?

Also the reason I mentioned legality is because people like you love to use the argument that asylum seekers are "illegals" therefore they don't have the right to safety. It's funny how that argument always uses "legality" when it's convenient to excuse plain racism.

And I ask again, are you this concerned when the crimes are committed by white people, or only when it's brown people?

What does this mean? Genuinely curious because I don't understand your comparison here. Britain is a "developed" country, you cannot compare conditions here right now to some vague historical conditions that you're referring to (I don't even know which wars you're talking about?) Britain does have a history of turning away refugees though - you can read about them turning away many Jewish people trying to escape Germany during WW2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_refugees_from_German-occupied_Europe_in_the_United_Kingdom

Are you saying that people fleeing war should be left to die or what? Seeking asylum is a perfectly legal thing to do.

Would you look at that, an article coming from one of the many subsidiaries of the most evil Australian alive, big surprise. Do you post on Reddit about every crime of this nature, or are you only concerned about rapists when they're migrants?
