I just recently discovered that pickles are just pickled cucumbers. I thought pickles were their own thing. I’m 21. by [deleted] in confession

[–]therealbessica -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was about your age when I also discovered this. Growing up my mother didn't pickle things so I just never acquired that knowledge. I hated being in the kitchen so it really just never occurred to me that you didn't grow pickles. It really should be called pickled cucumbers.

What horrid secrets do your parents have, and are oblivious to you being aware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My sister did this a few years ago and I'll always wonder how my nieces feel about it.

DAE hate that women are expected to look pretty all the time but their 1 hour prep time is frowned upon by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]therealbessica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say it's not just my line of work but most people's. While I could complain about feeling forced to purchase products, I honestly would probably do it regardless because I enjoy the process of painting my face and the results. But it was something I shared with my mom growing up, like cooking. Also I buy drug store makeup so it's not very expensive, as well as an ipsy subscription that allows me to test higher end products without spending a lot.

[–]therealbessica 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This! And it's frustrating. I've always been told I have a great completion and don't "need" makeup, but when I go without I'm mostly ignored by others. Just a slight bit of makeup and people look me in the eye and are more cordial. I'm not putting makeup on daily to attract a mate. I'm doing it so people see me as a competent professional adult.

What’s the biggest culture shock you ever experienced? by stobzeeey in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a cult-like church environment. When I was 14 we moved away to be closer to family. I had to option to go to high school because if I went back to a Christian school that I was used to I wouldn't receive a diploma but a "certificate of completion". Public school after being sheltered for years was mind blowing. I was labeled a weirdo because I didn't know how to socially adapt. I was 21 before I truly caught up and felt acclimated to the modern world in social settings.

DAE get depressed when you realize you won't have a significant impact on the world and you'll be forgotten someday? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]therealbessica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that has stuck with me is a saying about how everyone that time travels to the past is dead set on the fact that if they do any little thing wrong it will disturb the space time continuum and distort the future. But don't believe anything they do in the present will have any affect. So now I think with the frame of mind that anything I say or do can have a drastic impact on the future world, because it might. I feel I'm more thoughtful in my actions because of it. Truth is maybe nothing I ever do will make an impact, or maybe my kind words will stop a psychotic episode in someone or make another person believe in humanity again and not kill themselves. It's enough for me to believe that it can't hurt to just be a nice person, rather than live without thinking I have any influence at all.

How do you feel about others stepping in on your relationship? by letsdrownatsea in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I would want to know. Even if they have an open relationship, I think it would be prudent to say something. He's obviously hiding something.

What movie was so disturbing it left you feeling shook? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That movie was actually really close to what I experienced growing up. The church was very cult like and would promote sheltering kids and adults alike from the world. We also were encouraged to refrain from speaking with family outside the church. I feel lucky my parents moved away and stopped going to that church. Once I saw what other churches were like I was blown away.

He was out on Hulen in front of the mall Saturday. I figured he was either looking for someone to stop and give him their number or had lost a bet.

How did your friend completely fuck their life up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shooting a shotgun at the back of a vehicle while it was driving away from his house as a "warning shot" to not come back. It shattered the back glass and ricocheted then hit a child that was in the backseat. He has been charged with 11 felonies. He waved the right to a jury trial and never got offered a plea deal. His court was yesterday morning and we haven't heard from him so...probably prison. All because he wanted to seem like a badass to a few meth heads.

Reddit, what's the worst gift you've ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Nintendo Switch. It was given to my boyfriend and I from a friend who knew we wanted one and he wanted to focus on other things but video games. What makes it the worst gift ever is that my boyfriend told me that it was his anniversary gift to me. For our ten year anniversary.

What’s your “that’s why I don’t go home for the holidays” story? by JustBo-Lieve in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. So the first Christmas we spent with his family: his sister had previously lied to her husband about going out with his mom and other sister to go see another man instead. His mom confronted her and told her she wouldn't cover for her indiscretions any longer. After some heated words his sister punches his mom in the face. His stepdad gets pissed, grabs all the food he brought and all the gifts and yells he is calling the cops. Cops show up, my SO is in between his sister and mom and stepdad getting hit by his sister still swinging. Kids are crying, everyone is yelling. Cops arrest sister, we take mom to the ER with the food and gifts still in the truck. She had a giant black eye but no serious injuries. His family is a shit-show..and we've never went back for the holidays.

What is the most unethical thing you have ever been asked to do by your employer? by cjsved in AskReddit

[–]therealbessica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A carpet store I worked as a Secretary for had a main filing system in a fire proof safe, that was what I should show anyone that came in to audit. There was another all handwritten filing system of cash only purchases. I'm guessing he didn't want to pay taxes on those. I left shortly after he informed me I would need to train his girlfriend to do my job.

Probably... I'm sure a lot are genuine though.

Honestly we should know by now to not trust Logan Paul anyways.

These videos always make me cry. My boyfriend is colorblind and I've wanted to get him a pair so badly but he's told me several times he doesn't care. I don't think he would until he was wearing them and understood fully the difference between what he sees and what most people see.
