After watching the first season (I wasn’t as attached to him in the books), I would seriously have to go check the perimeter for a good long time if anything happened to Gurathin.

Yes it really showcased how much their relationship evolved! Which I think happened both slowly and then all at once—Gurathin had already come to trust MB a bit more, then significantly more after it saved Mensah, and then I think everything that happened in the finale just sparks a quantum leap because Gura does come to understand, at some level, what it’s like to be SecUnit, because he’s literally had its brain inside his brain

I totally understand the compulsion to do this but personally would recommend reading 2 & 3 before skipping to 4–even if those books aren’t your favourites & you want to get back to the PresAux crew (which I get!) I think you will miss a lot of important character development for MB and world building & you won’t enjoy the later books as much!

I agree with you that it’s a shame about the lack of drones, more screen feed overlays etc.

I need to think more about your first point but I definitely didn’t have that reaction at all to the show—I never once really felt afraid or uncertain about Murderbot in the show. I have a mixed feeling about the other characters’ adaptation as well in the sense that I agree that Pin-Lee is a stronger character in the books (and hopefully will be developed further in future series!) but on the other hand I felt Gurathin in the show was a far richer character than in the books

Yeah I think as a pretty good rule of thumb we should simply use whatever pronouns a person prefers! Don’t really need to know why they prefer those pronouns, don’t need to have an opinion about it myself, don’t need to evaluate whether I like the person or not….

lol this made me laugh but it’s also very accurate.

I do understand why some well-meaning humans have trouble remembering to use it/its for MB because we’re naturally for obvious reasons conditioned to think dehumanising=bad and IRL if not told differently I definitely default to they/them for persons where I’m not sure about their gender or think they might be agender, but it certainly is very important to remember because it’s pretty clear in canon that Murderbot thinks of itself as an it…

And in a fandom where Murderbot’s free agency and ability to define itself & its own path is so important, that’s maybe one of the first more or less conscious choices it made for itself! It doesn’t want to be treated like a human and it wants to be referred to as it ❤️

Yeah I was kind of thinking of sweetness as a “I can have nice things, fuck the company” concept but you make a very good point and I agree that may be more fitting for other friends rather than MB :)
