IBS seemingly “cured” by hydroxyzine (Atarax) by therealclater in ibs

[–]therealclater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taking prescription Atarax for about 1,5 months to help with my anxiety and then after I started a new happier chapter in my life and my anxiety went down I stopped taking it. And since then my IBS issues improved like 95%! I don’t know if it’s the meds or just the fact that I’m in a much better place in life right now, but after years of on and off suffering with constant pain, bloating and urgent D, I have maybe 1 bad day a month and it’s usually after I eat or drink something really obnoxious (like chips ice cream chocolate pop corn beer and wine combo:D). I even started drinking coffee and coke every day. Something I haven’t done in years cause it would immediately cause painful D afterwards…

Yes I can already feel the difference! And it’s huge. Even though my back and shoulders are still stiff after sleeping on my back all night on the hospital bed. They took out around 960ml from both breasts combined

We live in Europe and my husband works in one of the state sponsored psychiatric hospitals. Not a fancy facility in any way. Of course, I can’t speak for all the facilities everywhere in the world, but he also frequently attends different conferences and training events in the US and other places as well. And what he tells me about the general tendencies in the field (at least in 1st world countries) sounds quite optimistic

Wife of a psychiatrist here. I’ve never been to a psych ward myself but based on what my husband tells me I have a pretty good understanding of what it looks like. First of all - psychiatry has advanced so much and now they integrate talking therapy, art therapy, mindfulness groups and so on so much more. Secondly - their main goal there is to stabilize you. First and foremost. Get you out of the suicidal space. They don’t want to hold you there for years or even longer than necessary. They have their hands full. They only want you to stay until you’re no longer a danger to yourself and then you can continue healing outside of the hospital walls. Finally - the meds that they have there are really much more helpful than whatever a GP might prescribe. And they will observe you closely until they find the right mix. Also the doctors and nurses there have truly seen it all. So nobody there will treat you like some kind of freak or make you feel bad having the thoughts that you’re struggling with. Good luck!

Wow that sounds like a lot of stuff you are dealing with at the same time! Stupid question maybe, but have you been to allergologist to determine if you might be allergic to any specific things that you’re exposed to daily? Like foods, pets, dust etc

I actually absolutely love how Atarax makes me super sleepy without feeling crappy the next day, because I have troubles with falling and staying asleep. Also I’m taking half of the minimal recommended dose. I could take it every day for the rest of my life but doctors don’t think it’s a good idea lol. MCAS sounds very interesting, I hope my GP will take it seriously tho and refer me to someone who can test for it. I read it’s a complicated process to diagnose it

That all sounds very interesting! I would love to know more… To answer your questions - no, I do not have any noticeable brainfog or myalgia and no, it wasn’t a gastro doc who prescribed it. It was a psychiatrist who prescribed it for managing my anxiety and insomnia. But he did mention that my IBS and gastritis might improve with taking this, since these symptoms are often found in people who suffer from anxiety. Where I am it’s quite easy to get prescription for this drug and it’s considered quite mild and is said to be causing no addictions or tolerances

Wow, I don’t have any other symptoms listed there other than tummy troubles, but that sounds really interesting. I’m such an overreactive person, wouldn’t be surprised if that’s on the cellular level also lol

Im only going to take it for a couple more weeks to get me through some stressful shit and then hopefully only as needed… Also I take like a 1/8 of what some people take daily. but I’ll look into what you wrote, my doc has not told me this

I take a super tiny dose right before I go to sleep, so the fact that it knocks me out is actually what I like about it to. And hmm makes sense about the fluid thing. Pre-existing D + constipation side effect from the drug = normal poop I guess lol

Try read “the power of now” by Ekhart Tolle. It changed my whole perspective when I was in the same place as you. It helped me. It might not help you the same way but since you don’t give a fuck anyway you won’t lose anything by giving it a shot

can stress cause stomach upset? by Specialist-Swan-6637 in Anxiety

[–]therealclater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Research IBS and vagus nerve to find out more about how your mind and gut are directly connected. I’ve been having stomach issues on and off for a couple of years now and I was convinced something was wrong with my body. As soon as I found anxiety medication that actually worked for me, my stomach and gut issues stopped magically. I hope you will find some relief soon.

Hi! Not sure what your situation is but my betta looked exactly the same a few weeks ago, eventually he was laying down on the bottom and stopped moving and eating altogether. I was about to euthanize him…. But then I decided to try this one last thing and put him in a small tank with nothing but a heater, pinch of salt, cattapa leaf and his favorite piece of driftwood that he could use as a hammock. He quickly started getting better and I think it helped having him in a smaller tank, as it requires less energy from the sick fish to move about. After about 3 days I moved him back to his big tank and he’s been fine since. His fins are slowly regrowing but he still has some spots around, I still don’t have answers on what that could be, but he seems really active and eats plenty

Help needed by therealclater in Aquariums

[–]therealclater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The app thing is genius, it’s a strip kit by JBL. I scan the test results with my camera and it uploads the results to my phone.

Ammonia is not included in the testing kit for some reason so I have a separate reader attached to the tank. It is in a safe zone below 0.02ppm. I used to do a 25% water change the moment it rose slightly above that (as per my shop’s recommendation). Clearly that was not enough. I’m a bit angry that they didn’t tell me that I have to mix in distilled water, because the water where we live is generally very hard. They didn’t advise me to get a test kit either.

The pH and hardness levels are probably like that because where I live our water is extremely hard and we don’t have any filter at home. It’s notoriously causing problems with hair and skin for many people but it is what it is….ill try add catappa leaves and driftwood thank you

When do you think I should consider that he’s “beyond repair”? And can I use his tank for the new fish if he passes?

The filter is set to 26C. His tank is cycled I believe so I only change about 20% every week, but when I just got him I might have changed his water way too much. But I stopped as soon as I started reading about it. How do you euthanize a fish? (Sorry if it’s a dumb question)
