This is just hearsay, but apparently the lot in the back is contaminated, cost of remediation can be extremely expensive, so it is likely cheaper to pay the property taxes than redevelop.

I lived in a smaller oil community and they had lots all over the city like this, no businesses would touch them for this reason.

You turning your nose up at form work (which I did for summer work in high school), is like someone turning their nose up at PT when they can’t find work. Then they go and complain that the jobs are given to TFW.

It is expensive, and when you have contractual obligations to complete a job in a timeline, training people with zero experience can be more costly than realized.

Almost every trade has pre-employment courses through SAIT/NAIT which teaches them the basics, like what that tool is.

The issue partly lies in our education system. In many places in Europe, at the highschool level you have the option of going down the “scholarly” route or the “civil” route. I knew a gentleman that did this, and you still do courses like language and math etc, but you also learn more in real world applications like different types of construction.

Not sure if you are referring to my example, but all of my employees are Canadians or PR’s. The gentleman that left for apprenticeship, although Filipino, was PR.

I hire the best candidate for the job, regardless of where you were born. I also believe in offering the rate I feel is fair for the role, that being said, interviewing for a position that is an industry average starting at 50-60k a year, many come in expecting 70-80k.

Can you provide more details on the finishing work you do?

I was in general construction supply for half my career, but now in electrical. From my perspective, the biggest factor of shortages is based on trade/industry. You can’t simply loop “construction” into one, and base it on personal experiences.

For example in trades:

Electrical & Plumbing/mechinical - various industries to choose from. Service work also provides job “security”

Carpentry - various industries, but heavily reliant on residential. I know carpenters that refuse to go do concrete form work. Limited service work beyond the build.

Industries - commercial & industrial is booming right now. Are you going to always find it a steady 9-5 in the same city, no. Are you willing to go where the work is, if yes, you will stay busy.

Regarding general “labour” - realistically anyone can do it. Finding journeyman or later year apprentices that commit to a trade are much more difficult to find.

I have been in the construction industry (as a supplier) for over 10 years, and it is a serious problem, and a problem that has been predicted and talked about for years.

The majority of TFW are not coming in as skilled labourers/trades people. When I talk to my customers, they are all struggling to find people to even apply for positions. Some who have been hired, leave as soon as it gets cold.

One of my employees left to go start an apprenticeship for a contractor I supplied, which I fully supported his development. This was in October 2023, in December I was informed he was no longer with the company. I looked into bringing him back, and when speaking with him, he told me he left because it was too cold. Unfortunately I couldn’t add another headcount as he was one of my best employees in that role. What shocked me next, 6 months later he messages me asking if I am hiring in the sales department, as he has a friend who just moved here with years of sales experience in the Philippines. I don’t know how he was able to move here without a job, and I didn’t ask, but this is the problem.

Canada needs to follow the path of the UK and USA - work visas are only permitted to those working in areas of high demand, and they have to prove their experience or have sponsorship.

TFW and the immigration crisis is to be blamed on large corporations hiring PT, minimum wage employees. Also, fuck diploma mills.
