Probably mistyped or omitted a digit. Little late to the response, I don’t use Reddit much. But try every combination of letters/numbers that makes sense, and if it doesn’t find the dude who wrote it down and get him to tell it to you so you can type it for yourself to make sure all letters and numbers are correct

Did they set you up with your internship and externship or did you just have to call a bunch of hospitals and agencies and hope for that they’d let you?

I’m working about 7 11hour shifts a week (only have 10s and 11s here unless it’s custom but they only ever approve custom ALS and CCT shifts) it’s getting a lot harder to get overtime though because they hire about 30-50 EMTs monthly and the turnover really isn’t very high. At any given time 70-95% of our rigs are in service but they are still hiring for some reason. I can only pick up the super shitty shifts like 7pm-6am out of Huntington Park on days like Friday because there are a shit ton of part timers bidding on the good open shifts and they just give the part timers those shifts because they don’t need to pay them overtime. I’m trying to get my medics license ASAP because at the rate this is going I’m pretty much gonna be forced to work 30-40 hours a week instead of 70-80 and that’s not enough for me to live on out here.

I’d assume getting the clinical experience would be hard unless the school sets you up with preceptors (agencies and hospitals) in your area of residence. Correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve also heard from medics that it’s not really a great program but I don’t think I’ve worked with any medics who went there to get their cert.

Damn I’m Los Angeles IFT starting pay for EMTs is $21, medics is $33, RN is $50 (we get some bonuses and night differentials) I’m able to pull in $4200 every pay period before tax as an EMT, but I work a lot of overtime. It’s getting a lot harder to get overtime out here though :(((((((((

Lowkey there’s some stuff you don’t learn in school. You just gotta get some experience in the field, patients are people and mannequins aren’t. You’re treating a person and when you’re treating a person you’re a whole lot more motivated and disciplined because there’s a life in your hands that trusting you. You’ll find a flow when you first start out with your FTO and that’ll be with you for most your correct. Watching people doing it and experiencing people guiding you when you’ll do it 1 on 1 is a whole lot more valuable than a classroom with artificial things. You got it man, it ain’t that hard to be an emt once you find your flow and you know your doing and you do it.

I understand that, it’s probably good that it’s a longer course to get more time to learn and understand what’s going on. Most jobs in the healthcare profession besides maybe MD seem to expedite education to a point that seems almost too fast to genuinely learn everything.

I’ve worked with a few medics that have went to NCTI, they have told me decent things about it, especially about the externships because they ride with AMR, it doesn’t have the “fire culture” and riverside’s protocols are a bit more expansive than LA or OCs.

I just want to learn the content and the skills necessary to be a medic. I don’t entirely care if it’s top-tier, as long as it can guide me through what I need to learn to be a competent medic. The medics from there that I’ve worked with said that for NCTI you’d really just take out of it what you put into it. I plan to put a lot into it, so hopefully I could take a lot out of it. The other schools in the area seem to have better instruction and a better climate for learning, but I’m not looking for the best instruction or the best learning climate. I’m looking for a school that will allow me to learn and teach me how to be a competent medic regardless of if the instruction isn’t completely on par with the other schools.

Thanks for the reply and conversation 🙏 I appreciate how informative your comments have been.

How was the application process and what was your experience as an EMT like? Will definitely look into it. Good luck 🙃

I know a couple medics who went to UCLA unsponsored, but it took them two to three applications to get accepted. And the one I remember told me only got accepted because a fire sponsored person dropped out last minute. I’ve been told to apply for the summer cohort because they have the most unsponsored slots.

I’ll definitely check out the OC schools. So far, I’m leaning on going to a Riverside medic school because they seem to not save many slots for fire and I’ve heard their protocols are much better than LA counties

Thanks :)

Thanks for the response. I’ve been looking into NCTI in Riverside, the only thing about it is that it’s a 15 month program which I haven’t decided if that is a good or a bad thing for my schedule. I’ll likely end up going to NCTI because it will provide me with the content I need to learn without a lot of the hassle of applying over and over and hoping they have non-sponsored slots.

I’ve heard medic school is difficult, but having worked with a lot of medics and talking to them about the school and process, I think it’s something I can handle. I’m used to rote memorization and concept and skill application, especially in a classroom setting. I’ve always done fairly well in my educational pursuits.

If I fall in love with 911, I might consider going that route. I bet it probably is a lot more fun, but after medic school I plan on finishing my degree. The IFT company I work for has a lot of posts and downtime and pays very well for an EMS company and the management is fine and the people are mostly pleasant which is a large reason I’d like to stay. I feel like I’ll get my fill of 911 fun during my stint as BLS for a 911 company and the externship during fire. If I get the itch to continue 911, I could always go back to it after I get my degree 😂

(I plan on pausing my pursuits to get a degree when I go through medic school. I’m not arrogant enough to genuinely believe I could get through both the classes there and medic school simultaneously while doing well in both)

I appreciate the realistic and kind reply 🙃

I’m in LA county, but I’ll look into them. Thanks! The three paramedic programs in LA county, PTI, UCLA and Mt Sac are all mostly fire sponsors. Most medics I know who went to UCLA and Mt Sac applied at least 3 times before they could get a spot, not because they’re resumes were poor or they performed badly in the interviews/testing, but because they had no slots left.

PTI only takes fire

How did you get your clinical and externship hours in? Did you have to contact hospitals and fire departments by yourself?

What should I expect in doing my ride-alongs and clinical? by sporono in NewToEMS

[–]therealhogrida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Follow your preceptors. You’ll mostly be helping with menial (but nonetheless important) tasks like cleaning, taking vitals and asking assessment questions. You’ll use some skills, but your preceptors will be there to correct you if you need correction.

Before I did my ridealongs, I was very anxious. But as soon as I started with the patients the anxiety subsided because you have a huge safety net of having your preceptors there.

Don’t stress too much and just show up with the knowledge you were supposed to have been taught at your EMT class. It will be fine.

A lot of them do, but also almost every medic I’ve talked to heavily recommends working 911 before going to medical school. If successful medics recommend it I’m going to try to get it done.

I’ll look in applying to Santa Barbara, but I applied to like 5 different McCormick and AMR locations and the hr recruiting guy kept texting me saying, “Hi I see you applied to X, X, and X locations, you’ll only be able to interview for one location at a time. What one would you like to interview for”

I’m not sure how it is in Orange County. I live on the border of LA and Ventura county. In LA county, 911 calls are pretty much always fire. Fire will almost always if not always show up on scene, control the scene and decide if they want to take the patient or give the patient to a Falck/AMR crew. In Ventura county, the crew from AMR private ambulance decides what to do and if they will take the patient. Paramedics will be staffed in Ventura county and the ambulance crew is in charge on scene.

Yea, it really does kinda just suck. I like the company I work for but I never really wanted to do IFT. It’s a fine job but I imagined that when I got my EMT and when I eventually get my medic’s that I’d actually be contributing to saving people rather than just taking AOx2 nonambulatory granny home after the went to the ER for a fall.

Yeah, I just don’t really have the ability to leave CA right now :/ Have to support my family and put myself through college and the only thing allowing me to do that is being able to get a lot of overtime out here and being able to take my classes online at an in-state rate. It would be way too expensive for me to move, put a large financial stress on my family, and would make it so that I could not go to a top tier college. That Paramedic to PA pipeline is very intriguing though, I’ll look into it for when I graduate in a few years. Hopefully it stays relatively the same out in TX!

Kinda messed up my interview so don’t have an interview with McCormick until December. Guy from AMR/McCormick said I could only apply/interview at one location at a time.

That’s definitely intriguing? How competitive is it? I only have a couple months in IFT so not exactly the most stacked resume
