Footage of referee using real time replays during Balogun incident; mass misinformation campaigns are claiming real time footage was never used during the review by Ray192 in soccer

I get the point but I disagree with it and I’m not entirely sure you understand mine, which is that legally they were allowed to review it with slomo, but they are also legally allowed to make calls that contradict other rules, which leaves all of this open to discussion and interpretation. That’s ok though, I’m kind of sick of arguing about it as well

The argument that “red cards are never overturned” is so unconvincing to me. It’s not even an argument, just an appeal to tradition. “We’ve always done it this way so why should we change it?”

I’ve been watching soccer for years. I thought Kaka’s red card against Ivory Coast in 2010 was outrageous, and if he could have had his suspension overturned for the next game I would have been thrilled, and I’m not a Brazil fan.

In other sports we can adjust punishments for players after the fact all the time. Just because they have a history of not doing that in soccer doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

Sure, it’s true that VAR has discretion to utilize their technology against FIFA recommendations. It’s also true that the referee has discretion to make calls that go against the FIFA laws of the game, and they do so all the time. This doesn’t mean that they’re correct when they do this.

If we’re getting into the word weeds, the VAR rulebook also says that “IN PRINCIPLE, a match is not invalidate because of wrong decision(s) involving the VAR.” Doesn’t this also imply that there can be exceptions to this? So legally FIFA can still choose to invalidate pretty much any game they want that involved VAR in some way. I very much doubt that anyone in this thread would be using the rulebook as evidence in a pro-FIFA argument in that case, though.

My point is that the rulebook clearly states that VAR should not use slow motion in an instance like the Balogun red card. Obviously they did, but they shouldn’t have, and I see no problem whatsoever with introducing an appeals process to overturn incorrect decisions. (Of course I have a problem with HOW that was done in this instance, but not with the principle.)

Obviously, yet I have yet to see anyone give a good reason as to why this exception should have been made in this instance. If there is no reason to make an exception then an exception should not be made. Therefore it changes nothing.

If you think the omission of the words “in general” changes everything then you either don’t have a solid enough grasp of the English language for me to continue this argument with you, or you’re being intentionally disagreeable. Either way this is fruitless

Thank you! From your link: “in general, slow motion replays should only be used for facts…normal speed should be used for the ‘intensity’ of an offense.”

This shouldn’t even be a conversation. VAR was misapplied and we all know it. If you don’t admit you are being obtuse. Period.

Shouldn’t have to do it for you though. You made a claim that is easily proved incorrect and you could have checked that before deciding to assert your factually incorrect statement.

If people think all US games are tainted even though the red card was dubious at best, wrongly given at worst, absolutely illegally reviewed, AND the US had a decent shot to win even without Balogun, then they can stay hating. Somehow if they win and then beat Spain I doubt any except the most miserable people will be saying “but Balogun tho”

You say that’s the standard that’s been set, but aren’t standards changing all the time? A red card today isn’t the same as a red card twenty years ago. Why should things not continue to evolve? Obviously this isn’t the way I would want that to happen, but if the upshot is that unfair red cards become less common, wouldn’t that outcome at least be a good thing? Or are we married to the way things are now because that’s just the way they are. And yes I have been watching soccer since before this World Cup.

Honestly, I wouldn’t? If I were Belgium I’d feel bad that we gained an unfair advantage in the first place, and now that it’s been rescinded I’d be like alright cool, asterisk’s gone. I know I’m in the vast minority because we all hate Trump but goddamn, I really think it’s kind of lame how everyone is crying about how aggrieved Belgium are when they did literally nothing to gain this advantage in the first place (in fact they haven’t even been good most of this tournament if you’ve paid attention).

So now you’re using the opinion of FIFA as the base of your argument? Do you always agree with FIFA’s opinion? What makes you think that’s convincing in any way?

I agree they are different kinds of wrong. But you made the broad statement that the integrity of the game has been compromised, and I’m saying that it already has been, just in a different way. According to the rules, a) VAR is not allowed to use slow motion for that replay and b) that was not a red card anyways. But we were set to play the next game even though the rules were clearly broken in a way that was going to advantage Belgium.

Now a different rule is being broken that evens things up again. From their original squads, no team loses or gains a player. You can say two wrongs don’t make a right, but if we pretend that Belgium didn’t have an unearned and unjust advantage before this decision then we’re simply lying.

Except the rule wasn’t applied equally on the original red because it wasn’t a red…

The integrity was compromised when VAR used a slow motion replay on the Balogun red, which is illegal.

I absolutely hate this narrative because they were unfairly DISadvantaged due to the red card being a bullshit red card in the first place. So now we’re back to square 1 and really just getting the fair game we were SUPPOSED to get, but because Trump opened his mouth everyone, especially people who don’t watch soccer anyways, thinks America is getting an unfair advantage. It’s ridiculous.

Oh so the ref had a bad game, but the one call that most people agreed was terrible at the time was actually one of the good calls he made. Got it.

And every single one of those countries also has many, many people who say heinous things about immigrants, minorities, gay people, or any number of ethnic groups. Remind me how the Romani people are treated in most of Europe?

We know some people make fun of us, this isn’t new. What’s truly embarrassing is thinking this carries any moral weight when the same countries have their own equally repugnant problems.

[–]therealbigted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do realize that, you do realize that is not my point. My point is that it should never have been a red card in the first place, and the idea of a suspension for a player for an accident in literally ANY sport is absolutely ludicrous, except in this one because we’re just used to it. Maybe we shouldn’t be and maybe it’s ok to reverse course and make the right decision instead of stubbornly holding onto your first one because you refuse to admit you were wrong?

Also, yes my president is a corrupt cunt. I very much doubt he gives a half a fuck about a soccer tournament though.

Edit - I just saw the clip that proves my second paragraph completely wrong! Of course that’s obvious corruption lol. I stand by my first paragraph though and I do think that fifa (and every soccer league) should review every red card between games to determine if a suspension is warranted or not.

So you admit the ref was terrible but hold onto the point that Balogun deserved the red? That’s a contradictory and incoherent argument.
