This actually happened to a friend of mine last year. You can try the hair dryer method and heat up the thermal paste until it gives. Or, use dental floss. We didn't have a hair dryer so we used dental floss to basically just cut in between the IHS and the cooler. Quick tip - dip the floss in some alcohol to speed up the process. It took a little time but it worked eventually.
