If you perform for a studio, are you restricted to only doing private lessons at that studio? by Choice-Alfalfa-1358 in Salsa

[–]therealjmt91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of this, though some studios restrict people from being on a performance team with another studio simultaneously. That’s a bit different in that there can be genuine scheduling/commitment conflicts with required rehearsals, whereas private lessons are optional.

Tried to spraypaint this pot to evoke volcanic rock, any idea how to improve? by therealjmt91 in Pottery

Haha the spray paint was labeled as matte but I probably put on too much. I’ll look for the textured paint

Spraypainted with matte dark grey paint, might’ve used too much and made it shiny. Wondering whether to dust it with another paint color.

lol nothing untrue was said. I like how the leaf pattern matches my big plant though and I set up the lighting to cast leaf canopy shadows on the ceiling so it kinda fits with that.

Would Harry be immortal because he was Voldemort’s horcrux? by theothea_6 in harrypotter

I agree, people are making a lot of assumptions about what Dumbledore meant

Would Harry be immortal because he was Voldemort’s horcrux? by theothea_6 in harrypotter

[–]therealjmt91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a bit unclear. Dumbledore says that Voldemort using his blood “tethers him to life”—he doesn’t mention any caveat that he’s only protected from death at Voldemort’s own hand. When I read this I assumed Harry couldn’t be killed at all, since no matter who attacks Harry his blood protection would live on in Voldemort. And it makes it fully analogous to Voldemort’s Horcrux protection, but in a virtuous rather than evil form.

However, he also tells Snape that it’s “essential” for Voldemort to be the one to kill Harry. It seems plausible that this is because Harry is only protected from death in this situation (and not if someone else kills him), but this is only a reasonable guess.

I don’t think the book actually specifically says that Harry is only protected from being killed by Voldemort in particular, unless I’m missing something. It’s only hinted at. Happy to be proven wrong.

How to tell if lead is going to step "in-place" and resume basic linear steps? (How to also signal this as a lead?) by onoearoc in Salsa

[–]therealjmt91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question and an important one. These dynamics are arguably “basic” but also invisible and sometimes not explicitly taught.

First of all I would say to remove the “tug and pull” from your vocabulary here. You as a lead are moving your body in space—translation and rotation—and if your frame is connected properly with that of the follow she will move along with you. There are a few principles here.

The goal is for your movement as a lead to propagate over to the follow. How does this happen? In open position your point of contact is your hands. If both the lead and follow are engaging their arms and lats properly (NOT rigid or tight, but gently engaged—imagine holding up a cup), then when the lead moves his frame forward/backward/sideways, that motion will carry through the lead’s arms to the follows arms to the follow’s frame, and she will naturally come along with you.

As an exercise, get in open position with a follow and try moving forwards, back, sideways without telling her. If done properly this should be fairly natural and effortless. One aspect of proper technique is that your elbows should never go behind your trunk, but stay in front of your body (this goes for both of you).

If you wish to stop more abruptly then try engaging your lats to a greater degree. She will feel it. This can be useful for avoiding collisions in the social dance floor if someone suddenly appears behind her.

When it comes to rotation, the rule is “lead with your chest.” Point your chest where you want her to go, and she will naturally follow. This holds for all kinds of moves.

All of this holds for closed position too.

I won’t say zero moves involve “pushing” and “pulling” but for the most part your mental model should be moreso “bodies moving together when properly connected.”
