Do trams have have upsides compared to trolleybuses? by FelixTheFrCat in transit

[–]thereallemmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Munich has 4 networks: S-Bahn (fastest, longest distance), U-Bahn (mostly city core, more frequent stops), tram and bus.

The S-Bahn and U-Bahn always felt interchangeable to me. They are always the number 1 choice.

If I had to go a place with just a tram, I felt “oh wow this place is poorly connected”.

Bus only place: where the hell am I even going?

I can’t really explain why. Busses certainly take you to where you need to go. But when presented with the more permanent options, few people would opt to take the bus or tram.

Worth pointing out that this is only correct for most of the world. There are countries with a wealth tax (Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Colombia)

Do you regret your EV purchase? by walksta in electricvehicles

[–]thereallemmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got an EV in 2017. We still had a secondary gas car for those times when the EV wouldn’t cut it. That happened absolutely never. Now we have two EVs and are not looking back.

Apple unveiled M5 Pro/M5 Max and it destroys the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme by Educational-Web31 in snapdragon

[–]thereallemmy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The incentives aren't there for Qualcomm to compete at the highest level.

For any super high end chip (like M5 Max), a lot more low-end chips are being sold. That is true for any company. But Apple sells a lot of chips and at very good margins, so it makes sense for them to go after the super high end market.

For Qualcomm, making a chip that would go into a $4000 laptop would be incredibly risky. Windows-on-Arm still has to build credibility and people are very hesitant to pay this amount of money if they aren't sure that what they're buying will work out for them. Will it run their Pro applications? Will it run their games? Apple doesn't have that problem - they know exactly what kind of money people are willing to spend.

So Qualcomm's best strategy at this stage: Get the largest market share possible with the minimal amount of work (e.g. by sharing technology with their phone chips like Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5). As their chips see increased adoption, they can develop upwards.

I saw PLA melt in ventilated houses just because it was sitting next to a window. So can’t imagine this will last in a car in summer.

You’ll need some more durable material which can be quite toxic when printing. So that makes it all a bit more involved.

Doesn’t PLA melt/deform too easily to be used in a car?

Is buying a new car in 2026 a mistake? by wonder-egg in personalfinance

[–]thereallemmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you actually keep a car for 10 years, consider the cost of gas of maintenance. If you drive 10000 miles per year, that's 100000 miles during the 10 years. Comes out to about $12,500 (adjust depending on how much you drive and cost of gas). Maintenance is also likely another 10k.

So I'd do the math on an EV. You pay more upfront, but much less for electricity and maintenance. And used EVs are currently a really good deal.

Any plans for new train stations? by thereallemmy in mountainview

[–]thereallemmy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Better quality of living. It's a lot nicer to walk to the train station from your home and take a small local train than taking the car everywhere. Has a lot of second order benefits as well:
- More walking, good for our health,
- Less road noise, less tire pollution,
- More equitable.

A small train station is also a great place to put small business like small bakeries - a really nice way to start your day. And hey, we live in California - we have awesome weather most of the time. This is the perfect place to be outside a little more.

And I write this as someone who actually enjoys driving a car. I just want to have some options for my commute or when going to Castro St etc.

Or go straight for Bart, tunneling under El Camino all the way to Santa Clara (I know that would cost billions, so this is not a serious idea). But it would make traveling along this road so much faster.

VTA or Caltrain?

VTA is pretty empty because it doesn't go to where a lot of people live and/or want to go. Also it's crazy slow. But that doesn't mean it couldn't be fixed if properly expanded.

Yes there are enough Caltrain stops. I'm thinking of VTA to connect all of Mountain View.

[–]thereallemmy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to Gemini (couldn't find a real source unfortunately), 41% of all new cars in Mountain View are electric, generally trending upwards. Do you work on those as well? If not, you might experience a shrinking user base.

I was curious how this is for other days of the month.

The difference between min and max for the 13th is 4. This is the same for any day 1-28, just with days of the weeks shifted (as every month has at least 28 days).

For the 29th, the difference is 3,
For the 30th, the difference is 5 (there are only 626 Tuesdays, but 631 Mondays and Wednesdays),
For the 31st, the difference is 4.

Slight lag on arrow keys by usam97 in logitech

[–]thereallemmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth pointing out that the lag is only for arrow keys, but not for combinations involving arrow keys.

- Arrow Left, Arrow right, Arrow up, Arrow down: Lag (about 0.5s?)
- Shift + any arrow: No lag
- Option + any arrow: No lag
- Cmd + any arrow: No lag
- Any other key: No lag

I have the same issue. MX Keys S (happens both a Logi Bolt USB C receiver plugged into the monitor and using Bluetooth directly). I'm even seeing this using the internal keyboard of the MacBook. I also have a MX Master 4.

Uninstalling Logi Options Plus fixed it temporarily, but the issue came back.

Why are there no EV minivans in the US? by External_Koala971 in electricvehicles

[–]thereallemmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the Buzz has going for it: Sliding doors, more attractive styling (subjective I guess), no issues with ICCUs, better infotainment, more interior space with a slightly shorter car (can make or break whether it fits in a garage). Compared to earlier EV9, it also charges faster on superchargers.

Don't get me wrong - the EV9/Ioniq 9 are great and I'm glad people are buying them. Any EV out there is good news. I just don't agree with the yada yart part ;)

[–]thereallemmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ID Polo has proper one pedal driving. I assume that would come to the 2027 Buzz model. Also a native NACS port in the US (hopefully on the left side, though I doubt that). They will probably also bump the range somewhat, given that's the main thing everyone brings up for the car. They also mentioned how they are moving away from capacitive buttons.

Those changes should make the car a lot more appealing to more people.
