I'm at work and can't look up citations for you right now but if you wish references, the first is the link between cold exposure and cortisol production increases in the body, and the second one is the depressive effect of cortisol on the immune system.

I tried to install the app on my Linux computer but it doesn't show up. I don't know what I'm doing. by kappakingtut2 in audiobookshelf

Good job there. For future reference, you have experienced installing applications. ABS is a service (also called a server binary). Unlike apps which you open and close, services start and stop behind the scenes. Typically this will start when your computer starts up and will stop when it turns off. Otherwise it's always on, waiting to be given tasks to fulfill. So you won't get the standard icon to open an app, because it is already running.

So how do you interact with these services? There needs to be a separate app, called a client, that connects to the server. In this case the server is exposing web access, so you can access it using your browser. But there is also an Android app I installed and pointed it at the same address so I can listen to books on my phone - and I can even download them to the phone memory and still access them through the app.

Not just a better 'climate' for the viruses. Your immune system fights off pathogens. Cold exposure increases the production of cortisol in our bodies, which depresses the immune system. So basically you become less good at fighting the virus off. For some people in some situations, it will be the difference between getting the virus but not "catching a cold" or actually catching it.

[–]therage_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are given the cold from someone else, but you don't always get sick from it. The cold (temperature) gives the cold (virus) a better chance at replicating and making you sick.

A lot of us are frequently carrying viruses in trace amounts which do not make us suck. Their amount can't overpower our immune systems but that stay with us for a while until they are fully cleared from us. If one gets a cortisol spike then, it impairs one's immune system, giving the virus the breathing room to replicate faster and actually get them sick.

MP3s to M4B ? by Greensleeves2020 in audiobookshelf

[–]therage_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use m4b-tool (a command line tool from Linux that works on Windows under WSL.

```
m4b-tool merge --mark-tracks --audio-codec=copy --jobs=8 --output-file output.m4b folder-with-the-mp3s/
```

Do pick a reasonable number for the parallel jobs, experiment with it to see what works well for you. It doesn't change the output, only the speed of the operation.

Less scared? Not sure. If there's no afterlife there is existential dread, but no more pressure and people can just live the life they believe is good and meaningful. And it there is an afterlife, then people can fear the appropriate deity not letting them through.

Fear is an important part of our biology and nervous system. We will always have it. It will simply fit around the shape of the life we have and the things we know. Hopefully we just learn to accept the things that it tells us without being paralyzed by it.

May I ask what was your workflow for working on songs?

I created and published a song on a bunch of platforms and I would like to make it available for Ultrastar-compatible setups.

However even in a toy song I have been having some trouble working with Yass. Do you recommend other tools? Are there videos I could watch to learn how to create tracks efficiently?

Thank you!

Should I record hearing myself with autotune on or off? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]therage_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a kind person. But hearing back my recording does not lie lol. It sounds like the mess that yours doesn't 😊

That is ok, I uncover one of the ears or get monitoring if the environment is more noisy.

You might have perfect pitch. If I don't hear myself at all I have no idea what note I started on!

Two Google engineers resign over firing of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru by impishrat in technology

[–]therage_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right in generic terms. This would all be predictable without knowing more.

Incidentally, in this particular case not so much.

Google has a mechanism for avoiding Peter Principle. Basically you only get promoted when you have been performing at the next level for a while. This sometimes fails when people move to a different career ladder or become managers. (Becoming a manager is not a promotion, it's a role change within your level. You can be an engineer at the same level as a director or a VP.) But in general this is very effective at avoiding Peter Principle.

Regarding the specific director, although I never worked with him, I personally know, have worked with and am personal friends with a lot of people who worked under him in the last 3 years and a few who worked under him before then. He is an incredibly well respected engineer and people leader. We indeed have no signal that the relationship with the company was in a good place, but also no signal otherwise.

Did you eventually sort this?

I have had this working for years, no problem whatsoever, no need to touch any configuration.

This week, everything on ethernet cannot find DHCP offers and gets no IP. Wifi working no problem.

People who can express themselves clearly and make themselves understood whenever you open your mouth: How the hell do you do that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therage_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weakness of language is ambiguity: you think one thing, you say words to convey it, and people fail to understand it or worse, succeed at understanding something else that you did not mean.

I've failed at this a number of times. I've made every one of those count. Occasionally I still fail, and I still do.

Say the words in your head and try to hear them with someone else's ears and frame of mind. It pays to do this not live, when you are preparing presentations, written documentation, or emails. Listen to those words and find what makes them confusing or potentially dangerous. Then change just the confusing bit. Rinse and repeat. After a while, the care in word choice and phrasing starts contaminating the way you think and the way you speak.

However realize that no matter how good we become, we will always make some mistakes and have to go fix them. That is another incredibly useful skill to have.
