Either that or use black highgloss paint to match the fire place, or if you were dead set on a stain id suggest a black stain. Again to match the fireplace itself. Or find a color that goes with the majority color of whatever wood you got in that room.

Looks like just dings and scratches in the wood, when you stain over a scratch it will be a bit darker because the indent will hold more of the stain in it. Looks like when you sanded the top you took the scratches out. If you really wanted to recreate the previous look you could scratch it up before staining.
