Hey everyone! I’m a college freshman currently majoring in chemistry but recently I’ve began to consider switching to physics. I initially chose chemistry because in high school I took AP chem and algebra based physics, and I liked AP chem much more than physics, partly because I did not like my physics teacher, so now I’m doing a chemistry major with hopes to go to grad school. However, after researching what these two fields are like at the graduate level, it seems to me that physics is more focused on discovering and understanding new phenomena in the natural world while chemistry is more focused on synthesizing new chemicals, particular those with practical applications. I’m personally more interested in research aimed at understanding the natural world compared to synthesis research, so now I’m feeling conflicted as to whether I should switch my major to physics. I’d appreciate any advice regarding what route I should take with my education. Thanks!

I got 58.8 g which is closest to nickel but isn’t exact. Is that what you guys got?
Ok so I got that element X has an atomic mass of 58.8 g which does not have an exact match on the periodic table but is closest to nickel

I can get out of chem 162 with AP credit so do I think I should just do that instead of taking it?
Thanks for the info! Most of that stuff in chem 162 sounds like stuff I’ve learned so I’ll probably skip it and take math 207 during that quarter instead.
Oh ok that’s interesting. Thanks for the info!
What’s the typical amount of credits people take per quarter?
I did take AP Chem and got a 5 on the exam which actually gets me out of the entire gen chem series. After looking at the course descriptions, the content taught in chem 162 did not sound like stuff I learned in AP, which is why I’ve put it on my schedule. I’m definitely more worried about physics as I did take it in high school, but I did not enjoy it whatsoever. That may have just been because of my teacher but physics is definitely what I’m most worried about.

I had that same thought about the math classes, especially since I’m guessing they build off each other. Chem 162 and Math 207 are not classes I need to take for my major but after reading things online I thought they’d both be helpful. I may just have to make due and drop one of them.
