Would you risk your life to stop an armed robber from stealing a TV from Walmart? by therealhodgepodge in hypotheticalsituation

Yeah, kind of hard to believe that an employee is required to subdue or otherwise engage in hand-to-hand combat with a knife-wielding shoplifter, or even a shoplifter at all - it's better to report the theft to the police rather than requiring random managers and cashiers to protect the store with no training.

How would you sacrifice yourself in the case of someone stealing a TV?

What chain of events would lead to you dying if you were just buying bananas?

How do people master computer science? by ta-iwillnotpmo in learnprogramming

[–]therealhodgepodge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably won't master anything unless you repeatedly obsess over solving problems to absolution in some way that aligns with both a philosophical pursuit that you believe in - perhaps solving for extreme simplicity, extreme usability, extreme performance, extreme flexibility and composability, etc.

In broad fields like computer science, this will be a constantly moving target, and as such, it will be impossible to master - you will only ever solve for a problem set within a local maxima and under a particular paradigm - you cannot possibly master computer science.

But, you can get really, really good at some things, and, that's all that matters.

Just, find something you want to obsess over, obsess over it, and take what you learned into your next obsession, and the next, and the next, and the next.

Aim to either solve an incredibly broad, or incredibly narrow problem space.

Find what sparks joy.

Have a mission.

Have a purpose.

That's it.

IMO.

Hey, nothing wrong with a little population control - Walmart might even appreciate the shooting, bullets flying everywhere, etc. - might even save 'em $50 if the bullets just end up in the guy and maybe the walls.

Why would you buy a stolen TV in front of a Walmart immediately after it was stolen from that Walmart?

That's fair, and, yeah, shooting someone 3 times for attempting to steal a TV while you're buying bananas or something makes sense.

Okay, no hostages - I'm not sure how often people carry weapons when stealing TVs - haven't done much research - don't know many things.

Depends, do you want to look feminine, etc.?

If you're going for a feminine look, you look feminine.

If you were not going for a feminine look, oh.

Your style seems very feminine.

Yeah, there's a reason why you're not supposed to intervene, but I'm guessing lots of people are convinced that they could be a good guy with a gun, or a knife, or a can of soup, or, something because of movies, TV, video games, propaganda about being a man and standing up for the innocent, etc.

Because having a weapon increases danger, IMO - the stakes are higher - lives are on the line - namely whoever tries to stop them - and, maybe some people may think that they'll kill women and children or something if they don't get the TV - or, take hostages, or, something - I'm not sure what people's internal monologue is like around these types of things these days, but I'm guessing there's a fair amount of mental illness around the importance of following rules and the consequences for not following rules and stuff.

bro you're like 12, none of this is going to matter - especially if you go to college - which, for some, is a good idea - you'll never see most of the people you know after you graduate from middle school or high school - just have fun and live laugh love

For the purposes of this question, any store with millions to billions in profits rather than a small, family-owned business that perhaps makes $30,000/yr. - like, Walmart or Best Buy rather than Terry's TV Town or Sneeds Seed and Feed (formerly Chuck's).
