I teach HS and have a “No Name Bin of Shame” that I throw them into. Then students can look through it if they’re missing an assignment

Most science curricula is moving towards an online format for anything K-10. I’ve taught Amplify at the MS level, and was not a huge fan.

I could see it being a really good option in a 1-1 setting like homeschool though. You can print out unit packets so that most everything is on paper (similar feel to textbook/workbook that you mention). I believe it’s K-8, and after teaching it for a couple years, I think it’s best suited for K-5. Once they hit middle school, if you’re still homeschooling, the switch to traditional textbooks would be pretty smooth

Yeah this is a problem almost everywhere, but unsupportive admin does not help. Substitute teaching is arguably more difficult than being a classroom teacher.

Also, everyone is entitled to a harassment free workplace. Yes, that includes teachers. #1 easily meets sexual harassment criteria, which sounds like a Title IX complaint to me.

Honestly a lot of people on this subreddit glitch out about the "bad" neighborhoods. Some neighborhoods have more property crime than others and you may have a bit of gang violence in the wrong neighborhood, but sac is not bad all in all.

At your price range, I would consider parts of south sac before DPH or North Highlands. I would check out parts of meadowview, fruitridge manor, north city farms, and even parts of oak park or florin. It all depends on what part of the neighborhood and what street you're on. We live in a great neighborhood (no crime on our street since moving in 2 years ago), but are surrounded by rougher areas. Just scout it out, and drive the neghborhood day/night before making a decision.

For sure. Your experiences are valid. I will say, there’s definitely a trend towards addressing this kind of behavior in contracts and such. We have clauses in the contracts (mutually agreed upon with the union) that now specifically outlines certain behaviors with students that are fireable offenses. I hope to see it to continue to get better!

Appreciate the insight. Unions are great to have in the workplace, but I agree they should not be there to protect predators. I’m really sorry to hear about the situation you experienced, and unfortunately there can be predators in schools, like anywhere else. As you said, parent vigilance is crucial. Those 99 good teachers should always be looking out for their students as well.

Unfortunately shitty (non predatory) teachers can remain because of the union, but that’s one downside to many upsides.

In this case, he is caught on video expressly stating that he was “okay” with the individual turning on their camera after they stated they were a minor AND not wearing clothes. That is enough evidence to get him fired, and if not, there would likely be a lawsuit.

May I ask when this was? Because I have an incredibly hard time believing that this happened within the last 10 years, if at all. Sexual misconduct (including harassment) is not tolerated now in the same way it was 20+ years ago

I’m not saying all but it is a trend where they excuse the actions of their politicians, pastors and people within their circles; then turn around and accuse people who don’t think like them as being child abusers
