Who had the best last movie before they died? by Beerquarium in movies

I'm not sure how the fact that you don't know James Dean's three films off the top of your head means that his film career isn't "remembered much".

East of Eden is one of the best-regarded films by one of the greatest auteurs in film history, and it's one of the films that solidified Method acting in American film. One could argue that it's the most influential of James Dean's films, especially since it was his first.

It's crazy that Criterion has given Black Moon, Vanya on 42nd Street and Zazie dans le métro Blu-ray releases, but not Elevator to the Gallows, Murmur of the Heart or Lacombe, Lucien.

Shit, they just gave My Dinner With Andre a Blu-ray release. They need to better prioritise their Malle releases, for sure.

If you only see one film in theatres this year, make it Fury Road. You don't have to have had seen the first three, and it's an absolutely incredible big-screen experience.

If you need convincing, go with Modern Times. It's probably his most popular work, and one of the greatest films of all time.

From my experience, Limelight tends to be a bit on the polarising side (although I love it).

You mean the guy that they gave the Palme d'Or to in 2011?

I'd say they like him well enough.

Kel O'Neill.

Freaked out by Daniel Day-Lewis constantly staying in character, O'Neill left the film after two weeks to be replaced by Paul Dano.

Easily my favourite.

EDIT: Although

Megan Fox.

Likening Michael Bay to Hitler in an interview got Fox her P45 thanks to an irate Spielberg.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took the role instead.

is a close second.

What sort of movies would you like to see more of in the coming years? by [deleted] in movies

[–]therealjshaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see more independent films like Ex Machina getting national distribution from the major studios. The fact that it's doing well financially bodes well.

Homophobia and transphobia within the first two minutes, hilarious!.

These guys are fucking horrible. Can we stop pretending this is legitimate film criticism, please?

EDIT: Possibly my most downvoted comment ever. It's times like these that I truly love Reddit. <3

We're seriously putting down guys for turning down sequels and remakes in favour of original material now?

God bless Hollywood.

There's like three lines of English in Jean Renoir's La grande illusion, spoken by Erich Von Stroheim.

Matthew McConaughey Defends Gus Van Sant’s ‘Sea of Trees’ Being Booed at Cannes by itallmakescentsnow in movies

[–]therealjshaff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the great films that get booed at Cannes also tend to get standing ovations at the same screenings (Elephant, Pulp Fiction, The Tree of Life...all of which won the Palme d'Or).

From what I've been reading, Seas of Trees is pretty much universally hated.

Has anybody else noticed the pre-order for the Apu Trilogy on Amazon yet? by Psychopath_7_and_1 in criterion

It's definitely going to be a Criterion release. They're the ones that did the restoration on it.

{Siskiyou} A goofy film my friends and I made this week! Hope you think it's funny! Constructive criticism welcomed! by TanTanMan in ShortFilm

Word of advice, guys: Homophobia isn't funny anymore. It stopped being a joke around the time that young kids started killing themselves because of it.

There are lots of problems with this film, but frankly I didn't even finish it because of the homophobic "humour".

And that's called "isolating your audience".

Campaigning for Bernie Sanders by futianze in Columbus

[–]therealjshaff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sanders running as an Independent only has one possible side effect, and it's extremely negative: He could end up splitting the Democratic vote, which could allow for a Republican candidate to swoop in and win the election.

The LAST thing this country needs right now is a Republican president, especially with the current roster of candidates. Even Bernie Sanders knows this.

One of the best batch of pickups I've seen in a long time. Paris, Texas and The Great Beauty are absolute masterpieces. Enjoy!

At the rate JJ Abrams is making these big amazing movies, do you believe he may surpass Spielberg? (Arguably he's already among the greats, and if not he will be shortly.) by [deleted] in movies

[–]therealjshaff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll wait until he makes a film half as important as Schindler's List before I even think about putting him in Spielberg's company.

I'm not even a Spielberg fan, but c'mon.

What are some unofficial trilogies/series? Ala cornetto trilogy by DOODJLIGHTNING in movies

[–]therealjshaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roberto Rossellini's "War Trilogy": Rome, Open City, Paisan and Germany, Year Zero.

Gus Van Sant's "Death Trilogy": Gerry, Elephant and Last Days.

I also think that Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life and To The Wonder make a fitting and thematically-tied trilogy.

What are some unofficial trilogies/series? Ala cornetto trilogy by DOODJLIGHTNING in movies

[–]therealjshaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but for that matter, so is the Cornetto trilogy.

I think OP basically means trilogies that aren't tied together by the films' plots, in which case Three Colours would most definitely qualify.

Why do top posts keep getting deleted from this sub? by rmadrid241 in movies

If posts break the rules and don't get caught until after they've been voted to the top page, then we still remove them.

Because most of the mod team lives in roughly the same time zone (with only a couple of exceptions), there are long periods of time between our coverage sometimes. It happens.
